Mike Hull Tweet

  • Tony Mancuso ‏@GoPSUTony
    LB Mike Hull said he maxed out at 405 pounds on the bench this summer. Best of anyone on the team this summer

    Find it a little sad that it was the best ouf of anyone on the team

    Keep in mind that it's slightly easier for Hull to do the bench, but also remember some guys pick up the technique's slower and Fitz essentially had to teach each kid the right technique before letting them go deep into weights.

  • That is startling and sad and is a direct indication of the prior regimes S&C. That will surely change in 2-3 years time.

  • How is that even possible? I played D3 football, and we probably had 10 guys that could do over 400 one rep max on the bench. I'm skeptical of that statement.

    LordJeff

  • Very impressive for a backer of his build.

    agreed, i would think kids like Hill, Stank, Daquan Jones could do 405 or more

    Nittny65

  • Perhaps he was saying it was best of any backer on the team. That, I could see. (However, I'd still be a tad surprised that no other backer could max out at over 405.)

    You do realize how much weight that is for someone at 240lbs.

    Not really that outrageous but not a big deal other LB's can't do it....however it is a big deal that some of our 300-320 pound big guys can't bench 400 pounds. It should be easy for some of our athletes of this caliber to bench 100 over their weight. Like I said, direct indication of prior S&C. It will change in a couple years for sure.

  • I hope he meant of any LB or maybe pound for pound the best, like compared to weight... I remember before that it was said that he was pound for pound strongest on the team... Hopefully that's what the tweet means. Linemen should be able to do more than that... But it is pretty good for his size... If this is true verbatim, the previous weight regime is totally inferior.

    it sure sounds like the whole team.........our previous weight program was horrible, just think we are now realizing how bad it really was

  • It's not the entire quote.

    It was the best on the team (in the spring) but the coaches did not let them push too hard as they were just getting into that type of lifting. He said he and others could have done more.

    Hope we all feel better now.

    doesn't make me feel any better, the fact that a 220 pound linebacker was the best on the team - given how much they were allowed to push themselves shows you how weak our linemen were

    Nittny65

  • LBU59, I do. And, we had 2 or 3 guys (who were clean by the way), who could do that on my D3 college football team at that weight, let alone what the linemen could do. Based on the full quote that strayer provided, I think we've all (myself included) slightly overreacted though.

    The last regime's weight program was inferior... That's what I think everyone is getting from this... We upgraded big time. People don't want to say it out of respect... But it's pretty obvious. Im just excited for year 2 with Fitz.

  • IIRC wasn't Hull a powerlifting champ at a young age???... Technique probably didn't need much work, and he could get right into Fitz's program.

  • I am not too worried about our "what do you bench" stats. I am much more interested in our squats and deadlift stats. Much more important than bench.

    You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

  • Not sure how it is sad, nor do I think it translates to play on the field. Do you think Mauti would be better if he could bench 500? Is bench a skill that any football player uses on the field? Also, not sure the staff really wanted to push the kids to max out. That is how you get injuries in the weight room.

    And even more important than the deadlift is the clean.

    I always preferred checking out my triceps in the mirror.

    Remember safety first, use these 7 simple rules:
    1.) Use a squat rack and a straight bar;
    2.) Do at least 15 sets of 5 reps;
    3.) Five minute rests between sets;
    4.) Grunt loudly while contracting the muscle;
    5.) Swing your entire body focusing specifically on using your lowerback; and,
    6.) Drop the weight to the ground after each set.

  • Some of you guys are ridiculous - I love Fitz and the new program - but to dismiss the old regime based on this tweet is ignorant.

    I consistantly see more and more programs putting more emphasis on the deadlift than cleans. I only coach high school, so maybe it's different in college, but when I spoke to Philip Daniels two years ago, we talked about lifting in the NFL, and he told me a lot of the guys were deadlifting more than any other exercise. He also said he had his son start deadlifting at a pretty young age, and would not let him do many other power exercises until he had mastered the deadlift.

    Also, a good friend of mine who was an assistant strength trainer at UConn, had all his players deadlifting much more than he had them doing cleans.
