Moxie will be better this year (kind of)

  • I wish we had a better option then moxie for qb. That being said I think he will be better then last year or at least will appear to be better. For the first time in a long while we have a staff and head coach who will design game plans to attack our opponents and to hide our weaknesses. I think bob will not put moxie in situations to make to many mistakes. I do not think moxie will necessarily win games but I think bob will not Allow him to make mistakes to cost us games, I am thinking bubby brister from the steelers years ago or at least that is what I am hoping.

  • Bubby Brister. There's a name I haven't heard in years.

Regarding McGloin, he has two truly disastrous games in his PSU career -- the Outback Bowl against Florida and last year's Alabama game. Take away those two games, and he has been no worse than an "average" B1G QB, IMO.

A name I could do without. The only other Steeler QB worse I can't say out loud....

Even if we had a staff with Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs and Don Coryell in their prime, I don't think even they could hide the weaknesses of McGloin.

Coaches can only do so much. They physically can't go through reads and progressions, and they can't give him a steriod injection before the game to increase that wet noodle he has for an arm.

Ultimately, this team will ride on the successes and failures of McGloin, and IMO, there will be more failures than successes. I just wished we had chosen the QB with less physical limitations......................this way, I could stomach the mistakes a bit more, knowing that that individule at least that the "ability".

I disagree. He could be good at times, but he wasn't getting any help from the play calling. So with with an actual good offensive mind calling plays, things can't get worse.

It will be nice to have TEs on the field this year. We haven't gotten much from the position since Quarless.

Should help McG with an option when under pressure. In the past, this is where rag arm McG has pushed the ball outside or downfield, which resulted in INTs.

  • As long as Moxie's thinks his arm is stronger than it really is, he will make mistakes.

Calling Matt "Moxie" is demeaning to him. Matt was a walk-on not a recruited player.

If you are angry with anyone it should be the JoePa regime.

That's true, but you cant underestimate how much a difference a good QB coach (or two) can make. Watching OB coach in the spring, even in small clips publically released, he was a drill sergeant. I cant imagine that McGloin didnt get better this sping under his work, and he will not stand for repeated mistakes. McGloin best recognize his shortcomings and alter his decision-making or he will find himself on the bench IMO.

    NorthsideLion

  • Trock, I agree.

As you said, OB will design an offensive gameplan that plays to McGloin's strengths. As much as we love to knock the kid, he does some things well. The problem is that he isn't a big time QB, so there's a lot he can't do. Teams that are smart AND have talent will take advantage of that.

The good news is that the running game will be the primary focus this year, and we have a few cats who can tote the rock. I expect Silas to have less carries, but have a better ypc this year. Belton, Zwinak, and possibly Dukes should also get a decent number of carries as well.

I intentionally didn't include that game because he was actually very good in the first half. He threw 2 TD passes, which was the most by a PSU QB in the 'Shoe since the early 1960s. However, in the second half Tressel made some good adjustments that Galen/Jay didn't answer, and McGloin was then put in the type of bad spot that TRock described in his original post.

    Cambria Nittany

  • How dare you say anything even remotely positive about McGloin? Prepare to be shamed into never speaking on this board again.

Oh please, get a grip. He is a cocky hot head. Has nothing to do with the former regime.

  • Silas's ability to stay healthy and productive (which in turn is related to the work of the OL) will really determine Matt's success this season. He has the brain and the instincts to be successful, but he needs the help from those around him and behind him in the backfield. The complexity of the offense will not hinder Matt's ability to succeed, he is up for it.

Good post. I agree. It's about the offensive line and our ability to run the ball.

He earned the title off the field more so than on field actions. Sometimes one reaps what they sow, this was entirely within Matt's control.

Brains and instincts mean nothing when you lack the ability to execute what they are telling you to do (would also disagree about "brains"). The complexity of the offense and the relative weakness of our defense will play a much larger role in any opportunity for Matt to impove, let alone be average or successful. Silas being Silas never stopped Matt from slinging it into the arms of defensive backs before, and it's less likely that his consistently crappy performances will be bailed out by a staunch D and one decent drive (Illinois '11). I'm expecting more of the same from him and anticipate a new starter by the time he starts to blow it every year (late October).

Geez, had the Joe Regime been able to recuit and develop QB's PSU probably wouldn't be starting a former walk-on.

True but if moxie was not a cocky prick who thought he was an elite qb he would not make so many mistakes and dumb throws and would be a more productive qb. He also would not have a need for fans to try and defend his play by blaming the old staff.

And by the way he is still a walk on who has earned a scholarship. He came to the team via being a walkon. Someone who was not offered a ship. So be proud he is a WALKON still who earned a ship and makes dumb throws and has a weak arm but has the cockiness of a 5 star elite qb.
