A year away from home helped prepare defensive back Jordan Lucas for Penn State on and off the field.

  • Hope Lucas is ready because he is going to be asked to contribute from day one.

  • One of my favorite prospects of the 2012 class.
I wouldn't be surprised if he starts at safety by the end if the year.

  • He has a real good shot at playing NB. Amos/Morris at CB. Willis/SOA at safety. He and Davis (Golden & Williams too) better be ready because they are playing.

  • Canaan severin, there's a name I haven't heard in a while.. Wonder how his career will turn out, he seemed too big to be a wr but too small for TE.. Guess we'll find out when he makes the trip back to happy valley next year

You must have forgot to mention the walk-on kids. Fagnano, Buckley, and Della Valle will all play in the secondary this season. Keiser will play also, if he is healthy.
Gosh, we have a former walk-on starting QB. Recently a walk-on NFL LB (Hull). Also, Van Fleet would see PT this season is he was healthy.

    The walk-ons deserve more respect!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I respect the walk ons for wht they do that no one sees with all the grunt work. The fact that so many are playing isn't good. At all. Its a huge mistake by the past staff.

DB is "wide open" this season. I don't see a big division of ability. The prior ship kids, the walk-ons and true Freshmen will all be given fair opportunity by our new coaching staff. Toughness and tackling ability will be paramount.

I think a lot of fans will be very surprised who ends up with most of the PT.

  • The question here is kinda like the folks that ask whether we can run a succesful 3-4 front on D. Roof wants to be able to run a press coverage. But you have to have the right athletes to do it with. Our best shot at press athletes was with Morris, Drake, and Thomas at the corner.

With the departures, we likely see Amos sticking at the thin CB spot. He'd be best as a safety. He played well in the zone coverage at CB, but probably doesn't have the press skills you want to do that full time.

When you look at the options at CB and S, you have to think we'll be trying to change coverages often to confuse the offense and not let coordinators lock into a scheme on us. I expect a lot of different zone schemes and some press schemes. Turning up the pressure might be Roof's goal, but being realistic, it isn't something this group can sustain. But it will be fun to watch.

What isn't fun to watch? A shellacking like Illinois in 2010, where we were beaten like a team full of gingers and continued to line up in the same scheme. We might not be ready for a press D, but I doubt we sit on our hands and take it like that again.

And the fact that it is wide open and we may be surprised who gets the most PT this year, is exactly my point. That isn't good.

Amos is absolutely fantastic in press coverage.
Did you forget how he absolutely destroyed Marvin McNutt, the unquestioned strongest B1G WR last year, in just his first career start?
We will absolutely be able to run press against base 2WR sets. It's the nickel and beyond where that becomes a problem. But regardless of whether Drake and Thomas were here or not, Amos is the best press CB we've had in years - that is no exaggeration.

OK OK ..............I don't think the situation is "good" either!

I just remember some really bad tackling in The Spring Game. But, I will admit, coverage is paramount also. Shucks, EVERYTHING about the 2012 secondary is going to be important. I don't think I can every remember a multi player position (DB) being so unknown.
This season is sure to be INTERESTING, if nothing else.
