Matt McGloin teleconference notes...

  • Here are the notes from Matt McGloin's teleconference on Wednesday morning:

    - We don't have any type of different view coming into this game. They played Iowa tough, everyone has games like they had last week, just look at our second half last week.

    - Having Monday off was more about getting our minds back together. They came back and had a good, long, strong practice. The day off really helped.

    - 'I don't think so' when asked if he thought there was any doubt that he would be the starter this week.

    - The mood in practice on Tuesday was great. We've forgotten about Ohio State. Indiana has been up and down. They can't come out slowly, or it could be a long day for us.

    - The first half last week let them know that they could play with Ohio State, and the second half showed how bad they could be at times. It just shows you that they have to play 60 minutes, but they know they can play with everybody.

    - We got ourselves into too many 3rd and long situations. In the second half, it seems as if we couldn't get going. We lost the time of possession. Those are the situations we need to keep ourselves out of.

    - You have to be prepared each and every day knowing that you're getting the start Saturday. You have to keep everybody up and try to focus on the task at hand. You know you've got a tough game this week.

    - Getting the start was something that I knew I was capable of. Everybody has started to realize that this is my team and I'm going to go out there and get the job done.

    - Justin Brown is a great football player, he's a young guy and he was definitely open a lot on Saturday, that's why I threw to him.

    - I think everybody feels that they need to prove themselves. Everybody works hard every day to get better and as a team they're trying to prove that they're going to play as good as anyone else.

    - Derek Moye is one of those guys that you have a ton of confidence in. All of our wideouts have great ability, I have the utmost confidence in all of them.

    - I was waiting for people hop off the bandwagon if I had a bad game or something. There's people out there that want to see us lose and do bad, but you can't focus on that. You have to face the adversity and move on, and I think we did that in practice yesterday.

    - Coach McQueary does a great job of mixing our wideouts. Everybody has the capability to play in this offense. They have confidence that guys will make plays.

    - I think we just get too comfortable sometimes. We got up big on Ohio State and we got a little too comfortable trying to run the clock out. We tried playing not to lose. That's tough to win like that. Coming into this weekend, they can't have a slow start.

    - The loss was a tough pill to swallow, but it's something they can use as a learning experience. They play at Ohio State again next year, and he's got a big red circle around that date. It's something they have to move on.

    - It was a number of things that went wrong. Everybody got too comfortable. Ohio State went in and made big time changes at halftime. I don't think we were ready for it as a team.

    - That wasn't a coverage that we had seen from them on film. They made some adjustments and made some good plans. That's what good football teams do.

    - We may be young, but a lot of guys have a lot of playing time and know what to expect. Nobody is too young anymore. I don't think we can use not a lot of experience as an excuse.

    - There's a lot of good and a lot of bad for everybody in the Ohio State. In the first half, we were clicking. In the second half, we put the ball in their hands and you can't do that with the playmakers they have.

    - To clarify earlier, he said that there were people out there that didn't want them to win so they could hop off the bandwagon. Now we see who the true fans are and how they'll support the team.

    - He believes that Royster, Green and Redd will be available. They practiced yesterday, hopefully they'll be available.

  • is anyone else rubbed the wrong way by mcgloin's comments and antics (e.g. taunting osu)

mcgloin gets a chance in the nw game because bolden had a few subpar plays, even though bolden managed to drive the team down the field. mcgloin plays great in the 2nd half of the nw game, after multiple bad series of his own in the 1st half. mcgloin calls out his teammate....stating he played bad.

mcgloin & psu have a good first half against osu but then mcgloin has the worst half of college football qb'ing i've ever seen, leading to the loss. and his reaction to that in this teleconference is no mention of how he made bad plays. no personal responsibility for the loss, which there should have been considering his horrible play in the 2nd half. all the negative statements are "we....." and there were multiple insinuations that the playcalling/coaching was bad.

and then this: "Everybody has started to realize that this is my team and I'm going to go out there and get the job done." huh? get the job done like 2-12 with 0 tds and 2 ints, or whatever he was in the 2nd half? there is a fine line between moxie and arrogance.

When I think back on the OSU game and how I felt.

In the first half I was thinking, "I didnt even know we could do this"....meaning we played better than I thought we could.

In the second half I was thinking, "I hoped we didnt play like this" ...meaning exactly what I just said.

Really was a tail of two halfs, and showed we still have plenty of work to do. First half is where we need to be all the time. Second half is what we have to avoid all the time.

  • Completely agreed: thin line between confident and arrogant. The other thing that rubbed me the wrong way was calling out fans who are on his bandwagon or jumping off his bandwagon. It wasn't the fan who decided that Rob Bolden, a true freshmen who has been on campus for mere weeks, deserved to start the season over you (with your three years on campus and the play book). Rob was playing really well in the Minnesota game before he got a concussion, and you beat Minnesota, Michigan and NW--not powerhouses or great defenses. Bolden had to play Alabama, Iowa and yes, Temple is better than Minnesota and Michigan. If he didn't get injured, you would not be playing today, and he would have shredded those paltry defenses as well. So why don't you jump off your own bandwagon for a little and learn some humility. P.S. Bolden is still the better QB and he should be starting, especially since it's agreed that he is the future of the program. Otherwise, why waste his red-shirt.

I think he just means it was "big" considering the circumstances. No one expected them to even have a lead of that nature, I know I didn't. I agree it wasn't a "huge" lead like his statement hints at.

  • Not a fan of McGloin at all, in fact, there's never been a PSU football player I've ever disliked more, and to be honest, I don't really know why. Like a lot of other people on this board he just rubs me the wrong way too. From the look he gave to the OSU sideline after his first TD to Brown, there were rumors he was trash talking the OSU fans behind the PSU sideline, calling out Herbstreit, comments above etc etc.... kid just gets on my nerves.
Now, having said that, I can't deny that he gives (maybe gave) this team a spark and a little fire in their belly's against NW and Michigan and got the team off it's knees a little, something they lacked considerably earlier in the season. He did play the weakest defenses on our schedule (barring OSU) and that helped pad his stats a little too. Bolden has a heaping ton more upside and natural ablility, and I'm sure this will be his team again next year once he learns the position better, but for now, for the team, we have to support this guy, because he is our starting QB, wether we like it or NOT.

I think we can all agree it will be either Bolden or Jones

  • you can tell the out of touch folks here...

yea he is cocky look at the top QBs in the NFL or CFB

High energy, high emotions, and cocky that is the hallmark of a player people will play for

    Tebow taunted

    Brady spiked it

Manning yells like a mad man

Sorry guys but if you want to win you want Mcgloin's mindset

I don't mind his "mindset" at all and agree with you on that, you have to have an air of confidence playing this game, a little "swagger". But keep it within the team, Manning yells at his own players on the line or in the huddle, Tebow from what I can remember, never taunted the other sideline or their fans behind his own bench, and Tom Brady, like Manning, maybe at his own team, but I can't say I've seen him taunt, especially after his first TD throw in a game in which they're 3 TD dogs.
I'm all for being confident and having a swagger, people like others to show emotion, energy and passion, and others will generally follow that person; BUT, there is a fine line between confident and arrogant and when to exhibit both. Many feel McGloin has crossed the line without due cause.

  • the people who do are older than 40 and not people who lead young people

Why do you think McGloin is loved by the team? Cause that is how he is.. That is what it takes to lead your peers. BTW get used to this as PSU removes Joe McGloin will become the common mindset for PSU. Which is awesome.
