Can understand your thoughts, and generally agree.
One thing I noticed a few games ago (against OSU?) is that he does the fake leg pump, but it is no longer effective. Teams have caught on to that, and it's obviously a fake when a player is running between McGloin and the center. So they refuse to show their hand on that fake.
To me, I think that's why McGloin has not done as well reading defenses. They aren't showing their blitzes until he actually snaps the ball. JMO, but he needs to mix up the snap counts. It's one reason we really are effective at the NASCAR offense when it gets going.
Will say that I disagree with #1. A lot of QB's - including ones that I'd certainly label as mature - hang their heads after poor plays like INT's. I have no gripe with McGloin about that sort of ting.

I know that he has worked hard. I know he has put in a ton of hours and has committed to improving himself as a QB, and I can respect that. However,
1) It still blows my mind that a 5th year senior hangs their head the way he does when things are not going well. I see it after INTs, negative plays, and especially after dropped passes. For somebody who has been dubbed the leader of the offense, it blows my mind that he can show such negative body language on the field. I understand he's frustrated, because we're all frustrated, but as the (RS) SR QB that kind of immature reaction is disappointing. I don't like McGloin as a person at all, and I've said as much on here plenty of times, but I wouldn't mind him as a QB if he would cut this crap out.
2) CALL A HOT READ. We've gotten destroyed by blitzes the past three games, including Purdue. He and the team didn't play well at all against Purdue IMO, and were up big simply because of a gulf in talent and that staff's ineptitude. He is in his first year of the system, and I understand BOB's playbook is very complex, but in his third season seeing legitimate playing time I 'd expect him to know what a blitz looks like. Coaches could help him out a little more with the playcalling, but as the QB he has to help the OL a little bit more pre-snap.
3) He seems to have this weird knack for only throwing INTs when the game is getting into crunch time, and at the worst possible time for our team. Its not intentional, but it is strange how he seems to only throw INTs on important drives.
4) Is it just me, or does McGloin play his worst in big games? I knew this was the case the past two years where he tore up the bad defenses, but this season its still there. He didn't play that well against OSU, and his second half against Nebraska was very disappointing. Seeing as those were our two biggest games this season outside of maybe Wisconsin, it reinforces to me that McGloin just isn't a big game QB. Some guys have "it", he doesn't. Which is weird, because the one thing he seems to have is "it" in all the other games, just not in the big games.
Just some frustrated thoughts.

You've complained about the kid for three years now on this board. He's a former walk-on with no scholarship offers and limited talent, yet he found a way to beat out three 4 star recruits. The kid has given his heart and soul to the program for five years. Enough is enough already. We get it, you don't like him. You've spent the past three years destroying him when he's made mistakes and downplaying his accomplishments when he's done well. What is the point of this thread? Just another opportunity to bash him and make yourself feel better?
Guess what, when you have limited talent and ability, you are going to make mistakes. It's not shocking. He's come a long way. Some don't like his demeanor and that's fine. That's who he is though. What people like you need to realize is that mindset and attitude is what has allowed him to get to where he is and have the success he's had. It is who he is and I have no problem with it. I don't agree with all his actions, but I understand where he is coming from. The kid has two games left in his career. It's about time you appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears he's put into this program for five years.

He's solid and has improved dramatically this year.
But that doesn't mean Tex is wrong. Except for the hanging head thing, there's a difference between Mac and Cutler lol

I don't think Texas is totally wrong, but the myth that good QB's don't have bad days or get pissed is just plain silly. We are all PSU fans so he is under our microscope, but this QB that makes the right read 100% of the time, never loses a game, throws a pick, and is the perfect choir boy is beyond foolish. It comes off like a child finding out that there is no Santa Claus. It's a myth. You can watch any pro game and see incredible QB's get confused by a D and make bad throws. Guess what, it's usually against the better defenses and teams. You can see QB's throw tantrums from time to time and including the best of the best at QB. He's not wrong, but his thinking this is isolated to MM is a bit naive IMO. Nobody in their right mind was thinking he would be playing at this level IMO...and kudos to him and staff for working to get there. Bottom line is if a QB wins, he tends to get a free pass from his fans. College or PRO...that is the simple truth.

O'Brien can only do so much in the short amount of time he has been here.
Just look at the improvements McGloin HAS made.
Now, just imagine what its going to be like when our QB's get 2-4 years of coaching from OB.

MM was never some peoples first choice whether it was his arm or him being a RICHARD at a fast food line....that is where some still have a hang up with him IMO. He stuck with PSU during the worst time in the schools history and has given a few of us something to smile about for a few weeks. That is how I'll remember this year for him and I hope he grows up as the years pass by as is the case for most of us.

I'll admit I personally find him much, much harder to root for because of his off the field antics, but my post was more about his play this season than him as a person.
The biggest games are against the best defenses, but what I'm frustrated with is that McGloin just doesn't seem as sharp. I know good defenses make it harder to do your job, and I know the DCs do a better job of confusing him, but it is frustrating that he can be so inconsistent. Regardless of whether or not you're playing OSU or Nebraska, a throw into double coverage in the endzone is a bad idea and a bad decision. Holding onto the ball for four to five seconds on numerous plays is a bad idea. I'm not trying to take away from what has been a great season for him (numbers speak for themselves), but it is frustrating that a trend has developed for PSU in games like these, where the QB makes some poor decisions (tries to force things, make the hero play in the pocket, hold onto the ball too long) and we end up paying for it.
And you're right, if we won yesterday I wouldn't have posted this topic. But we didn't, and I'm pissed. I did wait two days to post it so I could try and cool down, but I'm still pretty fired up and angry.

I haven't been on this board for three years, somewhere just under two. I think its great that McGloin has gotten the opportunity to play D1A football, and think its even better for him that he has been able to see significant PT and earn the starting role in his time here because of his hard work. He has something that he can hang his hat on forever, that he was a relatively successful starting QB at a major college football program. That's awesome.
However just because he isn't as physically gifted, or didn't earn a scholarship out of high school, doesn't mean I won't be critical of a QB's play. I made this thread to start a discussion about why these things are happening, and what could be done to fix it.
On a side note, if you think I'm tough on McGloin, you should see my rants about Landry Jones.

He didn't force the ball over and over again. He moved the team enough to put up 30+ on the road. Don't forget ZZ's fumble inside the 3 in addition to the bad call. I think the defense not handling the toss was a bigger reason for this loss than the QB play overall. PSU gave up over 250 on the ground and they were still in postion to win it. 3 turnovers cost PSU that game in addition horrible call. One was MM's fault, one was a phanton BS call on Lehman's TD, and one was the RB not protecting the ball. All 3 hurt the team pretty bad, but if you give up 250+ on the ground, it's hard to overcome most of that. His feet and play this season have extended tons of drives and he is moving up in the pocket in order to make plays. I'm pissed about this loss, but I'm not pinning this one on the QB or most of it...not even close. Again, you show me this QB of yours that doesn't do exactly what you stated from time to time and I'll quiet down...but I know that QB isn't currently playing on this planet.

Do you not remember Anthony Morelli?? Hell, even Clark struggled against good teams. Most quarterbacks are not going to play great against good defenses. That's not just a McGloin thing or a Penn State thing, it happens everywhere. I'm not sure what you're expecting.

I could care less about your rants on Landry Jones and I don't have a problem with you being critical of McGloin's play. The point is because you don't like him personally (which is fine) you tend to go way overboard with your assessments and criticisms of him. If you liked McGloin as a person, your assessment of him as a QB would be different.

Didn't follow PSU football until I enrolled here, which was twenty-seven months ago.
From the sounds of things, it doesn't sound like I want to though. I went out of my way to watch some of Zach Mills to see how bad the dark years were and to see if he really was that good of a QB. Went out of my way to watch MRob. I remember watching Clark in the LSU bowl game, and from a few games I saw my senior year of HS. I didn't watch much of 2008 because I was caught up in OU's championship run, but I did see the USC game.
I'm expecting a QB to minimize these mistakes that shouldn't be happening at this point in the season. The hot read thing has been consistent for a few weeks, and its frustrating to watch. I don't like watching sloppy football, and IMO that's what we have played at times the past few weeks. I'm not blaming it all on McGloin, not even most of it. I am pointing out things that I have found frustrating the past few weeks.
