New Kickers/Class of 2013 Kickers

  • So let's figure out who our kicker should be. Andrew Wolverton the Penn State goalie in soccer was All-Big Ten as a freshman, and can kick a soccer ball about 60-70 yards. I've seen him do it in real life because he went to my high school. We knew each other fairly well, should I reach out to him?

Anybody know if we were planning on taking a kicker for the class of 2013. If so potential prospects?

  • JMO, but Ficken will be fine, especially after this year. Kickers always seem to struggle their first year, then that experience helps them show well in following years. Coaches seemed to be happy with him in practice, I think it will show up in games later this season.

Chris Gulla out of NJ is a possibility.

I hope BOB gives him a call this evening.

  • One of the first things Kiffen did was to get a scholarship kicker with the limitations, that way he was locked up for 4 years, and they didn't have to worry about a kicker.

I think that's a hell of an idea.

When Sean wrote about Gulla this week, lots of people thought it would be crazy to offer him a scholarship because he hadn't received any offers yet. Those same people are now complaining about Ficken.
Gulla's the guy. He can can kick and punt and does both really well. He was at the Ohio game, is good friends with Garret Sickles, and has auditioned for the coaching staff already.
    Offer him immediately!

I was on board with offering him. His tape looks great. I don't have a problem using one of our scholarships on a guy that can take care of kicking and punting for 4 years.

If you watch his kicks he missed right..they didn't hook, like when a golfer slices or fades a drive. He blocked them, like a golfer blocks a drive (leaving the clubface open without turning the club over). He left his foot open with no roll...watch it some of his kicks...that's my observation. I'd still be looking for another kicker though.

  • Kickers are head cases. They get on tilt and you have no idea what to expect. Worse yet, it can demoralize the whole team and force the coaches to take chances when they normally would kick. I think the only way we get through this season is getting out in front by 17 pts and praying.

  • Matthew McCrane also has lots of family from Pennsylvania and has made two visits to Princeton (Junior Day and kicking camp) and one to Penn earlier this year.

  • McCrane was recently honored to be selected to TEAM USA for the International Bowl the day before signing day and would be GOOD press to have Penn State helmet raised high at the signing day breakfast that is highly covered by press. McCrane is #1 ranked kicker in Texas and #13 in the Nation. Wouldn't it be ironic if UT got Fera and the kicker they are recruiting for 2013 gets offered by Penn State?

I assume this means Matt McCrane has interested in PSU.

  • yes, he is! He has two official visits not scheduled so far and hopes to hear from them re: visit for Penn State vs. Temple game? Tomorrow, he's at SMU visit for SMU and Texas A&M. He has never been to a Penn State game before.

We already have a scholarship kicker (Ficken) on the roster through 2014.

Thanks for the info. He must be a good student too if he's looking at Princeton.

  • Wasn't there a kid that is walking on this year that went to State High and was a first team AAAA kicker? I dunno his name, but I think he's still walking on... Ficken is our guy for the foreseeable future, but its only 2 more years... Hopefully this freshman from SC High runs on. When are try outs again? Anyone know when they are, and if the kid I'm talking about is going to run on?
