McWhorter, Strollo, and Fitz...

  • One of the key improvements of this staff is its ability to teach and educate players. I think our old staff was very stagnant and set in its ways beyond Joe. Mac McWhorter and John Strollo have done a tremendous job of coaching up these kids on the oline. In only 6-8 months and probably less of real coaching we are seeing some of the best oline and TE play at PSU in years, and by all acounts with a group of guys that may not be the best from a star/recruiting rating standpoint. The oline was supposed to be a big question mark and it has been a significant strength. Give a few points to Fitz as well for his job with the S&C program.

    I foresee this becoming a perennial strength for us and see us getting many of the top recruits for OL and TE. It's been a pretty good area for us in the past but the kids never seemed to materialize until late in their college careers if ever. I don't see that being the case moving forward.

  • I think I could go on for hours about the old staff...but I don't see any point to disparaging them further.

    I'm very excited to see what this coaching staff can do with the players they select to recruit, and then develop. This year we're only seeing a little bit of the potential for what this program could be.

    OL and TE recruits probably won't flock to us due mainly to sanctions. But we will still get good players...just not many great ones.

    I don't want this to come off as a bash session on the old staff. It is simply an opinion that is turing into a point of fact that this staff seems to develop players and teach more effectively than the old staff. I am very excited to see the future of this program.

  • I think all the coaches have done outstanding jobs and the squad seems to have taken to them. Don't forget Coach Fisher and the QBs. It'll be very interesting to watch a youngster like Bench develop.

    This staff is head and shoulders over last years. Not only was Anderson disengaged and well past his prime but he also split line duties with Kenny. Their use of different rooms to review film was insane. The work of our O-line is a tribute to Fitz. This line has improved and is about to become very good at just the right time. I don't even want to think about the Galen to Jay to Red to Joe offense play calling. Just bizarre.

    Don't forget the holder and long snapper. A kick happens in a split second and it takes precision by all 3 involved, espicially the kicker, but the snapper and holder need to make it possible for the kicker to have a chance. And considering the 2 blocked FGs are part of Ficken's 6 misses. Seems to me there's an opportunity to coach up the entire FG unit on special teams.

    Yeah...Ficken's had his share of misses, but a couple have been on the blockers and not Ficken.

  • i really like that zwinak and robinson have come on this season as well bc it shows recruits that any elite skill player will be utilized in this offense, while at NE, bob was known as having a QB and TE oriented offense.. it really sucks we have to wait 5 or 6 years for this offense to hit it's full potential, but the wait will be worth it when it happens.. especially since by then the veteran players will not only have the playbook down, but also be in tip top shape under fitz.. Hoping Hack sticks bc him and Brenneman can be the bridge thru these sanctions and we could be pretty good on the other side..

  • While I generally agree with the OP, I'm waiting to see how the OL does against the likes of Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc.

    The staff has been together for only a relatively short time and run a complex offense. I'm excited to see what the staff can do with kids who have been in their system for 3-4 years.

    WIth regards to recruiting, I'd be drooling if I was a top OL recruit in 2014 looking at the depth chart, especially at OT.

  • Not to play devil's advocate here but the past staff lacked on the recruiting trail but must have done something right to field competitive teams. They did more with less which is what good coaching is all about. They did underperform at times too so don't get in a pissing match with comments.

    We found under recruited guys like champs.

    The old staff had no reason to care -as they knew they would never get fired.

    Nice to see people being held accountable for their performances now. Which is why of course LJ Sr and Vandy were kept while Jay Pud and the rest of the inept offensive machine were given their walking papers

    Last year we'd get thrown around like Temple, this year when it's 3rd and 1 you KNOW they are going to get the first down.
