NFL Draft!

  • I used to love watching the draft all day Saturday and Sunday, but I've stopped watching it since they switched it to Thursday, etc.

  • in the 70's it was Thursday/Friday. In the early 80's it was Tuesday/Wednesday before it moved Sunday/Monday and then to the weekend late 90's.

Well I was a 90's baby, so that's all I know. I can't imagine it was that big of a deal back in the 70's when it was a million rounds?

    PSUfan28

  • it wasn't televised til 1980 by espn and had 12 rounds over two days. I can't remember how they split it up back then but I can tell you that I watched it after high school track practice in 1980 and '81 and then every round for the next five years of college and grad school at PSU.

I remember being in Pittsy's apartment when he got the call from the 49ers. Was one of the very cool moments in my years at PSU.

Just out of curiosity.. who is Pittsy? I don't recall playing anybody with that name.

  • This has nothing to do with this topic, but does anybody else run into an issue where when they refresh their browser the boards that show up are for other colleges?? I have refreshed the lions247 site and come across Notre Dame's site, Ohio States... etc.

Not a big deal.. but there have been a few times where I got excited because we were going after a new Top 247 guy that I had not heard about us pursuing.

And I threw up in my mouth when I saw the Ohio State boards show up - which is just an involuntary reaction to anything Ohio State.

Thanks for the info. Didn't realize the draft was popular so far back.

I'm not (that) ashamed to say I've watched at least 70-85 percent of the draft for each of the last three years. And this is coming from a guy who can't listen to Chris Berman for more than 10 minutes without wanting to punch himself (and Berman) in the face.

Eagles fans, please tell me that they won't screw up the first-round pick too badly this year.

Everyone else -- what are your favorite and least favorite things about the draft?

Bob Ley did the first drafts for ESPN with bunch of folks like Paul Zimmerman and them Mel Kiper. Berman was the off camera guy who came in and reported.

Chris Berman is by far my least favorite part of the draft. Suzy Kolber did day two which sucked much less. Joe Theisman was atrocious with his analysis when on ESPN.

Rich Eisen and Mike Mayock are far superior today.

I liked Mel Kiper before anybody cared about Mel Kiper - Bill Polian screaming 'Who's Mel Kiper" was tremendous after he ripped the Trev Alberts pick.

  • I traded away any reason to watch the draft before Saturday.

RGIII, you better be worth it.

The NFL Network coverage is far superior IMO.

My least favorite Chris Berman-ism is how he goes overkill on the pregnant pause. Not EVERY pick or commercial break is so dramatic that it requires a pregnant pause, Chris.

  • It's sad to say, but I watch ESPN's Draft coverage because of its familiarity, not the quality of the coverage. I see it as pure entertainment and I garner facts from the broadcast, but I take the analysis and opinions with a grain of salt, always.

NFL is prohibiting their media partners from announcing the pick prior to Goodell or whomever is up there.

NFL reminds teams not to leak picks before podium announcement | ProFootballTalk

The NFL really wants to keep the suspense alive during the draft this season. On the heels of the announcement that there will no longer be camera shots of players on the phone with teams in the green room just before they are picked and hints that analysts on the networks covering the event will...

I remember watching the draft, late 80's in high school, back then it started on Sundays and finished on Mondays and it was 12 rounds, then I believe they cut to 7 rounds. It still felt strange for me, up until a few years ago when it started on Saturdays.. now Thursday has me all messed up...

I can recall, being about 12 years old... writing down the draft order, all 12 rounds... then going through and predicting every single pick for all 12 rounds...

I'm still stuck with only ESPN...thanks a lot Cablevision! NFLN is really the only channel I don't get but its so annoying that after all of these years its still not offered.

Yes indeed, fellow J-E-T-S fan, we need someone to complement Holmes.

I believe it was Bill Tobin, not Polian. It was still great nonetheless.

Bill Tobin vs Mel Kiper - 1994 Part 2

The 1994 NFL Draft is remembered for two things - one, it was the draft Marshall Faulk entered the league, and two, it was the year someone challenged the brainpower of draft expert Mel Kiper Jr.. Although Kiper wasn't yet the establishment he is today, where, might I ask, is Bill Tobin?

  • You guys remember Channing Crowder spending like a billionaire before the draft because Kiper had him going 1st round and then eventually his stock kept falling that he went 3rd round to the Dolphins, then blamed Kiper for his reckless spending and his millions he owed the bank before he even received his first paycheck?

  • OK ... if this is an addict meeting ...

Hello, I am a life long Rams fan. Since the Fearsome Foursome ruled the field.

And as of late, the most excitement any Rams fan gets is the draft, because they are horrible and have been so for ten years.

Since 1980, we would watch Berman pompously botch everything, in between rolling out to class. It was a day long event in the day.

Now the mocks are interesting. I still like that historical Baltimoron Mel Kiper, but also like Mike Mayock and McShay.

I really hope to see more activity this year because of the new contract with the players. Salaries for the draft are less astronomical, hopefully. If you sucked, like the Rams, you kept getting high picks, and if you whiffed, your payroll was crushed. Even if you hit, your payroll was crushed, but at least you got a good player. It was a huge injustice for the great unknown.

But this year, the Rams have no one to blame but themselves for screwing up yet again. But a new front office and Jeff Fischer at the helm gives me hope that we won't screw it up too badly.

The Rams need everything except QB and DE. Not that their DEs are all world, but they used two first rounders on DE in the past four years so move on. Here is where need meets Best Player Available. BPA at #6 has to be a need!!! Perfect storm. If they take Justin Blackmon, great, if Trent Richardson falls, great, if Kalil falls, grab him, or if Claiborn is there, grab the idiot. Unless they go off the board without trading down, they cannot lose (famous last words).

Love the NFL draft. Love the Rams. Its gotta see sports programming.

MD, I live close to StL (relatively speaking) and enjoy following the Rams as one of my "backup" teams. Do you go to many games a year?

Rams might be one of those teams that makes that big jump this year. I could see you guys make the playoffs.
I expect the 49ers to come back to earth a little bit, and for the Rams to make a bit of a leap forward.
I guess Rams have had it bad at times, but you were also the 'greatest show on turf' .,

at least you did not grow up a Browns fan.
