Midseason Report Card: Offense

With half the 2012 season in the books, we grade out the Nittany Lions' offense a position at a time.

  • Hard to argue with those grades.

  • Agree...although early red zone struggles would maybe lower some of the scores for me across the board. The last 4 games have been outstanding though. Overall, very fair and frankly a nice change. Be interesting to see how our offense does with the climate and winter conditions approaching. MM hasn't shown he can be real accurate in windy conditions. The short passing game may help and certainly the improved running game will excel.

Good stuff. Agree with all of it for the most part. Everyone seems to be doing ok, but all have room to improve still.

  • shrug Sorry, Jeff, I have to agree too. If you made me disagree on something, I'd put our WR's a bit lower.

  • I'll admit, the offense has exceeded my expectations for this year so far. I honestly didn't think there was much BOB and company could do to help McGloin this year but it's crazy to see how much MM has progressed and evolved in such a short amount of time. It all starts with him and our OL and both are playing extremely well halfway through the season. It's pretty scary thinking about how much MM improved and what that possibly means for our QB's that are in the system for 4 years like a Bench, Hack and anybody else who comes on board. McWhorter as our OL coach is already paying dividends and of course some of that credit goes towards Fitz and his S&C staff too.

  • We are better than the 3.5 yds per carry. All the QB sneaks on 3rd/4th and short are bringing our numbers down.

And those random 20-yard sacks where McGloin keeps running around without throwing the ball away...

  • On a lighter note, Matt McGloin and Silas Redd are still tied in the infamous rushing TD category. Both have 5 on the year. rockon

WR's overall should be lower. Lots of drops and besides A Rob, no one is scaring anyone...

Ok. Ok. You asked for it. I think a- is a bit lofty of a grade for the quarter backs. Much better than before? Sure. Compared to some A qb's around the country I think MM is more like a B. serviceable and a winner but I think an A- is too high.

I would also grade the o line a little higher. Its shame sacks count against rushing yards in college vs passing yards in pros. I am real happy with the pass blocking and think the sacks from MM holding the ball too long or having a lack of mobility coupled with all the sneaks really bring down the 3.5 yrds per carry average

Keep in Mind that's the midway grade. I guess it's like the Presidential debates: nobody expected Romney to perform above average and b/c he did, he is perceived to be better than his performance. Likewise, Nobody expected MM to be better than average (expectations even less than average) and the guy is throwing +60%; 5 rushing TDs, 12 throwing TDs and a TD to INT ration of 6:1; Best QB in the B1G! Holy crap!! who'd a thunk it? So while B may be justified, the A- sits well for the 1st half of the year. Let's see how he does during the "meat" of the schedule. This is where Men will be separated from Boys! IMHO.
