  • Bulldog Backer PMed me a pretty solid report. I'm thankful for that. He seems fairly confident that if Mullen said he's not coming, he means it.

Since joining the 247 network we have had a good core of people with good "inside" information. Bulldog Backer has been, in the past, one with good info as well as some others that have graced this site. But with any good info minds can still be changed. I might look foolish in the end by saying this, but when it comes to Mullen he gives it to you straight. He has never waivered from anything that I can think of except maybe gametime depth chart changes. So if he endeed told players he is staying I believe him. He said the same thing when Miami and Florida came calling, so.

If he told to players he is staying, he needs to fess up and tell them he didn't have an offer. Don't go around pimping yourself saying you have an offer you don't have. That will come back and bit you in the as*.

I agree with you, but does anyone really know for sure if he does or not? Is it possible to keep the media mobs out of the loop?

    Exactly.

Urban Meyer: "I am happy here in Utah, I will not be leaving to pursue the vacancy at Florida"
    ...
Urban Meyer: "I am happy as a broadcaster and analyst, and will not be returning to college football as a coach."
    ...
Nick Saban: "I am the head coach of the Miami Dolphins."
    ...
Bobby Petrino: "I am a selfish ass, and I am taking off in the middle of the night."

Coaches can't always tell the truth in these situations. They are multi-million dollar deals.

    Mind forwarding that to me?

I went by MSU first, right before the Mullen presser and got annihalated over there. I got a few solid responses, but most of them were not happy I was there poking around. It ended up getting deleted.

    TIA.

Serious question, not trying to inflame or anything, but didn't Mullen interview for both of those jobs?

Or did he tell them to move on?

I don't mean this is in a bad way at all, but if there is anybody that can take Miss. State farther than they've been in the past and make y'all consistenly successful its Mullen. Your division doesn't do y'all any favors, but if you outrecruit Ole Miss and keep the top talent in-state y'all could be a pretty competitive 8 or 9 win program, maybe 7 because of the level of competition in the West.

Mullen seems like a good fit in Starkville, and I love his attitude. I'm not sure why people say being cocky is a bad thing. I love it. It would be a complete 180 degree change from Joe's days and to be honest, I'd welcome it with open arms. It'd be nice to get some fresh approaches up here.

A lot of times it isn't either side, but the other coaches letting slip to some journalist they know who reports it.

Coaches all talk. A lot of them know each other, and at the very least know each other's name and basic info.

Maybe Mullen tells an OC or and S&C coach what's happening, one of them tells their wife, and the wife tells the DC's wife when they see each other, and it goes from there.

FWIW, from our side, Joyner keeps everything close to the chest and doesn't let anything slip, but maybe an assistant or two here are more likely to let info go now that they're on their way out?

Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen vehemently denied a Jackson WAPT-TV report that he is close to a deal with Penn State.

“Yeah I heard about the TV report," Mullen said Tuesday night at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson. “It’s the most irresponsible reporting that I’ve ever heard of.”

Mullen said he had not been so much as contacted by Penn State “or any other school.”

Mullen, in town for the Conerly Trophy presentation dinner, then took it a step further.

“I blame it on rival institutions trying to ruin our recruiting which we have dominated in this state over the past three years,” Mullen said.

WAPT reported that “Sources close to Mississippi State University’s program have said that football coach Dan Mullen is close to signing a deal t replace Joe Paterno at Penn State.”

Mississippi State athletic director Scott Sticklin, also attending Monday’s Conerly Trophy presentation, also denied the WAPT report.

Said Stricklin: “They quoted a source close to the school. I can’t imagine who that could be, because I haven’t been contacted by Penn State and Dan hasn’t been contacted by Penn State. It’s not a story, period.”

Contacted by The Clarion-Ledger about his station’s report, Ray Coleman of WAPT said: “According to my source, Penn State was going to make an announcement today that Dan Mullen would be the next head coach.”

Late Tuesday, Joe Gailbraith, a spokesman for the MSU football program, posted on his Twitter account the following: “Kind of WAPT’s Ray Coleman to come to the Hall of Fame to apologize for station’s erroneous report.”

Meanwhile, Mullen was asked if he had an idea what rival school might have planted the story.

“You take it from there,” he said.

Earlier today, ESPN college football reporter Joe Schad and the Scranton (Pa.) Times, citing unidentified sources, reported that Mullen is Penn State’s top target.

Mullen has posted a 20-17 record in three years at MSU. He led the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record last season, including a 52-14 win against Michigan in the Gator Bowl. MSU is 6-6 this season and is bowl-eligible in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 11 years.

Mullen, a New Hampshire native, has ties to Pennsylvania and his father is a Penn State alum.

Paterno was fired after 46 seasons after child sex abuse charges against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky surfaced earlier this month.

Penn State formed a search committee on Monday and has begun arranging interviews, according to ESPN.

In an interview in Starkville this afternoon, Mullen said he considered the rumors and potential interest from other programs “great” for Mississippi State.

“I think it’s great for the program,” he said. “… There are two rumors about you: either rumors you’re going somewhere or rumors you’re getting fired. So, I’ll take the going-somewhere rumor better than the getting-fired rumor.”

For more, read Brandon Marcello's blog here:

Staff writer Brandon Marcello contributed to this report.

And yet, Danny boy supposedly told his players that he received an offer from PSU, but turned it down. Which is it Dan? You are starting to sound more and more like your former boss at Florida - especially if you told your team of this fake PSU offer.

So is PSU a steppingstone. You just don't know it because your last coach was there since the Eisenhower administration. Any great coach will not have PSU on his list of great programs. PSU has not performed that well in the past twenty years.

Ugggh. Keep your delusions at home. Everyone knows the kind of prestige and fanbase that comes with being PSU's Head Coach, there's no need to lie to yourself in order to make yourself feel better at the notion that your coach might be leaving you for us.

You are either delusional or a total moron if you do think great coaches don't have PSU on his list of great programs. Your choice - moron or delusional.

Stepping stone and PSU? 170-75 over the last 20 years ... three Big 10 titles, more than 15 bowl appearances and several double digit win seasons. Add in the TV exposure, the resources and atmosphere, this is far from a stepping stone destination. No, PSU hasn't played like PSU could over the last two decades, but ...

You serious Clark? (Dollar for anyone who gets that movie reference)

But im not saying Penn State has been the national powerhouse it was and should be. But its still a top 5-10 job in the country. No one with any sort of brain, including ESPN, would argue that. I know a lot of Buckeye fans (I feel you're one of those people) that have said they liked the Joe held on because he was restraining the potential that PSU had.

    But troll on.

There is always confusion in passing information 3rd hand. A father of an MSU player reported the comments Mullen made to the players. What Mullen said is that he turned down an offer. What we have later discovered is that Illinois was probably the specific offer. One of the players specifically asked if he was going to Penn State? He told the players practice starts Friday and we have to get ready for the bowl game. He added "don't worry, I'm not going anywhere."

What some of you may be interested in is how Mullen decided to come to Mississippi State. Megan is a sports television journalist and worked as an anchor for the Golf Channel.

Here is some press on that story:
