Munchak A Formality?

  • PSUfanatic25 said...

Not trying to be a downer, but since Munchak has spent his last 30 years in the NFL how do we expect him to be able to recruit well?

That's a valid question, but look at it this way. PSU is going from having a HC that does not recruit to having an NFL hall of famer as HC who played at PSU and is recruiting for us.

Will it take time to make the connections with the high school coaches, of course, but I have zero doubt that Munchak could do it. The guy has excelled at everything he's done in the game of football. There's no reason to doubt him as a college HC.

The assistant coaches will again be key to recruiting, at least to start, but WOW is it going to be nice to have a HC out on the recruiting trail competing with Urban, Hoke, etc.

Knowing how I feel, and the same goes for most of the rest of this board, I'd like to believe that any Penn Stater would answer the distress call of their wounded alma mater. If Munch was to say no as opposed to not getting chosen by Ira, I would NOT understand.

Yeah, hard to understand why a guy would turn his back on 30 years of loyalty from an NFL team, especially right after getting the top job. SMH.

I'm not saying Munchak is my number 1, just saying I would like to believe any Penn State family member would step up and answer the call. The ramifications are not that extreme. And coming home could even mean a pay increase.

The thing I love about Munchak is that he brings instant credibility and respect to the program - seemingly picking up right where JoePa left it. Also, our OL will improve immediately and our S&C will likely drastically change.

Count me as someone who is hoping its not Munchak and thinking he is not a home run hire. There are a lot of question marks with him, especially recruiting. Coaching NFL players is completely different then coaching college players. We have no idea how he would transition. He also has zero personality which will really hurt in recruiting.

Urban Meyer has zero personality. Have you heard him on the ESPN games? He sounds like he's at a funeral.

Munchak has a great personality. he is the type of guy that people will run through walls for..very down to earth, yet tough as nails. I grew up near him in Scranton. His prescence alone will at least get us in the door of top recruits...surrounding himself with a good staff will drive the recruits to us..not to mention, his integrity versus the schmuck at Ohio State will be an easy win for us..he will crush UM at recruiting..mark my words...

...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

Because your owner is an A-hole and cheap. The only reason Mike got the head job is because he was willing to do it on the cheap. And because in college there is no one telling you how to run your team, owner, gm. And being an NFL head coach isn't the most secure job out there. Most get wacked after a couple seasons. So would you rather put up with the BS of the NFL or coach less games and get paid more.

You said you wouldn't understand if he turned the job down. How can you not understand that he's been with the same organization for 30 years working hard to get the job he just got. You really couldn't understand him turning us down? He's also never coaches college, maybe he feels coaching college kids and the college game is not a fit for him. I don't care if he's your #1 I just don't get how you would not understand if he turned us down.

    There's some big reasons:

    1) Answering the call for his school.
    2) A significant pay raise.
    3) Job security
    4) Coaches who have coached both NFL and college say that you have a lot more free time in college than the NFL.

If you think Meyer has zero personality you haven't a clue.

Then I guess I have no clue. From what I've seen and heard on ESPN, I'm not impressed with his personality.

Munchak by his own admission has zero personality. I'll also take the bet that he will crush UM in recruiting.

He might not be in it for the money. If he was answering the call for his school why put them on the join for more money? Why do you think he will have job security? We will never have a HC again where performance doesn't matter. If Munchak failed to win he would be gone.

In 27 years, he just had his best pre-season testing by position average.

He talks about the advantage of training in the pre-season heat and he loves the outdoor stadium.

The team's attendance, attitude and effort were excellent and the team lifts every day. “A lot of teams don’t.” They'll get something, at the very least, to stress a body part before a game, on a 'day off', on a day with a night practice, etc.

He talks a bit of “Art of Strength” training with kettlebells, ropes, etc. Steve was the first NFL strength coach to earn certification in this mode of training.

You are on my friend!! Let's see if he gets hired first. If he does, I will bet that our recruiting class goes from #45 where we are now to #15-18...somewhere in that range I also bet that we will keep all of our current verbal commits.

I'm betting that UM will have better recruiting classes then us. You said he would crush UM in recruiting, not that our class would improve. Our class will improve with any name hire.

Thanks for the summary. Impressive and I like the sounds of it.
