Penn State opened up practice last week to give the media a chance to see the team on its first day of spring drills.

  • Khairi Fortt looks like an NFL linebacker. His calfs are insane!

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

  • I know we pick on the old staff a lot, and not to beat a dead horse... but imagine the difference for a guy like, Silas Redd to be working with London, as opposed to Galen Hall. Not that Hall was a bad coach, I think he had a decent offensive philosophy, but as a RB coach? Come on... come to think about it, you do have to wonder the impact that had on or RB recruiting over the past decade? We had a few studs... LJ, Royster, Silas, Hunt... but certainly not the depth or the "stable" of backs like we were accustomed to in the past... with guys we tried to recruit, say a Marcus Lattimore... was he really gonna come here, and learn the intricacies of the position from a over-weight man in his mid 70's?

  • Maybe it was just the camera angle, but in the shot of our starting OL, they didn't look that big weight-wise. Dieff does look ideal for center.

  • Farrell and Ushel need to stay near by training table and never stop eating... I hope they each put on at least 15 by next season...

I'd say there at the low end, but theyll put on weight. Theres more important things than weight, especially at this point in the year. Im more happy they're getting proper technique and weight training right now. MUCH MUCH more important than raw weight.

That said, don't expect us to ever have this big fat OL. Fitz2 wont have it and neither will Mac. They'll be 300+ pounders, but they'll be fit, and long for the most part.

I expect Farrell to be around 295-300 when season starts, Urschel to be about 295, Gress - prob stay the same, Diff - hope he can get up to 295

You do realize the offense at Okalahoma when the had greats like Billy Sims, coached Emmitt Smith at Florida and Smith thought so much of him that he had him brought to Dallas at the end of his time with the Cowboys. Yep, what would the all time NFL leading rusher know about having a good RB coach?

Compared to Charles London who was the RB at Duke, and the quality control coach for the Bears and then Titans.

Your right Hall couldn't hold London's jock.

I wouldn't say it was a knock on his coaching abilities, but more so on whats more attractive to running back recruits. I do agree with that point because hall never recruited. So unless the kid made it to campus, he would never meet his future position coach. Not the ideal situation when you are battling for a top tier recruit who is wanted by everyone.

  • I saw Deffenbach around this time last year in the burgh. He was eating at Primantis and I damn near gave him my cap n' cheese. Recognized his babyface but coudlnt' believe how lean he was. Couldn't have been more than 260 at the time. I'm sure he's put on weight since but still looks like he has a ways to go.

  • Emmitt played at Florida 22 years ago...
Billy played at Oklahoma 32 years ago...

I said, I have no problem with Hall as a coach, he is and was a very solid offensive mind, and I appreciate the work he did here over the past decade. However, it is my opinion, that a 17 year old kid, walking onto a college campus would likely prefer the coaching of a man like Charles London, who is younger and a bit more relatable, than that of Hall at this point in his career. You are free it disagree.

  • I may have missed an update - but it seems like most if not all of our O-lineman had braces on.

Is this something they're going to be headed towards?

Many many many D1 teams require all OL to wear knee braces regardless of injury history. Usually you dont notice them because they are covered.

That's true and I think it's a great practice. I just don't remember them on all PSU olinemen in the past - wondering if it's a new policy with BOB.
