Next year improvments?

  • What would you like to see improve the most for next year?

I would like to see a more effective Kick return and punt return.

Can't disagree there, especially in the kick return department. Though Della Valle was serviceable as a punt returner but Lewis made some questionable decisions.

  • Better KR and PR coverage would be nice too.

I've said a few times now that I'm excited to see how BOB's offense evolves with a QB who is mobile. I think he could adapt pretty well, as I seem to remember Bench running zone reads. Wouldn't mind seeing some designed QB runs on play-action bootlegs, maybe move the pocket more as well.

  • Totally agree on the mobile QB. Not looking for zone read but just having a QB that can scramble or pressure the edge on bootlegs would be another dimension.

One improvement, which we saw against Wisky is stronger 3rd quarter play. PSU led (3) or was tied (OSU) at half in all 4 losses. Would like to see PSU come out as they did against Wisky during OOC next year.

  • With the numbers, I can't see BOB using a lot of designed runs.

  • Hard to think of where we could improve offensively. Obviously we have a number of backs who can do the job, but ball security was shaky at times. I think another WR will step up and take some of the pressure of of A-Rob. It will be interesting to see the QB situation unfold. Bench is faster than you would suspect and is definitely a threat to run. It would be interesting to see how well he passes.
Defensively will be the much more interesting part. Obviously Mike Hull and Glenn Carson will most likely be starters, leaving one OLB position open for battle. I think Wartman takes it and that could be fun to watch because he can lay a hit. In the secondary it will be interesting to see who replaces stephon morris. It will probably be between Da'Quan Davis, Jordan Lucas, and possibly Jordan Smith. Also who will replace Hill, and join the DE rotation.
Special Teams will need a huge improvement as well.

  • While not flashy, I liked what Williams did in the KR. He gets up field.

Kickoff coverage needs to be addressed big time. We would have been better off kicking it out of bounds on Sat. Hopefully we can find a kickoff specialist who can boot it out of the endzone.

Defensively, we really need a nickle package. I understand that we were short-handed this year and didn't have to option to run that defense, but it is tough going against pass-first spread teams in base. It would also be nice to find an option at corner that would allow Amos to play safety.

  • Special teams in general, but specifically punt and kickoff returns.

Improved safety play and ball skills.

I thought Ficken did a pretty darn good job kicking off after the first couple of games unless he was kicking into the wind.

  • Though the return teams were far from exciting, they were average at best....Though not a positive unit on the team, I would say it is a negative either, its pretty much a wash.

However, its the coverage teams that need the biggest improvement. Unfortunately, in reality, the decreasing scholarship numbers due to the sanctions, the coverage teams will be most effected when you have to rely on a number of "run-ons" to contribute to those teams. I know a lot of walk-ons have contributed greatly to the teams over the years, of course Kilmer comes to mind, and James Van Fleet performed very well on coverage teams in 09 and 10', but the fact is it is an area that will be greatly impacted by the lack of scholarship depth.
Even this past Saturday, I believe both of Wisconsin's first two drives started around midfield due to the kick coverage team... Also, Purdue's first possession started in PSU territory after the opening kick was returned to the mid field area... As some one else stated, we'd be darn near better kicking out of bounds than some of the starts we gave up this season.

This brings to mind... I know under NCAA rules that Fitz can not be a "position" coach, or unit coach... but no doubt, he certainly has a large role on the coverage teams during the games. Not sure how many other head S&C coaches have that kind of specific role on game day? I am pretty sure JT was never out on the field a few yards, giving instructions before a kick off... Not sure what I am looking for here, or if anyone has anything to add to it? I just find it very interesting to see his on field involvement with the team before a kick or a punt. At the same time, I have to think its a huge positive to have a S&C coach who can also assist on game day with the on field coaching, etc...

  • Somebody mentioned it, but defensive ball skills would be nice. A lot of turnovers were left on the field this year.

Yep, we need two corners to step up badly. Maybe three so we can move Amos to safety.

  • Offensive line play, Ohio State's pass rush ate us alive. Hoping this improves with a second offseason of competent S&C.

I've got a feeling that Texas intended to quote pennstate2012's post about defensive ball skills.

I thought I read DaQuan Davis, headslap.

But yeah, I'd like to see some corners step up and give the front seven a little help.

  • I think the most important thing for next year is our health. Our depth will be limited, especially on defense. If we can't stay healthy, it could be ugly. Right after that will be leadership. No more Mauti, McGloin, Hill, etc. Younger guys need to step up. Guys like Carson, Willis, Urschel, etc. will need to take extra leadership.

I'd like to see one dominating factor on the DL. I highly doubt it'll be DQ Jones. He just doesn't have the upside this late in his career to become a true impact performer. Who does? Deion Barnes. I really hope another year of schooling under LJ & another year of lifting with Fitz, and he'll be close to a finish product next year. I expect a pretty big year for him. As a whole, I really like our DL next year.

  • I'm extremely excited to see how Barnes can develop.

I expect other programs to recruit him hard this offseason though, so hopefully none catch his eye.

Thankfully, no other programs have Larry Johnson.

Barnes has about as little reason to leave as anyone. I fully expect him to stay. He's got the two things he needs: the best DL coach in America and the best S&C coach in America.

I actually expect the entire Six to stay. Except for Belton they are all in a great position here, and he still has a great shot here, though he needs to work on his game.

    Very true.

I wasn't trying to be Debbie Downer, just pointing out that he has one of the brightest futures on the squad.

JMO but I think Belton leaves. He won't want to stay behind Zwinak, and nobody likes riding the pine. I could see him transferring due to PT, but I hope he doesn't.

For me he was the biggest disappointment on offense this season. Wasn't impressed at all.

  • I agree about the Special Teams and really think this is where BOB will have his toughest test in trying to fill this squad.

I think that a lot of our guys were on special teams this year was awesome but I kind of want to blame that on guys always seeming to be down. It is a rough sport and people need breaks.

If it worked and wasn't unhealthy then every school would do it all the time.
