Some excellent points in here. From the beginning, I've told anyone who will listen that the word moral is as concrete as the word widget is. It is not something tangible, you can't define it. It is simply something that one discovers for themselves internally. To use your definition of morals on someone else is inappropriate at best, irrational at worst. Hard evidence should carry the day, but so many failed miserably to acknowledge that in this particular fiasco. The ironic part is that many people who have attacked Joe for his failure of moral responsibility are now being shown to have very little of it themselves, by their own definition of the term.
