O'Brien wants to be seen and heard

The Coaches Caravan wasn't Bill O'Brien's brainchild but Penn State's new football coach quickly embraced it.

  • Wow. Love my head coach. Seriously will take a lot for me to turn my back on this guy at this point. Outstanding hire... I urge alums to note the work this man is putting in and support the team with funds when you can. Don't hold back donations. This guy and this team needs our help now more than ever. BOB was an excellent hire. Despite the circumstances, all of which were completely out of his control and he had nothing to do with. WE ARE!

  • Its a great idea, but doing it in January is not so great. He needs to be on the road recruiting, not meeting and greeting alums.

  • What a great idea! Really proud of our staff.

  • I can't tell you how bad I want this staff to succeed!!! I'd love to see us in the Rose Bowl and have O'Brien deny ESPN an interview.

are they mutually exclusive? Hopefully HS coaches are invited to these events. It's more important that BOB meet them at this point. Is he even allowed to visit kids now?

At this point it is important to meet them. Being on the road in January, even if coaches are invited, is not really what he should be focusing on. He should be on the road at recruits taking those 1 in home visits.

No he cant meet kids right now (or maybe he can, but only at the schools, not sure), but thats not what I was saying. I am saying dont do it in January (like they are planning), the most important month for recruiting.

  • He can't be on the road recruiting those 1 in home visits. Are you aware of the NCAA rules and regulations?

  • Met him Monday in Philly. Awesome dude. Feel real confident about him and told him that we can't wait to see how the program thrives under his helm.

  • Really looking forward to see/hear coach O'Brien talk in Harrisburg on Wednesday. This guy is doing and saying all the right things so far. I hope he's extremely successful on the field.

That's awesome that they are hoping to make this a habit and that a west coast and southern trip are in the works for the future.

So O'Brien cant do in-home visits in January? I think you may need to be aware of when they can do in-homes.

A meet and greet in Arizona would be well attended.

  • If this was truly the benevolent event they play it up to be, then they wouldn't be charging the kind of money they are to attend. Call me cynical, but to me it's just a new kind of cash grab for the school. Great idea, but charging what they are ended my interest in it.

They aren't making much money off these events. Do you think the space rental and catering is free?

He's doing more in the last few months than Joe did int he last few years.

He wants to shake some hands and repair the inroads destroyed by Joe over the last several years. Let him talk to Highschool coaches and other people. Let them know this is the new Penn State.

Yeah, what he is doing is great and I mentioned that in my first post. But my only issue is it is prob. not the best idea for him to be doing this during crunch time for the 2013 class in January, when HCs usually take their one visit in-home to try and get one last word in.

What if he can do both... Or what if he meant February... After signing day... Im sure he will do all he can to have a top class this year- his first class...

"Nitardy said plans are in the works to hold similar events next January in Florida, the Atlanta area and the West Coast"

If he can do both, great. But if it is anything like the caravan schedule he is on now, I highly doubt he could do both 100%. We saw what happened when we didnt have a HC in January last year that could do much recruiting.

Didnt think what I said would be a big deal. I just recommend they move it back a month, or why not just do it again this time next year?

I am sure he can pop in on a few recruits before his dinner...and if he is in Florida and Georgia next January, then no better place to be recruiting if you ask me...
