  • I know we should probably expect it now, given it's early in the spring, but it's a little sad that our 2nd or 3rd team DL is beasting our OL.

Also, if the reports are basically that McGloin and Bolden are pretty much even ... ugh! I'm almost willing to bet that's the story we hear all spring and summer.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • I'm surprised nobody on here has commented on Bolden's lack of displaying superior skills to McGloin up to this point

This brings up something I have been thinking about for a while. As we all know, there has been a lot of discussion on all three boards regarding the Bolden/McGloin competition. What I don't understand is: if Bolden won the job through summer camp and kept it through the first half of the year, how could the staff have been so "wrong" about his abilities? Shouldn't live drills/scrimmages against our first team defense prepared him for the speed of other teams' defenses? Shouldn't the staff have been better able to predict how each of them would do in game situations?

FWIW, I'm in the Bolden camp and think that improvements in offensive line play and play calling had more to do with McGloin's comparative success.

During the summer we heard a lot about Bolden having a steep learning curve and soaking everything up like a sponge, so my guess is that the staff expected it to continue (and I did too) so by the end of the season he would be well ahead of McGloin. But instead it didn't happen -- seemed he plateaued and looked lousy unless he was going against a lousy defense like the Gophers.

So I think he won the job more on expected potential rather than having a clear advantage over McGloin.

The problem with that is McPick only looked good against bad defenses as well.

  • Worst thing that happened last year was McGloins solid first half against tO$U. Gave hope for him and blinded coaches for the rest of the year. I completely agree they had a much better gameplan when McGloin was in as well.

I'm extremely disappointed not to see Jones' name been thrown around all over the place. I think he is integral to busting this QB problem open. Comparing Bolden to McGloin has proven frustrating and fruitless for the better part of 6 months +. Jones turning up the heat on one or both of them was my #1 wish for spring ball news.

  • My guess is we see a reverse next year. McGloin for first half of the year, he stinks.....then Jones comes in for the rest.

I'm so tired of hearing about McGloin's "leadership." Yeah, he's been a real leader with his post-season quotes on camera and on twitter. People are blind, IMO, if they truly think he's a leader. He's an opportunistic guy who takes advantage of things when they are perfectly in his corner. As soon as there's trouble, he's not a leader, he hides and walks away from coaches. Sorry, but it's easy to be a "leader" in practice when it's not a game and everyone knows each other and you aren't being asked to do too much that will expose your weaknesses.

My guess is McGloin is still being asked to do a bunch of play action rollouts, while the others are probably sitting in the pocket.

You must have missed the first half of the Ohio State game -- sure he wasn't good the 2nd half, but that is still one more good half against a good defense than Bolden had.

Again, unfair to compare the two quarterbacks because they both played behind completely different offensive lines with completely different help from the running backs. Bolden had no help from either most of his games, McGloin had the opposite. So contribute that to what you want, but let's not put McGloin up on a pedestal because he had 2 good drives against OSU and then stunk pretty much the rest of the year from that point on.
