O line/ D line recruiting

  • PSU has made great strides under OB with regards to skilled positions. I can say moving fwd that I feel good on recruiting the skill positions. We seem to have some excellent options in the 2014 class.

What scares me moving fwd are the big guys on the O and D line. I could be wrong but I feel as though we are thin on the big boys. I'd feel a lot better if we had a few run stuffing D tackles in the hopper or some bubbas on the O line.

The numbers would not support this theory. We are thin at OT, that is about it. DTs you just don't know their names since we brought in a huge frosh class in 2013 that all RSed.

  • We will know a ton more after spring. If guys like Dowery, Johnson and Gaia step up I am not worried about the DL.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

Yeah, I agree . I think this is an important spring for Gaia. I like Cothren... looks like he has potential. I am most afraid of our LB depth...

Beginning in 2014 we are also very thin on the interior of the offensive line as well. In fact, depending on where a Alosi plays we may be thinner on the interior than we are at the tackle position.

ya, he needs some weight first. he's a few years out.

Ive heard good things about Dowery, should be interesting to see where he ends up on the DC at the 1 tech after spring ball.

LB depth worries me as well, we really can't afford an injury at all.

    Diff, Mangino, Stanko, Laurent, Mahon.

We'll be thin everywhere (though IOL isn't bad), its called using guys as a swing man. Every team does it at every level and we will too.

    2014:
    Dieffenbach (SR)
    Mangiro (JR)
    Stanko (SO)
    Laurent (SO)
    Mahon (SO/FR)
    Hartman (FR/SO)
    Alosi (JR)

All those guys easily profile down to IOL. We can also much easier move one of our few OTs there too. Now on the other hand, only Alosi and maybe Hartman of that group could profile out to OT. Mahon I guess could in a pinch, but that isn't where he needs to be. We aren't going to be running a three deep at every position on the OL in sanction years, and will just do it afterwards (carrying 15 on an 85 roster is what most strive for).

The whole "thinner than at OT" is just bunk.

I agree. No injuries and we should be ok. That was what I was alluding to Gaia in recruiting terms was reported to be 285-290 and showed up at 265-270 (not such a problem with Fitz) but it seems as if Dowrey and AJ have passed him on the DC. Of couse our biggest variable this year is going to be QB play but somehow I'm not as concerned as I would have been in the past.
    How are your travels 13?

  • Not worried about DT. Austin Johnson and Dowrey will be very serviceable if not good. People forget Parker Cothren is coming in too. Kid is going to blow up in college. Gilliam does help the OT depth a little bit, but would agree that we are too thin there.

ya, putting on weight is the least of my concerns for our program with Fitz.

And travels have been great, once in a lifetime exp. Thanks for asking!

  • Like everyone else has said PSU will be ok as long as they can keep kids healthy. What would really be helpful is if BOB and the staff can recruit some stud OL like Donovan Smith who can come in and lock down a position for several years.

I wouldn't be too concerned about LB. I think most of these guys can play multiple spots.

  • I think during the sanctions/scholarship reduction years there will be multiple thin positions--just the nature of the beast. But I agree with all of the posters who've said that we'll know more after the spring and likely will feel better about positions like DT and OL.

  • As long as BOB and his staff don't have some of the epic misses that the former staff had, like Shrive, they should be alright.

  • The former staff didn't miss on Shrive. If thats the case, every staff in the country would have missed on him too, cause he had offers from everyone...Shrive missed on Shrive.

    Well said.

If Shrive had gone to some of those other programs, his career in upper level CFB would have likely ended after 2-3 years. And if not for our unique scholarship constraints this year, I doubt he would have been invited back for a 5th year at PSU.
