McGloin Critic, Here to Eat Some Crow

  • Hmm - all of a sudden we have a QB playing well , improving from week to week and not making the same mistakes twice. I wonder.. could it be....nah, that would be crazy.......

    Jay was a heckuva coach....

I would never ask you to humble yourself, but I frankly never understood the angry divide over McGloin and (name your favorite departed QB). I always saw MM as a less physically talented kid, while OTOH someone who was a better leader with a higher football IQ. Kudos to B'OB and company for coaching up MM this season. He's performing far beyond my expectations.

I don't know MM but from what I have seen, I haven't come to the conclusion that he is particularly high on the leadership or high football IQ scale. IQ above Morelli and Bolden, for sure, but that would be a pretty low bar we've set. Leadership? He is the starting QB and still has a chip on his shoulder so some leadership flows by that position; but real, natural leadership? Not really. A fifth year senior with high profile failures such as fighting in locker room with WRs, not being in front at press conferences following the sanctions, pointing his #1 finger in the air after touchdowns; and a host of other small things make him below average in that category. I agree that he is less physically talented than most D1 QBs though and that will start showing itself more obviously as we get in to the tougher part of our schedule. Over the last couple years, as happens with most QBs, he played well against weak defenses early in the year and got worse as the season progressed and the defenses got better. Same is likely to happen this year and it won't be a "regression."

Bottom line is that he is not a good QB or leader, but he is apparently the best option we have right now. BOB is giving him a chance to be successful and I'll keep cheering for him because he is wearing Blue and White. Just not ready to fabricate some big change in him.

First, that wasn't the tenor of your original post, to which I was responding. Glad you amended the "sensational" nonsense; if he was truly this "leader" and "sensational", we'd be undefeated, period.

Second, he deserves credit for improved decision making and limiting mistakes thusfar (though it's fair to say he regressed yesterday), but this idea that when anything goes well he gets credit and whatever goes wrong is not his fault is tiring and ridiculous. Why did we have to attempt all those field goals? Why was our D in a position to give up one good drive and a lucky play and have Ohio outscore us? Our 5th year senior QB played no role in our offense's inability to convert? Matt's ineffectiveness played a role in that as much as anyone else on offense. Again, credit to him for playing pretty darn well so far, but we've seen this movie before, and it's ok to hold him accountable for his role in our successes and failures without feeling guilty about it or having twenty fanboys come rushing to his defense whenever someone points out these facts.

Ok once was bad enough...but you are seriously trying to lay the losses on MM? I watched different games as I blame his play for neither

  • McGloin's improvement is huge for the present and the future. If McGloin statistically played as he did last year then it would have been said that BOB's success is due to Brady being Brady.

Having statistical verification will go a long way to keeping Hack and future QB's.

Very true. McGloin is a "leader" when times are going good, especially for him. It's his history. When things are going well, he is front and center, playing to the crowd, sticking up fingers for his TD pass accomplishments, etc... Otherwise, he usually is sitting alone on the bench or blaming others when things go bad. It is what it is.

Not taking anything away from his improved play this year thus far, but he is not a leader by the definition most of us want it to be.

With regards to his play.....this weekend showed what I have been fearing. Once he plays teams that force him into tougher throws and decisions, he will not be as successful. We will not win games because of him from here on out. Hopefully he can just not make major mistakes. But we cannot afford misses like he had the other day against the better teams. We won't hang in against those teams with some of his bad throws and sacks.

  • So many people just don't like mcgloin.

And those of you saying "see? Faced a big ten defense and he didn't do well. " should re watch that game. He was off early and it had nothing to do with what Illinois was doing. He was just off. He made a lot of good reads, it's just his passes were missing the mark. had nothing to do with the defense whatsoever.

And in the end he still threw for what, 211 with a 60% completion rate? I think nearly every team in the big ten, with one or two exceptions, would gladly take mm as their qb.

Is he flawed? Yes. Did he get in a fight with a teammate stupidly? Yes. Does he act up on the field sometimes? Yes.

But he's playing at a great level right now and is making our offense look downright fun and downright good! So why not just enjoy it?

I never said he hasn't played well. I said the same signs are still there that have been there in previous years. Ability to become to confident about his own success and the inability to perform when pressured.
