McGloin Critic, Here to Eat Some Crow

  • Hello, my name is Mark, and I was once a McGloin Hater........................................ I was ashamed to say it in public because he was from my home town, and I feared public ridicule and scorn, but now I'm ready to come out and tell the group, that yes, I hated, and I did it more than once. I started out hating behind closed doors, only hating amongst my family and friends, but it soon grew to be much more than this. I found myself hating at work and at public functions. I knew it had become a problem when I found myself hating on a public message board. It was then I realized I couldn't hide behind a screen name anymore. I needed to face my critics openly.

Well, today, as an admitted critic/hater, I am here to eat some crow. Feel free to serve me up a big plate of it too!

McGloin has been sensational this season. It is amazing to wittness the transformation that is taking place right before our very eyes. He is making smart decisions with the football, something I never thought I'd be able to say about him. I was always a critic of his arm strength too, but honeslty, even that has improved. His mobility inside and outside the pocket are quite possibly what has surprised me the most. McGloin was never known to be the most nimble guy in the world, but he has shown so far this season that he has enough ellusiveness to evade the pass rush, step up, or vacate the pocket, while still keeping his eyes down field, and deliver an accurate ball(again, something else I never thought I'd say). Aside from his play on the field, he has also become a leader on this team. It made me proud to hear that he has stepped up in team meetings, to challenge the coach who was publically seen having a "war of the F-Bombs" on national television with the greatest quarterback in the NFL today. This really says a lot about Matt's confidence and character(in the past I would have used the word cockiness).

His improvement can not be mentioned without acknowledging the coaching that he's received from the staff. We all used to wonder what it would be like if we had an offensive staff that could actually develop a QB. Well, now it appears we do, and a huge shout-out goes to O'Brien and staff for making Matt the quarterback he is today.

On the season McGloin is 101/170(60% completion percentage) for 1217 yards and 10 TD's vs just 2 INT's. He has also added another 4 rushing TD's, and has been sacked just 5 times. To put this into perspective, the top season by a PSU quarterback was in 2009, when Daryll Clark was 232/381(60.9%) for 3003 yards with 24 TD's vs 10 INT's. He added another 7 rushing TD's. McGloin has another 7 games to eclipse the single season passing yards mark of 3003. If he averages 255 yards per game, he could break Clark's mark for passing yards in a season(Clark set his record in 13 games, while McGloin will have only 12). Currently he is on pace to throw for 25 TD's, and add 7-8 on the ground. With a little bit of magic, Matt could see his single season touchdown total rise to over 30.

And who would have thought it; all this from a walk-on from Scranton who most(including myself) thought would never see the field the day he stepped on campus.

For anyone who's wondering, I like my crow medium-rare.

  • Not ready to call him sensational yet... Let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's very much improved. Happy with progress, but sensational is quite a stretch. I'm coming around on him too.

  • I think the best part of yesterday's game re: McGloin is that he didn't play his best, but did not cost us the game. He has learned to take what the defense gives him on most occasions.

  • And so it begins...If he was "sensational", we'd be 5-0. He's been much improved, but played pretty poorly overall yesterday and left a lot of points on the field, stalling drives and missing easy open receivers. The best part is that we won, in convincing fashion. He hasn't been asked to do too much (he can't carry the team, otherwise again we'd be undefeated), but it's good to see that he can manage a game well against poor competition. That is an improvement of sorts. He isn't sensational or a team leader. That would be Mr. Mauti.

    NavyNittany

  • He has not been sensational. He has improved quite a bit - anyone should see that. But he is kinda' like Donovan McNabb in that his numbers look good, but it's the lost opportunities that keep him from being truly great (or sensational as you put it). One thing he has done is to limit his mistakes. He still has them, but he has reduced his bad decisions. But he has yet to play a really good defense.... let's hope this trend continues deeper into conference play...

  • I would never ask you to humble yourself, but I frankly never understood the angry divide over McGloin and (name your favorite departed QB). I always saw MM as a less physically talented kid, while OTOH someone who was a better leader with a higher football IQ. Kudos to B'OB and company for coaching up MM this season. He's performing far beyond my expectations.

I agree. His timimg and accurary were actually pretty bad yesterday early on, but it didn't bite him like it easily could have. He was tossing the ball behind WR's as well as bouncing it to them. Part of that is the thing attached to his right shoulder isn't a cannon and most get that. The offense as a whole is better as the staff is taking what is there and creating oppurtunities for the QB to succeed. He isn't sensational, he is doing enough not to turn the ball over against very average defenses and is playing with some fire. Most also know there are rough days ahead for him as the meat of the schedule is just about upon us. He will make bad decisions, he will get picked, but hopefully he limits those negative plays. If he does that, this team could find 4 more wins somewhere hopefully. He is the best PSU has and is a fighter....to much so sometimes, but we don't have any other dice to roll. I just hope they keep it going right now.

haha, maybe sensational was a poor choice of words. I should have said, "the transformation he has made is nothing short of sensational". Reguardless, I was harsh on him, so I really felt the need to prop him up a bit on my part.

That's better. Lol. Major transformation. The MM of old would never come o the line read a defense and make the appropriate calls.

McGloin was only average yesterday yet we still scored 35 points on the road against a B10 team. That's a well coached offense if you ask me.

McGloin is playing the way you would expect an experienced fifth year senior QB to play. And BOB and Fisher have designed an offense and tailored the play calling in a way that allows McGloin to play within himself and play to his strength.

Not to be new-era... I would hope my 5th year starter (hack) will be much better than this. Just too inconsistent with the throws. I'm not a MM hater by any means, I'm thrilled with how far he's come. I'm still worried. I know we beat a b10 team on the road, but Ill is weak. I watched a lot of games yesterday and am shocked at how fast other teams and how their QB throws all over the field. I hope we can match talent of some better teams.

Imagine that! A real coaching staff that gets the most out of its offensive players!

They see what they have with him and give him a limited framework in which to work, and hope that he limits his mistakes (so far he has). Good for them, him, and us.

  • Can't wait to see what BOB can do with a guy like Hackenburg. Hard to seem him decomitting after McGloin's season so far.

All you can ask of your QB is to put the team in a position to win games, and McGloin has done that so far this season. #1, he has limited his turnovers. It was not his fault we gave up a 90 yard drive to Ohio, and it's not his fault our kicker missed 3 makeable field goals and an extra point.

I would imagine it will open things up for BOB downfield as well. There will be bumps in the road as he will be young and not in his 5th year, but it may be easier to break bad habits with a 18 year old frosh versus a 22 year old 5th year senior.

Two of his picks should have been catches. For each bad pass he has thrown a receiver has had a drop to match it, so the 60% rate is very good. That just goes to show you how well our offensive coaches are at identifying the best matchups and coaching MM to find them. I wish Bench would have gotten some reps in the 4th quarter yesterday so we could see how he is coming along as well.

First, that wasn't the tenor of your original post, to which I was responding. Glad you amended the "sensational" nonsense; if he was truly this "leader" and "sensational", we'd be undefeated, period.

Second, he deserves credit for improved decision making and limiting mistakes thusfar (though it's fair to say he regressed yesterday), but this idea that when anything goes well he gets credit and whatever goes wrong is not his fault is tiring and ridiculous. Why did we have to attempt all those field goals? Why was our D in a position to give up one good drive and a lucky play and have Ohio outscore us? Our 5th year senior QB played no role in our offense's inability to convert? Matt's ineffectiveness played a role in that as much as anyone else on offense. Again, credit to him for playing pretty darn well so far, but we've seen this movie before, and it's ok to hold him accountable for his role in our successes and failures without feeling guilty about it or having twenty fanboys come rushing to his defense whenever someone points out these facts.

    NavyNittany

  • I think MM will be as good as our running game is. If we have a good running game, he'll do well with play action, short passes, screens, etc. Yesterday, Illinois sold out to stop the run and short passing game. It wasn't until ZZ started running the ball that the passing game opened up a little more. Even Jack Ham said yesterday that Illinois' pass coverage (rush 3; drop back 8) was giving MM a problem.

    Rick81

  • So defensive leaders get a pass if they are popular, but if you don't like the kid you can say he isn't a leader. The final drive against UVa for him was a damn good one. If our defensive leaders were great they don't let Ohio march up and down on the field and convert something like 9 of 10 3rd down conversions, but its not fair to point out facts both ways I guess. MM will make more mistakes this year and will have bad games. ALL QB's have that and it tends to happen against tougher opponents. Yes OSU will shut down PSU's offense a hell of a lot more than Ill or Navy...go figure. It's one thing to say you are using facts, but it's another to ask for some balance. The fanboy comment is for anyone that doesn't dislike MM the person like you do. He speaks out to much, is overcondifent, but has stuck by the school and done some good things in his time. Hopefully he continues to grow on and off the field, but this personal crap you are wrapped up in with him is borderline high school crap.

I like all of the "leaders" on this team as I think anyone that stayed is a leader. Then again I don't hate one kid more than the rest of them.

What a perfect response. If you can't score, I guess you just move the goalposts....this thread is about your boy McGloin, is it not? If you'd like to discuss the shortcomings of our defense the first 2 weeks, there are plenty, but I would think that's a different topic than this thread, no? Maybe you can interject it into the Mauti for Heisman consideration thread that was here last week (oh wait, that was for McGloin).

No, I do not personally like Matt McGloin, have never hid that, and don't understand why anyone does. When Mike Mauti holds up the number of interceptions or sacks he has after he makes one, or yells at others when he is out of position or makes a mistake, or fails to join the rest of the team he supposedly leads for a singing of Navy Blue and Gold, I'll begin to question people calling him a leader (these are examples from the last 2 weeks. I can continue if you'd like).

I'm not sure if you're hungover or something but this is a pretty weak effort from you. Your edits aren't helping your cause either.

I didn't move any goalposts...just pointed out you have two separate sets of rules. Mauti sometimes overracts on big plays, but I don't mind it as it's a part of the game now. I work with a TON of people from Mandeville and always update them on Mauti's game. Hate on MM all you want to as to me it's beyond childish. I can see the kids in college maybe holding on to some juvenile grudge, but I'm close to 20 years his senior. I know plenty of people who were richards at that age and turned it around as they matured. I also know a few that never did...such is life. Continue all you want to on disliking a college kid as that is on you. I guess he somehow impacts your life. I know PSU and every other school isn't full of 100 perfect kids, but since this kid is under your microscope...keep on hatin. It's comical to me at this point. Don't worry, he'll have a bad game soon enough and you can come and tell everyone you knew it was coming.

No hangover, plenty of family time yesterday, but thanks for another juvenile weak shot. I don't expect much more from you though.

You fail to address and talk past every point I made, as is your way and wont. Let's just say it's an understatement to call McGloin and Mauti's behavior apples-to-oranges, but you're right, it's about my double standard all of a sudden (goalpost moved). It's funny how you mention how old you are and how immature I am, and then proceed to type the adult version of "I know you are but what am I"; well played.

My last point was not a shot at you at all, it was a shot at your post, which was unusually weak. But you're right, it's a beautiful day and refuting your nonsense isn't worth my time today.

When have I EVER suggested this? I have been one of his toughest critics.

Point is, MM has done what he was asked to do, and has given his team a chance to win each and every week, and in doing so, he has played pretty damn well. The lack of a running game and a poor kicking performance by Ficken doomed us against Illinois, and you know the story of the Ohio game, so no need to even go there.
