NJ Sandy Update

    Hi Michael,

Whilst the "extent" of the Antarctic Ice is increasing, the "mass" of the Antartcic ice cover is decreasing among the ever increasing calving of sea ice glaciers.

And this too is a predicted result of "global warming" no matter how many deniers say otherwise.

    cheers

    Kirk

Could be the case. If you read my post closely you would see that my point is that the climate has been and is always changing on Earth and far greater climate changes occurred on Earth before humans were present. So how do you explain those if it is the burning of fossil fuels that causes climate change?

For years the cries were that burning fossil fuels caused "global warming" but once saavy political folks got involved they transitioned to hijacking the phrase "climate change." It's smart. Take the phrase that no one is arguing against and try to get it associated with your cause. Then you're never wrong. Increased temp. Climate change. Decreased temp. Still a winner...that's climate change also. More snow. Climate change. Less snow. You guessed it - climate change. Yep, I agree those are all examples of climate change. See we can all agree the climate is changing. As it always has. But these recent changes all pale in comparison to the climate changes Earth has undergone before the appearance of humans so no, I'm not convinced humans burning fossil fuels is the dominant factor in climate change.

  • You global warming types are funny. You use global warming as the answer for everything mother nature sends our way. In a few months we'll get clobbered by a snowstorm with record low temps and it will be blamed on, you guessed it, global warming. It must be the easiest intellectual argument to make when you have the same answer for everything.

It's even easier to refute when you don't know what the hell you're talking about. You know how many of the world's top 200 geologists are "global warming types"? 196. I'm sure they're all just liberal quacks though, right? This is amurica dammit!

It's ok to recognize we are accountable for our actions. It's really ok.

  • Do you think humans influenced the dust bowl. If not, think again.

They say the earth is getting warmer, not that it is caused by humans. Fact is, there is no way to scientifically prove if it caused by humans or not, but that doesn't stop liberal politicians from trying to impose new taxes/penalties/regulations on us evil humans who have the audacity to do such things as breathe and drive to work.

  • Update. Still no power on Day 4. Estimates say "by the 5th". Lines for gas are miles long, as people need to drive to work with the lack of mass transit, as well as power their generators. Now no water for my neighborhood either. May travel to upstate NY this weekend and stay with cousins there for some time. Travel restrictions now have forced carpool time for most river crossings.

  • Same for me with the power situation. Had to wake up at 5:30 AM to catch a bus, luckily they're running on a somewhat nomal schedule. Waited 2 hours in line for gas yesterday.

  • I was at Long Beach Island for a long weekend in early August ... seeing some of the pictures people have posted from that area are sickening.

I hope every is safe and look forward to things getting back to 'normal' for many of you.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

They couldn't land a rescue helicopter anywhere on LBI because it was all under water. They had to land in Brick NJ and take a boat over. I'm not sure when or if they'll get back to normal.

The point really is not who or what is responsible but what are we going to do about it. The rising and warming seas levels just can no longer be ignored. If we want to live on the coasts and in cities like NYC we are going to have to recognize that and react to it accordingly. Arguing over the cause will get us nowhere. We need to approach the implementation of our infrastructure in a forward thinking progressive way if we don't want these types if storms (which will become more common) to continue to debilitate us.

If people continue to politicize this argument we all lose.

Did they really drop in Brick to get to LBI? That seems a bit odd to me.

    Ugh, that's terrible.

The family I was with has had that house for 20 years or so. I was thinking with the house being raise up a bit that they would have a shot, but I'm guessing not so much.

Anyone know when they expect the water to receed?

Fact is? Choosing not to read the science behind human induced global warming does not mean it is not occurring. There are lots of us Republicans that chose not to bury our heads in the sand and it doesn't take new taxes/penalties/regulation to address the issue.

  • From what I've seen, the destruction in NYC & NJ is just as bad as Katrina in NO. Recovery for some of the areas hit will take years and years. Its really a humbling feeling when looking back at the beastly wrath of this superstorm. My thoughts are with all of those trying to restore normallity in the aftermath.
