Noticeable Differences

Entering the spring, projecting what Penn State's offensive line would look like was nothing but a crapshoot.

  • Yea, The O Line looks bigger!

  • Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Not that I feel like we have a line full of NFL'ers, but this is definitely the best I've felt about our overall OL going into a season, in a long long time.

  • Fitz has made an immediate impact. Still a long ways to go! Hopefully our new coaches can coach them up!

  • It still absolutely blows my mind to think that squatting was not an integral part of the S&C program in the past. Unreal.

    LambeauLeap

  • This new S&C program is good for at least 1 more win a year. It's almost hard to believe the success we've had since 2005 with the old regime running the show.

    pennstate2012

  • This is exactly how I pictured things turning out with a new staff and Fitz bringing in a top S&C program. I and many others felt this way for years, that once we get a new staff, this program is going to be reinvigorated.

Not just on the OL, but across the board. When OB was hired and it was thought we were keeping JT, that really deflated the tires. Thankfully Mac showed OB that these guys are not strong at all, and OB as per his previous staff hirings, hired one of the top or and up-and-coming S&C coach to take over that aspect of the program. That was such a breath of fresh air.

Same could be said for our recruiting. New staff and PSU should be a consistent top 10-15 in the recruiting rankings every year. Not once every 5 years.

Everything has gone so well and like a lot of us thought it would. Lets just hope it all comes together in the fall and for years to come.

No offense to Fitz because long term he'll have the biggest impact on this team of anyone hired not named Bill, but for this year the Mac hire was the biggest. It consolidated the OL and I cannot stress enough how bad the 2 OL coach thing is. It drove me nuts that we did it that way for so long.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but any OL coach that Bill hired would have the entire OL under them, its not just because its Mac.

Its not just because its Mac, was what I was saying. Its a combination of 1 guy, and such a quality guy. But first and foremost, 1 damn guy.

  • What was the past S&C program like? Squats, dead lifts, and cleans are all things that players start doing in high school. Thank God for Fitz.

    rrossiceman12

  • I've been relaying for years how inferior our old S&C program was. That was probably the most common topic players complained about when amongst ourselves. It's been a long time coming. Feels great to be vindicated.

DeOn'Tae Pannell must be an NFL All-Pro by now, then.

One of Shrive's comments about "important to have us all in the same room". I know we heard from the defensive backs, that in the past the safeties and corners met seperately,(which seemed insane)...and I know we had two coaches, but I was at least under the impression that during break-outs, the entire OL met together. I cannot imagine that the OG/C and T/TE did not work together during positional meetings, and study film as a unit, etc. I just can't accept that... To think how many times we heard Joe say during camp over the past 10 years that the OL was not "gelling" or coming together... wonder why, just wow.

I went through this my last year in college myself. They thought since it was a young OL (I was the only returner who had started a game) they would put two coaches there and split us up for more individual attention. Well it was awful and it stunted those kids growth. Its an awful awful awful idea, especially for the area on the field that needs to function as a unit more than anywhere else.

I guess the road to hell is paved with good intentions...At least they had a logical reason for it, even if it still ended up as a crappy idea...I'd like to know the reasoning behind why that was the norm here for so long.
