Mods - Other sports focus

  • Just a note to the mods...I know you guys understand that the next years are going to be very bleak for Penn State Football. It will be tough to convince your readers to stick it out with their subrscriptions after hearing about todays annoucement. Not too many will want to hear about 1 and 2 star recruits that are looking at Penn State and getting an occassional 3 star to sign up. We will hardly be competitive and it will be a struggle no doubt.

I would recommend that you add focus to other sports. I love football but would love to see additional focus on other sports in light of the announcements and impact to PSU Football over the next 4+ years. Just a thought.

    I second this!

I am definitely going to be watching a lot of Hockey, Wrestling and other sports that I typically only catch casually!

  • I can't speak for all the Mods/Staff but a few notes...

    - Jeff has also covered the basketball program extensively through his years at CDT. The site is in good hands between he (the team) and Andrew (recruiting) in that respect.

    - Andrew has done a really nice job relaying hockey info as it's unfolded. Since the program is just getting started, there will be increased coverage as its profile develops.

    - Both Seltz and Lang follow the wrestling program very closely. I can't say anything definitive, but wrestling coverage will likely grow in the coming seasons as the program inevitably continues to prosper. At the least, there will be plenty of conversation.

    - Frankly, those are the three other current sports programs which could generate interest even remotely close to the football program. Football and football recruiting are what keep many of us coming back on a daily basis.

  • Without the financial support, where do you think the "other" sports are going to get the funding?

Remember,PSU funds all soprts programs from the athletic dept. budget.

Hockey and wrestling are safe. They're well funded from private sources. Basketball garners enough from its own television contract as well. Soccer, baseball, volleyball, etc. should be alright. Beyond that, who knows?

I would have to think that Women's athletics will be fine...we can't have DOE down our throats for Title IX violations also.

  • Would definitely like to see expanded coverage for Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Wrestling, Soccer, etc. We'll see how football shakes out (still hopeful to some extent that we actually will be able to talk about it), but would love to see the expanded coverage and expertise. I'd stay committed if that's the case long term. I still like to follow Penn State.
