N.H. goalie to join PSU hockey

For New Hampshire Junior Monarchs goalie Tim Carr, it has been a busy week, as he has committed to become the newest member of the Penn State’s new Division I ice hockey team.

I'm really confused. Who are the others? Someone posted in the den about a few yesterday (or two days ago), but then it became clear that they were recruits to the Icers, not the new D-1 team.

It looks like forward Jake Friedman was the first to commit, but Tim wasn't sure who was first when I spoke with him. I will be talking with Jake (who recorded an assist in his team's had a playoff win earlier at 1 pm) later today to confirm who was first, and will have a story up as well.

Either way, there are two commitments to the Penn State hockey program as of now.

  • Thanks for this article, Andrew. Will you be covering hockey on here then, too, I'm assuming?

Sweet. Thanks for the additional info, Andrew. Love hearing the hockey updates.

I was going to start with these two, and go from here. If there is a legitimate interest (which I think there would be) in regards to hockey updates, then yes I'll be covering it.

@BoulderFish - Any recruits this year will be playing on the Icers in the fall, but won't lose a year of NCAA eligibility, meaning that in 2012-13 when the Division-1 NCAA team starts, this years recruits will be playing on that team as well.

  • Sweet Andrew. I'm definitely looking forward to more hockey articles, especially with us going Division I. That seems to make it that much more exciting. I followed the Icers when I was in school and went to a few games.

That is very interesting. Thanks again, Andrew. Consider my hand way up if you're taking a poll of who would be interested in continued news on PSU hockey.

  • I'd love some hockey news. I've been a lifelong Dallas Stars fan, and have always wanted to follow college hockey.

Thanks for the updates, I'm extremely excited to see what we can do here in Hockey Valley.

  • Sure, I'd like to follow the hockey program. Also, did I miss something by way of PSU hiring a coach?

No, you didn't miss a hire, yet. Carr said that when he asked about the future head coach he was told an announcement wouldn't be made public until after the Frozen Four this year (Championship date set for April 9th this year) because Penn State doesn't want to interrupt anyone's season.

That said, Madison.com is reporting that Penn State has received permission from Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, to speak with their women's head coach Mark Johnson. I'll attach the link.

Johnson was a member of the 1980 USA Olympic Gold medal winning squad, and has won three national titles since 2002 as the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers women's team.

Ah, thanks for the info! I just thought it strange that we had one or two recruits already without a coach.

There's definitely no guarantee that Johnson has an offer yet, just a report.

Icers' head coach Scott Balboni has been the one doing most of the recruiting, as he will be staying on as Head of Hockey Operations once a final Division-1 head coach is selected.

  • Johnson is such a no brainer for PSU. While the kids he would be recruiting might not have heard of him, the kids parents sure the heck have - unless they were living under a rock from 1980 on. National experience; gold medal; played for the Penguins and is the son of Badger Bob - a legendary coach who not only brought the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh, but brought a refreshing approach to the game - what's not to like.

I wouldn't be shocked if Johnson's dream job is coaching the men at his alma mater, but eaves isn't leaving anytime soon. Johnson would follow suit of the recent head coach hirings of PSU - wrestling; men's lax; women's lax.

Andrew, hockey updates are a great idea for this site.

It is good these guys can come to PSU a year before the program launches, but to play devil's advocate, wouldn't they be better served playing in high level junior league like the USHL or NAHL rather than in the ACHA (even for a very good ACHA program like the Icers)?

Maybe, maybe not. While the US junior leagues have their fair share of future big name players, the ACHA makes up for a lack of that with older, more physically mature opponents. So there are pros and cons for each situation.
