NJ Sandy Update

  • Insane. No power in most areas for over 24 hours. Most gas stations can't pump bc of no electricity. Couldn't get to my apt in Hoboken because of the water. Cars parked near the water are now in the Hudson. Went down the shore earlier today, ill try and post some pics. Seaside got crushed, LBI is still under water. Subways in NYC won't be running for another week.

  • I live in Hoboken as well but fortunately I made the decision to stay in PA with my parents after the game this weekend rather than risk the train ride back. Now I don't know when I'll be able to get there and by extension get into NYC for work. Just crazy.

  • Holy cow! My thoughts are with all those who got clobbered by Sandy. Where was that sand-covered hydrant pic taken? It just show how powerful mother nature can be.

Best wishes Andrew. Hoping for a speedy recovery for those who experienced the brunt of Frankenstorm.

  • Glad you are safe, Andrew.

I've seen some pretty devastating pictures of the Jersey coast. It's crazy how powerful mother nature is and to think that this was only a CAT 1 Hurricane too.

It morphed into a superstorm with 3 different air masses converging on the Jersey Shore. This is an unprecedented event. Meteoroligists have difficulty with prediction models when only 2 air masses are involved let alone 3!

"Only a CAT 1 Hurricane" doesn't begin to describe how large and devastating this storm really is/was.

But even still, what if it was a CAT 3+ and then the other two air masses that converged on it...damage would be that much worse. Storm surge and flooding would probably be 10x what it is/was.

  • Lived in NOLA for Katrina and many others. Don't count on power for at least 4-5 days if not much longer. They need time to clear out the streets first and then for the power companies to get there from around the country. My road was one of the first ones in NOLA with power with a simple sign by a neighbor up the street. "Will show tits for power" and a crew for Georgia said they had to stop and light us up. Cheesteaks, subs, or beer may work up there. Just something to think about.

Cat 1 is meaningless, it's just the wind strength of the storm. The storm surge and water do so much more damage than the wind for the most part. A cat 3 at low tide may not do what this storm did. This storm just lined it up with a full moon and moving on shore with the high tide. I'll take a much more compact fast moving 3 over a large slow moving cat 1 anyday. This storm just happen to line up with extra high tides which made this storm surge ultra high.

Whoa! Hope your apartment is undamaged!

Storms like this show how much of a beast mother nature is and how we are at its mercy. It might not be the popular prevailing opinion but I believe we humans have minimal effect on nature at a grand scale (e.g. climate change). Some would like to think we have great power as humas but nature has been unleashing fury for millions of years, whether there has been humans burning gasoline, etc. or not. /tangent

    Abso"effen"lutely correct!

I live in Bellefonte. Storm center hovered near us all day today. But we only experienced some downed wires and trees here and there with sparse power outages. I had no damage and didn't lose power in spite of 35-40 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 60 mph during the worst of it on Monday. We got maybe 3" of rain (no like we didn't need it) and only minor localized flooding.

All in all, it was a dud here given the pre-storm hype. The brunt of the storm was felt all along the east coast from NC to ME and especially NJ & NYC.

Had this been a CAT 3 storm mixed with the other air masses it would have had a much larger devastating affect.

But my point is that this was more than just a Hurricane. There is no classification for Superstorms like we just experienced. It was unique and Weather meteoroligists will be studying it for years.

I know many folks cringe when they read "global warming". But this is just another extreme storm that proves global warming is not only sound science but evidence that global warming is here and strong and Frankenstorm is clear evidence.

<---------Stepping off the proverbial podium just waiting to count the downvotes now biggrin

    Cheers!

What's amazing is the European model showed this storm for 7+ days and really didn't waver too much. A big coup considering how historic this storm was.

Euro model had it blowing out to sea. US Model had the hook that made its track look like a ? mark.

Edited: I take that statement back. Euro mode was first to predict the hybrid storm By Oct 25 both Euro and American models predicted the largest subtropical Atlantic storm ever.

    Kudos Rack! +1

No...the Euro had this for over a week. The GFS(American model) was OTS as late as Wed or Thurs last week. Euro always had it making a NW W turn as it approached the mid-atlantic.

  • Feel bad for you guys.
I live in North Potomac MD (Pepco country) and was without power for 5 and 6 days stretches in January (snowstorm) and July (Deracho). Its a real nuisance. After one day, everything in your freezer is trash, after 2 days, everything in the refrigerator.

If you have a gas grill/stove, start cooking your meat; hopefuly it doesnt' go to waste.

If there is a oxygen supply company near you, call and see if they have dry ice. A cooler filled with dry ice can save $100s for frozen foods/meats.

    Good luck....

  • Thankful that Andrew and Animal are alright, and hoping that anyone else on the board that has endured Sandy's wrath is ok. These are difficult and stressful times for so many people.

I know what you’re saying. Humans may have figured out how to manipulate the genetics of hundreds of species for their perceived gain (nature), clone animals (nature), eradicate diseases (nature), utilize stem cells (nature), blow the shit out of the entire world with atomic bombs (nature), fill the internet with porn (nature and personal favorite), but there is NO WAY humans are causing global warming by burning billions of gallons of fossil fuels every year resulting in carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere at a rate of approximately 19.8 lbs per gallon burned, trapping heat, remaining for hundreds of years warming the surface of the planet like all those scientist claim and reenact in wacky science experiments. NO WAY!!!

I'm sure the glaciers are melting faster than ever, flowers are blooming earlier in the season, and animals are moving to greater latitudes and altitudes to stay cool because because Simon Said and the humans just couldn't hear Simon speaking.

Ever heard of ice ages and coming out of them? Yea, that was before humans. BTW, while arctic ice is melting, antarctic ice levels are at all time highs. But regardless of whether or not ice caps are melting the cause of such events has never been proven to be humans or burning of fossil fuels. Have to give you a +1 for comparing climate change to porn. That was unexpected and excellent.

Global warming enhanced the magnitude of that burn. Well done, sir.

Also the pressure of this storm was equivalent to a Cat 3 storm. I believe what made the wind not as strong was the size of the storm, but it still packed a lot of power like you said.

I've spent my entire life going to Sea Isle City for vacation and from pictures I've seen on Facebook, it doesn't look as bad as places north of Atlantic City. It's amazing the difference it makes being on the left side of the storm versus the right side during landfall.

Yea, I believe it was record low pressure measured in Baltimore. There have been other hurricanes that came through Baltimore that were higher rated and more direct hits so Sandy was definitely a low pressure beast.

    Hi Michael,

Whilst the "extent" of the Antarctic Ice is increasing, the "mass" of the Antartcic ice cover is decreasing among the ever increasing calving of sea ice glaciers.

And this too is a predicted result of "global warming" no matter how many deniers say otherwise.

    cheers

    Kirk

Antarctic Ice Melt — OSS Foundation

Antarctica is melting, not growing. In fact the ice mass is dropping at an accelerating rate due to multiple factors including accelerated glacial ice calving rates. The loss of sea based ice allows the Antarctic ice to move faster towards the ocean resulting in an increased rate of loss of the Antarctic ice.
