This is what I know. O'Brien has had some issues. He is not totally happy with things. His agent is listening and NFL teams are interested. However, I have been told it is doubtful he will leave, but it is not going to stop NFL teams from talking to him. O'Brien and his agent are pushing for some things. I heard he is really pushing to get his assistant coaches pay increases. He thinks they have to do twice as much work because of the NCAA ruling (esp. the free transfer rules). There are some other things he would like changed or modified. I still think he is back next year, but the door is still open a crack and people at PSU are concerned.

I am not sure that I understand the correlation between BOB being unhappy about a a few things and his agent talking, and the assistant coaches salaries? Why would that be a reason to leave? How does LJ and Vandy's salary make his agent talk. That makes little to no sense to me.

Um, the reply specifically stated LJ and Vandy. They were there before BOB, before sanctions, etc. Do they deserve more money - yes, but I can't see this being a reason why any coach would leave. Roof and other coaches have been there all of 1 year and we are supposed to throw money at them...and if we don't, BOB is gone?
Not sure I would agree that Bielema left because of assistant coach's pay scale either.

You want the best, you pay for the best. Welcome to the business of college football.
And it is one of the reasons that Bret specifically listed. Of course money for him is another reason. But look how many of his guys went down to Fayette in the same roles, or either other schools. They all pay better.

I agree with you Mtay. Especially with coaches with proven track records like LJ and Vandy. I agree that LJ and Vandy deserve an increase. But I also think that for LJ, it isn't always about the money (which I believe he has stated and is more credible than Bielema's comments) But for the rest of the coaching staff, what if we go out next year and have a 4-8 record? I am just a bit more conservative I guess and would like to see how they perform over at least some of the term of the CONTRACT that they agreed to. To me, I feel like BOB should ask for the coaches to be rewarded, but shouldn't be using it as a reason to be frustrated and possibly looking at other coaching jobs. Especially after 1 year.

Are the rumors legit? Also would Penn State be on the offensive end and redo his deal?
EDIT: Let's contain the coaching vacancy discussion to this thread and the other premium thread, please. If you are going to post developments (or what you think are developments), please provide links to sources. Thanks. -- Jeff

You have good business sense, something that many on here are disregarding. I would be interested to know what he's not happy about after one season in which this fan base has anointed him the second coming and he has an 8 year contract at $2M per. I should be that unhappy.

And if he leaves what exactly is Penn State supposed to do? What coach would come here who would be anything close to O'Brien given the current sanctions? What other coach could hold on to a top 30 recruiting class? Penn State isn't in a position to be picky right now. They'd better do what they have to in order to keep BOB, because we won't be seeing anything close to 8-4 for another decade if we lose him. If his assistants start getting poached there's a good chance he's gone so we'd better make sure that doesn't happen, at least until the bowl ban ends.
