March Madness 2013 Thread

  • Well its that time of year and I figured we could discuss the everything tournament related in here. While Penn State is not in it, I am sure some of you are just College Basketball fans like me.

To start if off, who is your pick at this moment to win the whole thing?

#DicedPineapples I have one upvote left, and I am not afraid to use it!!!

  • Miami right now would be my pick. But the parity this year is absolutely absurd. There have been something like 30 upsets of top 5 teams this year so far. Anyone can beat anyone. I love it.

  • How do you know PSU wont make a run and win the B1G tourney? whistling

If they did I would eat that slop that we feed my dog. Something tells me we don't have to worry about them winning the B1G tourney this year.

  • I am sticking with my Hoosiers. They still have more balance than most.

  • I like the Hoosiers the most. I expect Minnesota and Michigan State to go deep.

Also, Nittany Nation is having a Bracket pool competition again The Oakland Zoo (Pittsburgh's students) and money from that will go towards Penn State's Relay For Life (which is on April 13th & 14th at Medlar)

  • I am sticking with the Hoosiers as well. I just feel like they will lock it down during bracket play. I feel like Miami and Louisville will also make strong runs deep in the tourny. Can't really speak though not until the brackets come out.

  • I was partial to picking what team has the most future nba'ers as that has been pretty successful recently but not this year as they talent is pretty equal plus some of these guys are underachieving.

UK - they still have besides Noel - Goodwin and Pothyress - but they ain't winning anything and may not get in
    IU - Zeller and Oladipo
scUM - Burke, - Hardaway, McGary and Robinson may go but not this year
Duke - Plumlee and maybe Kelly in 2nd
    G-town - Otto Porter
    Kansas - Mclemore and Withey
Louisville - Dengh and maybe Smith
    Florida has couple 2nd rounders
Ok State - Smart and Nash
UNC is hot and has McAdoo and Bullock
NC State probably has three on their roster in Leslie, Brown and Howell but they ain't winning d**k

I'm going with IU vs scUM in the final.

On Ryan Kelly, he is almost a lock for the 2nd with rumors dating back to last year that a team would consider him late 1st due to his height/passing/shooting skills. Also Seth Curry is likely a 2nd round guy again due to shooting.

JMO, if Smart has a hot hand Ok State that team would be the scariest to me...I think they can do some damage.

I also like Gonzaga a lot, they have Olynyk is a 1st round guy and they have some younger talent around them. Pangos also is a solid guard.

Not buying Curry yet as nba'er he can't cover me let alone anybody in the league and his o skills aren't elite enuf to make you forget that. He's had a good year offensively but I'm still not convinced he can make an nba roster.

I'm playing east coast bias guy as well on the zags. they played nobody good the last two months other than St. Mary's - I know its not their fault. they had a couple nice ooc wins against OU, KSU and Ok St. Olynky is real good but Pangos is not an nba player either but just a good college player. Brown is the better prospect and he's marginal.

I agree with Pangos not being an NBAer, but I believe that guard play is #1 indicator of NCAA tourney success and Pangos can do it at the college level. Ok, I understand the East Coast bias, but I like Santa Clara and BYU...and Gonzaga with an RPI rank of 8 is pretty impressive.

On Curry, its a system fit, I could see him being a Gary Neal for a team like Spurts. Most teams, though, he won't be a prospect for. Right now he doesn't have the guard play (next to him) to highlight his absurd shooting skills.

and I will finish so badly for my upteenth consecutive year - it's amazing how much I suck at this but play about ten every year.

    Totally agree on guard play.

I'm embarrassed I've spent so much time on Curry but I don't even think he's in the top 3 sg in the conference. Erick Green at VT is much better nba prospect and has played without any support and I love Joe Harris despite him being just a good college player. Both the guys shoot better % than Curry despite Curry having an all american in Plumlee to create space for him.

Here's my biggest gripes on Curry. He scored 7 and 0 points against Miami - who have athletes on the perimeter. I just think he's not physical or quick enough to get open and/or create his own on the perimeter.

I do like Green a lot more, I could see him being a scoring, backup PG off the bench and a rotation player. I also like Harris. On Curry, I think we will just find out in the future. That said, I also don't think Duke is a contender this year unless Kelly keeps playing out his mind.

  • I'm sure I will change my mind after the conference tourneys, but I think Kansas (unfortunately) is the hottest team at the moment. They got their slump out early and I think they're gonna streak right through the brackets.
