Maryland to the B1G and recruiting

  • Just had a thought. A good one? Not sure. But, we know LJ loves doing work around the Maryland/DC area recruiting wise. With Maryland's move to the B1G, does anyone think we may become less effective in recruiting these areas? I know we do have a superior staff to Maryland, and LJ is LJ, but I would have to think some recruits (and maybe the top ones) will have interest in staying in-state while still competing in the B1G. Don't know if I'm the only one who has that thought. Anyone else?

i see that point and the point about more big ten schools having a crack at the prospects - but i think it is great for us. Gets us more into the homes and on TV of MD and DC

  • Just becuase they will be the bottom rung team of the B1G doesn't mean it they will take a chunk of our recruits in the area. It's still Maryland whether they are in the B1G or where ever.

  • I don't see it making a difference, really, for PSU.

Does Indiana or Purdue beat out Notre Dame for recruits in Indiana?

    Sometimes, yes.

This will impact PSU recruiting for sure. Assuming rRutgers joins as well, two of our hotbed areas (NJ and MD/DC/VA) are now B10 schools. We no longer can pitch those kids on playing in the better conference with more attention, better match up's, bigger stadiums, more tradition, etc. They can stay closer to home and still play at OSU, PSU, Michigan. And we have seen several 4/5 star guys the past few years who staying close to home was a consideration due to family considerations.

We can't sell them on a bigger stadium? More tradition? What the heck are you smoking?

Just because they play teams with tradition and bigger stadiums doesn't mean they HAVE more tradition and a bigger stadium.

I really don't think conference makes THAT much of a difference in recruiting. And in the end, being able to play in a better conference should be cancelled out by worse records. Rutgers wouldn't go 9-1 in the Big Ten this year.

But we can sell the fact that (hopefully) we'll be beating UMD and RU head-to-head every year. Plus playing in a bigger stadium in a program with more tradition. On the balance, I think this helps PSU recruiting in NJ and MD.

Other Big Ten schools will try to recruit the area too, but Nebraska, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and to a lesser extent Michigan have long recruiting those areas.

Most people don't think this will factor in, but I agree that it could be a potential story at least with Rutgers. Hey, if bringing MD and Rutgers on board do affect Penn State negatively in any way, all the better for Jim Delaney. Why did this happen so quickly? He knows we could have eyes for the ACC down the line, so what does he do? Traps us in the Big Ten by starting the destruction of the ACC. He'll be very happy about any collateral fallout that affects us.

  • JMO, it might mean some of the more talented kids decide to stay home and play for UMD. We saw it with Diggs, Wes Brown and a few others the last two years. Now, you can't sell a kid a chance to play in the BIG as reason to leave.

I disagree. I think this will help our recruiting immensly. Prior to joining the B1G, PSU played these teams all the time, and for the most part PSU had the pick of the litter in recruiting. The best of the best from NJ and Maryland went to PSU to play on the big stage with the added benefit of being able to play in front of family and friends multiple times a year when PSU would travel to play Maryland or Rutgers or WVU, etc. In addition, the lesser recruits from these areas, which were aften times the former highschool teammates of the stud recruits, went to the likes of Maryland or Rutgers. It was nice for these top end recruits to be able to play against friends and players they played against in high school.

Once PSU joined the B1G, in my opinion, PSU became less of an option for some of these recruits from the NJ, Maryland and greater mid-atlantic region because they would rarly get to play in front of family and friends or against friends. Now, if you are a stud recruit, you can go to PSU were you have the oportunity to play in big time games, perhaps (once the sanctions are over) compete for a B1G or National Championship and be coached by coaches that can get you to the NFL, all while being able to play in NJ or Maryland a couple of times throughout your career in front of friends and family who can't make the weekly trip to State College.

In short, I think this is a step toward returning PSU to the "Beast of the East" as it was know before it became part of a midwestern conference.

Dreading the prospect of Penn State's coverage not breaking through the Mason-Dixon line on the ESPN/ABC TV chart is a thing of the past! Yes, I have BTN but this will be handy when in Maryland and not at home for games.

I thinks it would hurt recruiting not even a little bit, but actually enhance our recruiting in that area.

  • It will be interesting to see if Maryland tries to make PSU games big recruiting weekends since it will be essentially a home game for us. I wouldn't be shocked if some of our coaches wouldn't be able to visit recruits during their Friday night games. This will help Maryland recruit second tier players in PA and OH. Might be a factor in-state for some kids. If BOB can pound them every year and fill their stadium with our fans ever other year this will be good for us.

agree 100%, i think putting us on the tv every saturday will help. Recruits will see us more and here about us more in the entire state.

Also i like the fact that they are rumoring Rutgers to the BIG. That would give us the new york and new jersey markets. Thats Ohio, New York, New Jersey and Marylad all bordering states for recruiting.

  • I think its being overstated....

We all were clamoring for the ACC and how it would blow up our recruiting so much better as we recruit in ACC territority, as we'd have more exposure and kids could still go to PSU but could be within driving distance to lots of games for family that live in MD, DC, Va, NC, NJ, etc...

I dont think its going to be much of a difference. I could see with some recruits in MD and RU that it definitely helps us, but could also see the recruits that want to play in a big conference but dont want to leave home staying.

  • The kids that want to stay home will stay home no matter what conference they are in. The addition of Rutgers and MD will help PSU (and OSU, NU, UM) some but nothing huge. Some kids that want Mom and Dad see them play can now play back home at least twice in their career. I dont think this helps RU and UMD a huge amount either with recruiting. Some but not a lot. At the end of the day, Rutgers is still Rutgers and unless they pick up and move UMD out of the area it's in.....

  • The recruiting impact will play out over the years. In the immediate term, the addition of a prominent mid-Atlantic state school strengthens the Big 13.

  • Dave Jones thinks it will hurt our recruiting.

"Now, everything has changed. The parents of all of those kids that LJ used to scoop up can now know that they'll see their kids play against the big boys and can do it staying close to home. And these are the regions where PSU has picked up a lot of its fastest players. Big problem for Penn State, I believe."

Rutgers, Maryland attractive to Big Ten for good reasons

What may seem on the surface a quizzical move has solid foundation in fertile cable markets and athletic talent.

  • Well, on one hand you could say kids in NJ and MD can now stay home and play in the Big Ten, so that's going to hurt us. On the other hand now you can say this gives us a bigger presence in those states, and beating up on the home team year after year will be a good recruiting tool. So let's call it a wash.

Personally, I'm not thrilled with these two teams. I would rather see them get Pitt or Syracuse, or even Oklahoma or Oklahoma State. But I guess it's all about expanding into the DC and NYC markets even though people in those cities could care less about these teams. It's about forcing Comcast to put the BTN on everyone's cable box whether they want it or not.

I think this is better than having Pitt. At least PSU is the only PA school in the Big Ten.

  • As long as PSU keeps beating MD and Rutgers this will help PSU in recruiting those areas. It will also help other B1G schools in those states but not a ton. Probably OSU the most. Overall however I think it is a good move for PSU by adding some local schools and expanding exposure and recruiting. JoePa got what he wanted!

Better for the Big Ten than having Pitt? Yes. Better for recruiting than having Pitt? Sure.

Better for a PSU fan who remembers how awesome the rivalry was in the 80's and 90's? No. I know PSU dominated the series, but it was still a fun game to play for both sides. It's a shame they don't play anymore. Hopefully BOB changes that.
