McGloin named starting quarterback

  • Does this mean he gets the first series then he and PJ alternate? Oh, nevermind......

  • I'll be the first to admit I've never been a fan of McGloin but it was VERY important for the coaching staff to make this decision now and not draw things out any longer. I really believe that Moxie will benefit hugely from getting all of the first team reps in the fall instead of competing for time with the starting offense.

That said, I also really hope that he doesn't become too complacent now that he's been awarded the job. I got the feeling late in 2010 when he took over the starting role that he wasn't trying as hard once the job was his. But I have a lot of faith that BOB and crew know what they're doing here. I selfishly hoped that PJ would get the nod, but now that we have a decision, McGloin has my full support going forward (unless he seriously screws up nono).

  • Well at least Hack must be having a good day.

  • Congrats to Matt, he has worked very hard and deserves to be a true #1 going into a season for a change. People forget that he and Rob were both put in bad situations last year. I cant wait to see what he can do with a good qb coach, serious reps all summer, and a new offense in place. I have a feeling he is going to make a lot of people eat their words when its all said and done.

I also dont expect that short of a leash....it is a new offense and you cant put that kind of pressure on the kid out of the gates. Let him make a few mistakes and learn from it (within the new system). I also feel it will be important for PJ to get some good reps those first few games if we have the game under control, something that hasn't always happened in the past until too late in the game to make it meaningful from an experience standpoint.

Yeah, except that McGloin completed 54% of his passes with 8 TD and 5 INT last year in a worthless offense.

I get that people don't like McGloin. He's not a great quarterback, but he at least deserves the fairness of getting your facts straight.

Wow, I was so far off. His stats are way better than I had guessed. I wonder if you could report the stats against the teams that were any good? Here is what I found:

In Big Ten (which was "loaded" with great qb's)
9th in completions, attempts, comp. percentage, yards, and efficiency rating.

10th in yards per attempt and Td's.

But he was 4th in one category: Interceptions!

  • Hopefully this lights a fire in PJ's belly and he gets down to business during the summer. That being said, maybe in BO'B's offense with multiple formations and the right personnel MM might succeed. If we have to dink and dump the ball down the field so be it as long as we can get into the endzone on a regular basis. Maybe it's time for all the skill positions to work that much harder to help MM out. Hopefully, the offensive line comes together like they seem to be and the Redd/Benton show works out like we all hope which will help our passing game. I'm not the biggest MM fan, but if BO'B thinks he's the guy for now then I'm behind him. Sometimes we as fans need to circle the wagons and get behind these young guys. They are 18 to 23 year olds and need our support more than our criticism.

    EWPSU94

  • Personally, I think MM can win against mediocre teams, but not because of him. We have seen his inability to beat above average teams and have seen him lose more games than he's won.

I think back to the bowl game against UF. We should have beaten them easily and he couldn't get it done. Ended good drives with either ints. or terrible misses. I just see us having a ceiling with him. One that doesn't allow us to win more than 8 games. If I am wrong (God I hope so) then great, but his history certainly points one way.

9th in completions, attempts, and yards? 10th in TD's? He didn't even start the first half of the year, genius. And is his yds per attempt on him or the conservative offense?

If you're going to spout the stats, spout the right ones and put them in context. He did not complete less than half his passes and he was not underwater in his TD:INT ratio. His mediocre record speaks for itself. There's no need to embellish it. He's not great, but he's not Rob Bolden 39% comp rate, 2 TD and 7 INT bad either. I'm not saying McGloin is the best quarterback in the Big Ten. I'm saying be fair to the kid.

Now this is the point where everyone downvotes me and shouts "McGloin suck$ @ss!" I get it. Save your time. I admit he's not a good quarterback, but I'll take him over Anthony Morelli any day of the week. At least McGloin won a game in the Shoe. Y'all have some short memories. But what really sticks in my craw is when I see supposed PSU fans outright trashing a kid that puts on the Blue and White. That crap turns my stomach. Those of you outright hoping he fails have no concept of what it means to a Nittany Lion.

Genius, thanks. So you are OK with him, good for you. Here is the last 6 games for your enjoyment. He was pretty much given the reigns over the final 4 which really get bad. But you seem happy with this, so here you go:
    Td's Ints. yards
    Purdue: 8-17 0 1 145
    Northwestern: 17-26 2 0 192
    Illinois: 9-24 0 1 98
    Nebraska: 16-34 0 0 193
    OSU: 10-18 0 1 88
    Wisc: 9-17 1 1 97

    Totals: 69-136 3 4 813

Thank God he played against Northwestern! Looks like regression to me. BTW, of his whopping 8 td's, 3 came against Eastern Michigan.

I don't see any stats from the bowl game on there; was Matt not available for that game?

Congrats to him for sucking the least so far. We are in serious trouble if we have to depend on him and his sorry skills for anything other than handing the ball to someone else.

  • He won't be the starter at the end of the season. Bank on it.

See how much tighter your argument is when you quote real stats?

This has already gone over your head twice, but I'll say it again. Maybe it will sink in this time. I DON'T CLAIM TO THINK MCGLOIN IS A GOOD QUARTERBACK.

It was never about that. It's about being fair to the kid and at least giving him credit where credit is due. He had a mediocre year, but he's entitled to mediocre recognition. Not embellishing his stats to make it look worse than it was. It's about supporting the kid our head coach, who watched all of his quarterbacks play through the spring, thinks is the best quarterback that can help this team win right now. If you have a beef with Matt McGloin, if you think Paul Jones is the answer to winning the Big Ten, take it up with Bill O'Brien, because he has a difference of opinion with you. Matt McGloin is not the one the dropped a turd in your punch bowl today.

No. He missed the bowl game thanks to Curtis Drake going all UFC on him in the lockeroom.

You seem to miss the fact the Drake was trying to apologize and MM swung first.

C'mon, really? I knew this was going to get spun into me thinking McGloin is awesome.

From what I read and heard, they had an argument on the field and it spilled into the lockeroom. They were jawing back and forth and Drake cold cocked him. Sounds like they were both idiots, but Drake more so.

That's not the version I recall. But it doesn't matter. I never said McGloin was a nice guy or that he's a good quarterback. But try to give him his due and it gets spun that way I guess.

What "due"? Respect is earned. If all he did was suck no one would care. Or don't you know what being a Nittany Lion is all about?

No it started on the practice field and Drake approached him to apologize and MM swung at him and then Drake ended it.

Then I stand corrected. I see the mob from the other thread is starting to assemble their torches and pitchforks for this one, so I'm done here.

McGloin sucks. And he's an awful person. The End. Y'all can go back to hating on your players. This board was fun while it lasted.

  • How about we give the kid a chance after he is able to get coached by a real QB coach, get the majority of snaps in practice, & not have to worry about getting taken out after a mistake he makes. Plus, shorter throws to receivers in space is the expected offense. Rather than throws to the sideline so our WR can go out of bounds. Dont be surpried if we are undefeated after OSU game, McGloin is the top rated QB in the Big 10 & everyone is calling BoB a genuis. Mark it down.
