Monday practice tidbits

  • Here are our notes from Monday's practice sessions:

    - Good news for the defensive backfield, as starting cornerback Stephon Morris returned to practice today. Morris, who had been out with a stinger since last Tuesday, participated in everything except contact drills.

    - After spending some time in the doghouse, DeOn'Tae Pannell is back with the one's at left guard. Matt Stankiewitch, who was running in that spot for the first week, is back to being the No. 2 center. His move means Ty Howle will move back down with the three's.

    - In Pannell's spot at the second team left guard, redshirt freshman Eric Shrive moved up from the third team. Johnnie Troutman, who just returned to practice on Saturday, is still running with the fourth team.

    - We got some questions about the rest of the offensive line, it looks as if Quinn Barham has the left tackle position locked up. He's been solid this summer, and has worked hard at improving his footwork to play on the left side. Barham has exceeded expectations since the switch.

    - Center Doug Klopacz is holding his own at center. He's been steady with his snaps and in pass protection. 'Steady' is the word that has been used to describe him so far.

Not a surprise to see Pannell back so quick with the first team. Hopefully the line starts to jell to protect an inexperience QB.

We will learn a lot about this team in week 2. The atmosphere and the quality players on Alabama is something that we have not seen in a long time. I would think Miami in the early 2000s would be comparison.

  • I would have hoped that one of the RS-FR would have stepped up and at least pushed, but it seems like that didn't happen.

Disappointed in Shrive. There was a lot of buzz around the kid last summer and fall.

  • Barham concerns me a lot at LT too...after the debacle last year with our tackles, thats a huge question mark for me. The rest of the OL actually appears to be shaping up OK...let's hope Troutman's ready to go by week 1.

I agree. I don't think he has the footwork, size, or athleticism to be a LT. However, I will give him credit for all his hard work. At least he seems to be taking this serious, unlike Pannell.

Try to fathom the hypocrisy of a Government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured .but not prove they're a citizen

I question the Oline coaching. Our line really seems to struggle when we play teams with equal or more talent.

  • Completely agree... We have recruited OL well over the last few yrs, I too am hoping that some o the recent 4/5 stars step/wake up. Hard to have faith in barham - want to but he's been under radar for 3 yrs

  • Out of Gress, Shrive, Ricketts, Diff, and a few others we should have a top 10 national OL in a few years.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.
