Wow, nice rating for Nelson. I'm surprised he was rated that high. He kinda reminds me of O'Connor from last year's class.

  • Can someone tell me how reputable ESPN's player rankings are?

    Also, comparatively to other services?

    Thanks.

They are a distant 4th behind the three major recruiting services. Most people don't pay much attention to them.

I actually like Nelson a lot, I don't know much about technique (others on this board can speak to that), but I think he's pretty high end on the athletecism scale.

I agree with this generally, but people pay attention when they run their National Signing Day TV coverage.... at least HS kids so, I'm sure. That's why having Hack and AB so high will continue to get us great national pub as HS kids follow ESPN's coverage. HS kids don't know any better yet about ESPN.

So yea, no one thinks much of their scouting ability, but so many people will see it that it can do nothing but help our national profile.

Don't disagree here, though it doesn't seem like most recruits pay much attention to ESPN from a ranking perspective.

Any service that ranks Hack as the #1 QB in the country is ok in my book.

  • Mahon is a dang good OL, and 247 has him rated too low. I don't buy the excuse about OG's being rated lower than OT's. There's plenty of OG's rated highly on this site.

Maybe they still need to see him in person or something, but he deserves to be a top rated kid.

  • I feel a lot of kids see these rankings on Espn so I feel having commits on there is very positive for recruiting. Not that anyone probably cares at this point, but wasnt Ryan Switzer ranked a few months ago while we were strongly pursuing him and now I don't even see him on the list? Is that what you get for comitting to N. Carolina??? Obviously i'm joking, I wish the kid the best.

This is the thing - ESPN's rankings may be a distant 4th, but they get the most publicity, by far. Having 11 commits in the initial ESPN 150 and getting Shane Morris on national TV is definitely the type of impression and publicity you want out of it. One of the things Poggi just said about his commitment was that you (as a player) want to play with the best, and if a recruiting class is hyped on national TV, then you want to play with those guys.

As for PSU, this goes a long way in recruiting offensive weapons, especially WRs. When the most well-known sports network says your QB is the best high school QB in America, and ditto for your TE, that's going to make offensive playmakers sit up and take notice. I'm sure the possibility of being the Wes Welker of this offense is not lost on a number of the 2013/2014 receivers.

The only place ESPN's rankings get publicity is on ESPN -- other than that, they are ignored by the rest of the world. You may not realize it, but there are sports writers in newspapers and magazines who write about recruiting classes and they refer to rankings by the other services.

So, although ESPN is a big entity in the world of sports reporting, the rest of the world combined is bigger than they are, and so their rankings cannot get more publicity "by far" when they are ignored by everyone else.

Yeah, but ask a random 17 year old kid where to get sports information from. He will tell you ESPN. Then you go to ESPN and see their recruiting page. Then you think, "wow, they're showing my name on ESPN and look at all these kids going to X school, it would be cool to go with them." Sure, the kids being recruited know of the other sites, but it's nice when they can see themselves on ESPN, the end all be all for sports information to most teenagers. Then they can show it off to their other friends who aren't being recruited and don't know of the other sites and say "hey, look at me on ESPN."

I think you're underestimating their draw to high school recruits.

Exactly. Do 247, Scout, or Rivals have a nationwide television network on which to broadcast these rankings? No, ESPN is it. All of us recruiting nerds (and many of the players) may know these services, but ESPN has cornered the market for teenagers and sports news. If you go to any athletically-involved teenager in the country and were to tell them "Hey, wanna be on ESPN?" they'd all jump at the chance. Hell, my high school football team was featured on ESPN as the worst in the state, and we still touted the fact that we ended up on ESPN.

I know this is absolutely not realistic, but if we ended up with all of those guys, we would definitely have the top class in the country. The crazy thing is, I feel like we have a legit shot with all of those guys minus Foster, really havent heard much coming from him that gives me hope.
