  • Makes the most sense.

Great opportunity to change the names of the divisions, though.

  • This was inevitable and makes a ton of sense. Unfortunate that we'll rarely play MSU/UM/Iowa in this scenario but I assume we'll keep our game with Nebraska yearly.

    Ding ding ding.

I posted on tBB that this is Delany's way of changing the division names without losing too much face.

  • No kidding, I follow as much PSU football as anyone, and couldn't tell you off the top of my head if we were in the leaders or the legends? No clue...
Tell me we are in the B1G East, and I think I'll be able to recall that one..

  • I was wondering what they were going to do. Geographically I thought it made more sense to move Wisky but from a competitive balance stand point it has to be Illinois.

  • Curious to see how they set up the rivalry games - northwestern - maryland and illinois - rutgers?

Please don't say we are in the Big East again!!!! I hate that name!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think its pretty clear that no other team in the B1G has more to gain from these additions than PSU. I'm excited about easy roadtrips every other year to these schools and we know we'll have a huge presence there on gameday. Do OSU or Wisky fans even feel remotely close to the same way? Absolutely not. Outside of the perceived easy wins they will provide it takes away a game from a more traditional rival for the rest of the B1G.

FWIW, I have heard long ago that Illinois and NW wanted to be in the same division. I'm guessing that the new x-over "rivals" will be NW-Rutgers, Ill-MD.

You are correct, the happiest current Big Ten fanbase should be us. Since we made the move to 14, I would like us to go to 16 with hopefully two more eastern teams. UVA and UNC would be nice.

Like it!! I think it is a VERY competitve and fair balance between the 2 divisions. We annually play the teams surrounding PA in Md, OSU, and RU. Great chance for regional rivalry. 2 away venues that van be day trips now for us.

    carlisle14

  • Not sure they won't realign the "rivals" game to give us either Maryland or Rutgers? Who knows. Anything the Big Ten does these days make little sense!!! Hope Maryland and Rutgers bring their own officiating crews, that would be an upgrade no doubt!!!

    stormpsu1

  • i wish we could get aay from the x-over rival thing. Means the team son the other side will only come aroun don teh schedule 2 times per decade. Would like to match up against Michigan and NW more often than that for sure..... if we have to be x-overed with a team I am sorta glad it a nice quality opponent like Neb, at least. The MSU thing was never a rivalry....

But we all know the whole focus of teh B10 is to have the end of year OSU-scUM game, and they want it to happen 2 weeks in a row, So, x-over it is!!

The rivals game ha sto be from the opposite division. It appears PSU, RU, and UMd all in same division. So, they will be matched with Illinois and ???

Expect B1G to adopt a 9-game league schedule with the addition of UMD and RU.

Means we still play 3 teams from the other div. every year, but with 7 instead of 6 it will be fewer opportunities to go up against MSU/UM/Iowa.

B1G/PAC12 OOC deal fell thru and is not likely to resuscitate. Therefore, B1G has good reason to revisite the 9-game Conf. Schedule, IMO.

Agree. They will likely go to 9 games unless they go to 16 teams. Then we get the "pods".

I agree, I also think that they will move to a 9 game schedule. Also, with PSU playing Rutgers and Maryland every year, hopefully this will open up the schedule for playing Pitt more since alums in NJ and MD will get to see PSU on a regular basis.

Really? 9 game league schedule?? I would guess folks at OSU, scUM, PSU, and Wiscky would oppose that mightily as we can currently get 3 or 4 OOC games all at home and rake in the extra $$ that comes with the Coastal Carolina's and Temple's of the world that will come to your stadium for a 1 time deal of $250K, or give you 6 home games for 2 at Lincoln Field ....

Penn State and the other big schools lose a ton of money if it goes to 6 or 7 home games per year vs 7 or 8 home games per year. That one assured hom egame makes a big dent in teh pocketbook.

That is why the SEC decided to stay with 8. However, the BTN changes things a bit because it would add more attractive inventory. I'm not sure if it is enough to offset the money made on a gameday. Basically, teams would be going from 7 home games to 6.5 (by having 4 and 5 in conference home games, trading off every year).

With a 9-game schedule every other year yout get 5 B1G home games. Add 2 or 3 OOC home games and you've got 7-8 home games every other year.

At the very least in order to maintain 7 home games with only 4 B1G home games you'll need to adjust your OOC games so that you have 3 @ home during the odd years.

I predict a 9-game conf. schedule will be adopted whenever the first 14-game conf. season begins.

  • I am a PSU junkie. I want as many home games as possible. Even if it is home vs Temple rather than away vs a cross division team like Illinois (supposed to switch divisions). Plus, I see a big benefit in having "tune up" games against teams like Buffalo and Akron and Temple, especially when in CFB every year you are breaking in young players at key positions....

ILL, IND, MD, OSU, PSU, PUR & RUT in the South
IOWA, UM, MSU, MIN, NEB,NWU & WIS in the North
