Maryland to the B1G?

  • Rumors are starting to float that Maryland may be headed to the B1G. Some are claiming expansion, others are claiming that PSU will be ejected from the B1G.

    I doubt it's true.

If it is the ACC would make this swap every day of the week and twice on sunday

  • LOL... and aliens impregnated Betty White. Read it all while in the grocery check out lane. We still a cash cow for the B10. Would love to jump ship for a conference that values us and wants us, but we are stuck with this conference due to dollars and cents, though we will neither really belong nor be treated fairly/welcomed.

I know we have a thread about it on Bucknuts. I believe a poster said he heard it being discussed on a MD radio show.

    We Are...Penn State!

  • So why would they toss us now, a year after? Pretty ridiculous imo. Can't imagine how much money they would lose switching us with MD.

i honestly don't think that the Big Ten would care to be honest. I think they have enough confidence in their brand that they could wash Penn State away, and replace PSU with just anyone and still make more money than most.

  • If the dolts of the BIG were going to toss us out, they would have already done it. So, UMD would be the replacement for PSU in the people's mind that think PSU is going to get booted. Hey, I'm fine with the ACC - doing a swap, but the BIG would get a shitty football program that no one cares about - which is a major loss. They would be scrambling trying to add that sixth team for hockey, because last I checked UMD doesn't have a team.

BIG would lose tons of money with Maryland instead of PSU. It's pretty evident.

They would have a rude awakening then. As the old saying goes, you never knew what you had until its gone. There is no one that could replace PSU for the BIG at this juncture.

  • Apparently it was reported on a Maryland radio station and it's been talked about on the Maryland board. I can't see everything that is being said but one guy claims to know that they are atleast talking. Some are claiming that it's to kick PSU out but most seem to think it would just be expansion with the B1G also getting a school like UVA or Ga Tech.

Ga. Tech in the BIG. LOL. Exactly, what do they bring except baseball and men's golf? Men's hoops sucks now and football is well - on par with Maryland. Tech doesn't even bring you the Atlanta market.

So, if one guy claims to know they are at least talking, but some are claiming it is to kick PSU out? That is nothing more than uneducated guesses.

Sounds like Tech is the Pitt of the South if they can't carry Atlanta market.

I have been all for adding a couple ACC schools because this conference needs to get somewhere with growing markets. Beggars can't be choosers, and if this conference truly wants to expand, this will be the type of the schools they land due to Delany's utter ineptitude at his expansion attempt a couple years ago.

I'm gonna have to disagree on this one, adding Nebraska was a great addition to the B1G. Great tradition with a VERY loyal fanbase. The B1G wants to adds schools that either move the needle in terms on viewership and exposure or that open up lucrative markets. Nebraska def. moves the needle and short of adding Texas or ND there wasn't a better realistic option to add.

What I said wasn't a knock on Nebraska. When Delany warned other conferences we were expanding, he thought we could buy whoever we wanted. Other conferences (PAC and SEC) solidified and became competitors in the expansion race. ACC schools increased buyouts and now the Big XII has their TV rights locked up.

Nebraska fans are great and so is their football tradition, but the Nebraska market is not exactly Texas. If Delany wouldn't have announced his intentions to the world we could have gotten Nebraska and more.

I think the plan all along was to add 1 school, get a championship game to make more $ and play longer. i don't think Delany was looking for more unless it was ND which I don't think will join a conference till they absolutely have to which I don't see happening any time soon.
