Good for them. Your thoughts on the trade?

Has Rick Nash been traded yet?

  • The Fighting Pegulas get Grigorenko at #12? The guy knows how to strike oil.

    POV

  • Carolina had all the leverage ... When Staal turned down that deal yesterday and then it came out he wouldn't sign an extension anywhere unless he went to Carolina ... well, Carolina was then in the drivers seat.

The trade had to be made, couldn't have this hanging over the season. They maybe could have gotten more at the trade deadline, but maybe not. I wish they got Faulk somehow in the deal, but no way Carolina would budge there.

Keeping them crossed for Zach Parise ... if the pens get him I will love this deal.

Thanks for the memories Jordan and Good Luck.

Great deal for Pittsburgh under tough circumstances. Carolina fans will bitch up a storm about giving up Sutter. Well, they needed to give up a center anyway. Sutter would have been the forth line center there and he isn't that. I was thinking the 8th and Sutter as the compensation. The D-man from BC is pretty good. I will be interested in seeing what Shero has up his sleeve. With the drafting of Poulitt (sp?), they now have him, Despres, Harrington and Morrow as puck moving dman prospects. Remember what he did with the last two offensive minded Dmen he traded - Whitney to Anaheim brought Kunitz; Goligoski to Dallas brought Neal.

Asking for Faulk would have been ridiculous under the circumstances.

Move Martin, sign Parise and we are ready to roll.

Sutter isn't Staal offensively, but he brings a darn good defensive game and has the capability of scoring 15-20 goals per season.

  • Any thoughts on the Sabres draft? Honestly, I don't follow them too much, especially the draft, but I do know that C was their biggest weakness and they took two (traded up to get one at 14).

They needed quality centers. Hodgson is going to be quality. Roy has regressed; Leino sucks and Luke Adam might do something. The Russian is a skilled kid, while the Latvian is a pain in the ass to play against. They did very well.

Calgary GM needs to be shot. He traded down six spots to land a second rounder and got a second round talent at best with that pick. The Flames could have used Girgensons at 14. They could use any kid with skill since that farm system might be the worst in the NHL. They only have one legit prospect.

  • The Pens couldn't afford to resign Staal long term and also keep Crosby, Malkin and Letang, and the Pens also couldn't afford to lose Staal as a UFA next summer without compensation. So they did the best they could under the circumstances.

Sutter is a very good two-way center and will replace Staal on the third line. And $2 million p.a. is a more appropriate salary for a third line center, so Shero will have flexibility to upgrade other areas.

    Cambria Nittany

  • Pens fans booed Holmgren as he goes to the podium and Holmgren says "I was going to thank the City of Pittsburgh for their warm welcome, but ... *eye roll* ... the Philadelphia Flyers are proud to select from Oshawa of the Canadian Hockey League, Scott Laughton."

Next year's draft in Philly should be fun.

Agree ... however, I think if you take the savings from the Staal deal and add that to the salary dump with the trade of Michalek back to Phoenix, its obvious where Shero's mind is - reuniting Crosby with one of his former teammates from Shattuck St. Mary's and I'm not talking Kyle Okposo.

Letang will be interesting. You have two more years of him at one of the best bargains in the NHL (3.5) before he hits UFA. Pittsburgh now has an abundance of puck moving Dmen. Joe Morrow could very well be ready by the time Letang hits the open market. Shero could have been looking at that last year when he drafted Morrow and Harrington back to back and then Pouliott this year.

and even if there was no boo by Pens fans when Holmgren got up there, you could be rest assured Shero would have been booed in Philly. That was automatic regardless.

They'd boo him even though he's Fred Shero's son?

True. But it's clearly not just a Philly thing as it seems you could be implying. Pens fans cast the first stone here.

Yes. Just as the Pens would have booed anyone at Flyers GM this year.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. There is a reason why the Devils are trying for Plan B - Rick Nash.

Flyers always make a splash. I think they may get one of those two. And don't give me the "they don't have cap space" argument. Snider doesn't give a f***.

Like I said, Minny is a real option, but I don't see Pittsburgh as a landing spot. Minny would offer him the keys to the kingdom, more money than anyone else and its home for him. If he doesn't go there, he'll be a Devil. I think teh Pens are more likely to get Sutter and bolster their backend. Honestly, I do like teh Pens as well and would still be able to root for him and see him play if he went there, but I just don't see it. I don't see him anywhere in taht division other than NJ.

Also, I have not seen anything about them making a move for Nash. Who's to say he's not an extra piece and not a plan B if they are after him?? Devils have 27 mil available going into off season and a couple more big contracts of players who will be in their mid-late 30's coming up after next season. They could keep Parise and add Nash. They have plenty of youngsters and lower paid players who could fill out 3-4th lines easily and the defensive prospects are deep as well.

That matches what I've heard from the few Sabres fans I've interacted with. They like Hodgson, but Roy is just frustrating and Leino is nothing. Glad to hear.

  • Not exactly draft related but...

Anyone want to weigh in on the Flyers/Leafs trade? JVR for L. Schenn.

As a Flyers fan its always tough to see a young drafted talent leave but the fact is JVR was a luxury on this team. We have a surplus of offensive talent and a definite lack of up and coming defensive talent. Now I dont know much about Luke Schenn and what I've heard so far is fairly underwhelming despite his young age of 22. Any thoughts? Any Leafs fans on this board?

  • Apparently Filip Fosberg falling to the Caps was a surprise. But I'm not complaining, we needed a center.

  • Question for Flyers fans....

How did they do in their draft? I honestly didn't pay attention at all to the NHL draft. The only thing I know from it is that Staal was traded from Pittsburgh to Carolina and that's from hearsay from Pens fans.

-The Pens leaked the Staal extension info
-Carolina thought they would be able to wait until next year
-Shero pulls in NYR and Washington as bidders, Rutherford concedes Sutter and an excellent prospect (Dumoulin is on par, or better than Despres - could be a McDonagh type)

Shero did extremely well knowing that Staal was not going to sign an extension. the guy knows what he is doing. No doubt the Pens will be in on Parise and Suter. If Martin is moved good chance they land both.

The Pens will have an unreal backline in 2-3 years. Out of the past 4 drafts the Pens currently have 6 prospects that are on track to be Top 4 guys. This is in addition to Letang. Despres, Dumoulin, and Morrow should be regulars by the end of 2013/14.

Yandle was nearly a Penguin Friday night but the Pens needed just a bit more in terms of forward prospects.

Picked a center. They apparently reached a little bit as he was rated as an early 2nd rounder. The Flyers of course had the 20th pick. Some are surprised that they didn't pick a blue liner. But apparently the one they wanted was picked a few choices earlier. Picked a goalie with their 2nd rounder.
