My guess is that he has been in a position of power at Merck for so long, that in that position what he says goes, no questions asked. In his capacity with the BOT that is not working out in that he is serving the school and alumni, they are not serving him as his employees. He should be smart enough to see the distinction but it seems that is not the case.
