    p.s. Posters on the board have mentioned that one of the concrete benefits of the CIC is the ability to take courses at other schools if it's not offered at Penn State. I'd rather take classes at some of the ACC schools than the Big 10 schools.

    I'd take classes at the University of Chicago over courses at Duke any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Granted I was an economics major and they are one of the best int he world at it. B1G schools are fantastic research institutions, not saying GaTech aren't. And not even mentioning Northwestern or Michigan Business.

    Jhouck you're drawing different money from different sources and trying to compare them. Its apples and oranges right now. Thats school money. This is conference money that PSU doesn't directly control (contracts and the like). Just doesn't work the way you're thinking. Its a little quirkier than that (which trust me is confusing at first, that isn't a dig at you).

    As for the academics. Those schools belong to an organization (that I can't think of right off the top of my head) but the other B1G schools do too. The CIC is premier at this level (its no Ivy league though). While also making the most money, it is by far the best D1A academic conference. Though many of the PAC12 schools are utterly fantastic as well.

    Also, back to point one. You're forgetting that PSU loses tons of rights to its money by leaving. They can't just leave.

    Google US News undergraduate rankings.

    ACC has more in the top 50 than does B1G.

    B1G "Exit Fee" includes the TV rights buy-back clause and it is heavily onorus on the exiting member.

    Is the contract public record or at least in the media anywhere (not a smartass response, but a serious question)? Otherwise, I think you would have to build from WVU's exit last year, and multiply by minimum 250%, and that was before they settled their reduced price. That would just be a guess though. Money's at a higher stake here and the B1G is commissioned much much better than the Big East ever was.

    Found this article from Forbes (love), pretty interesting. Here's a fun quote:

    "The Big Ten and Pac-12 don’t have a base exit fee, but they also have grants of rights in place that could prove incredibly costly if a school were foolish enough to leave anytime soon."

    Judging by numbers thrown around there, if the Big 12 is throwing around $50m+ in grants plus an exit fee, you bet your ass the B1G has something at least comparable.

    Edit: Stupid me, didn't see page two (or read the article before I could let kc swoop in on me biggrin). They would own our media rights until 2027 (Good Lord) unless we negotiate out of that, with no base exit fee (so def no two tiered agreement). $50m may definitely be on the low side in that whole equation, like the way low side.

    It also has more academic standards to get in. The bottom is higher, so to speak. Nebraska had its AAU membership taken away right before or after it joined. That caused quite a stir, though I believe it was revealed that it was something to do with their medical facilities. That's off hand though.

  • I don't think we're leaving the Big Ten. We should go for 4 schools in the East / Mid Atlantic.

    Would not hurt to have the 4-5 strongest state universities surrounding Washington DC and New York.

    Own MD/VA/PA/NJ - think about how well we'd be able to lobby ......big government, defense, pharma, education, media, and banking.

    My choice - UVA, VT, UMD, Rutgers. I choose taking 2 VA schools (my bet is they're a package) over UConn.

    On the other hand, playing conference games in Storrs & NYC may get people's attention in Bristol.
