Joe is being crucified for doing what he was supposed to do...and because those in charge completely dropped the ball.

and it's not even clear to me that those above him dropped the ball because I'm not convinced McQueary told them it was anything more than "horsing around." Since they already had experience with a similar story, I can't condemn them for thinking it was just like 98 because if I had been in their shoes I'd probably have done the same thing.

Those guys were not mind readers, and they didn't have a crystal ball to tell them everything we know now and that Sandusky would end up in jail, With what they knew then along with seeing Sandusky working hard on the charity, I think it would have been really difficult to suspect he was really a monster.

Unfortunately he did what I am supposed to do as a teacher. Report it up the chain of command. I know that doesn't sound right but it's the law and what you are supposed to do. Add in his age and the old fashion ways of how he must have seen things and hence " The Perfect Storm."

it's what we were told to do when I was coaching in PA. report to head coach, then let the school administrators follow the procedure set forth by the state.

whether that procedure is messed up is another issue.

Exactly, there are 100's of laws that are asinine, doesn't mean we don't have to follow them or we can do what we "think" the law should be instead... So now, not only should Joe have gone vigilante coach, he should have challenged the Commonwealth of PA's laws and told them what was ridiculous or not.... sure.

You are exactly right on both procedure and questioning the law itself. Not sure that I would have done anything differently given the info out there. You are supposed to trust your superiors. Guess that's why the law could be/is changing.

    Except he was 100% correct.

Once McQueary involved Joe, Joe had a right/duty to report it to the administration, which he did.

If Joe had gone to the cops, it would've meant McQueary had to come forward on his own...which, given his decisions in the aftermath of his discovery, he clearly did not want to do. So, Joe goes to the PSU admin so that they can handle THEIR problem (i.e. Sandusky, as he is no longer under Joe's command).

Joe is being crucified for doing what he was supposed to do...and because those in charge completely dropped the ball.

And with that, I await the hounds...

Yep. Joe is being crucified for following PA law and University guidelines. he did the right thing and was crucified for it. Sickening.

    PENN STATE FOREVER

  • My wife was a grade school teach who reported a sexual incident. She didn't hear anything, after 3 weeks from the principal she took it to the assistant superintendent. She ended up with a letter of reprindand in her file for not following proper chain of command.

"Did you consider calling the police?" Posnanski asked.

"To be honest with you, I didn't," Paterno responded. "This isn't my field. I didn't know what to do. I had not seen anything. Jerry didn't work for my anymore. I didn't have anything to do with him. I tried to look through the Penn State guidelines to see what I was supposed to do. It said that I was supposed to call Tim [Curley]. So I did."

The vultures will have a field day with this quote. hammer

Apparently the common sense answer of telling McQuery to call the police eluded him.

And John McQueary, Dr. Dranov, and Tim Curley, Gary Schultz, and oh yeah... the guy who actually witnessed whatever the hell happened in Mike McQueary himself.

So I guess that means that Mike McQueary, John McQueary, Dr. Dranov who may have been going against the law by not going to police when notified, Joe Paterno, Tim Curley, Gary Schultz, Graham Spanier, soon after Wendell Courtney and perhaps even more people - ALL cared SO MUCH about Penn State football (so much so that NONE of their e-mails, notes, or other records of communication even reference anything related to football) that several of them were willing to risk facing criminal charges, ruined reputations and in the case of Mike McQueary, a guilty conscience for the rest of his life. ALL because everyone was the biggest Penn State football fan ever, and coincidentially are of the most evil fabric known to man all in this one situation to "protect" a football program from a retired coach being arrested. (Because we all know when coaches get arrested or has their name tarnished, it sets the program back forever - just ask Missouri and Gary Pinkel, and Syracuse basketball).

    OR

McQueary didn't see any rape. Was simply bothered by a man and child showering alone, and told his father and Dranov that night. And when the inquisitive mind of Dr. Dranov, who would sensibly ask the question "was it sexual?" since he is a doctor and may be required by law to report a potential crime against children, McQueary simply answered no since he saw no rape occur.

I know which one makes sense to me.

I'm not sure where Gary Pinkel crossed the line. But I do know he took some heat for being a stand-up guy for JoePa. And for that I am grateful.

On people saying he protected Sandusky over children

"How could they think that?" he asked, and no one had the heart to answer. "They really think that if I knew someone was hurting kids, I wouldn't stop it?"

So I should believe that a guy who was more concerned with ruining his bosses weekend then protecting a kid would stop it.

Try to fathom the hypocrisy of a Government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured .but not prove they're a citizen

Pinkel was arrested for DWI last year.
