Notes: Hoops Elite Skills Camp

Penn State’s first Elite Camp under second year head coach Patrick Chambers turned out to be a huge success over the weekend, headlined by a few future Nittany Lions.

  • Andrew - this skills camp.

Is this the first for Chambers?
Did Ed run these same type of camps?
Were you impressed by amount and quantity of talent?
I assume no other schools can come by and watch?

I actually used to work camps for Ed, and when I was there it was two individual overnight camps (about four days each, mostly youth), a day camp (all local youth) and a high school team camp. I don't recall any sort of elite camp while I was doing them.

There have been camps throughout the summer, but this was the Advanced Skills Camps. Here is how the University defined it on the website:

"Although open to players entering grades 9 through 12, this two-day physically demanding and competitive practice camp is specifically designed for more advanced skill players who are serious about raising their skills in preparation for playing at the collegiate level."

For the first Elite camp under Chambers, I was impressed with how well it was run. There was a schedule of event that was easy to follow, and the coaches stuck to the plan. The coaching staff was present the entire time, very involved in teaching the campers, and the entire team was also there, split up keeping score for all the games. I've heard lots of positive responses from attendees already. Also having the three verbals there was a big plus, and the overall talent level was quite good. Michigan has an established camp that hosts a bunch of players, so I imagine that is where the PSU staff is looking to take this camp.

DeChellis had an elite camp too.

Thanks Andrew. This just reinforces my sense of Coach Chambers' level of knowledge of what he wants to establish as part of the overall program.

  • I have also heard that the staff is really impressed with Jack and he is a much better athlete than people think. My guess is that he will play this year.

No, he'd have definitely made the write-up if he was there. I think he ends up at Northwestern.
