  • Not sure if any of you guys like Mandel or not, but I personally much prefer him and Staples than ESPN. Anyway from his thoughts on the week..

    Poll watching

    My reaction to the latest AP and Coaches' polls:

    Overrated: Arkansas (AP and Coaches': No. 8)

    The Hogs fourth-quarter comebacks the past two weeks to win at 2-6 Ole Miss and 4-4 Vandy. They're ranked this high solely because they play in the SEC West.

    Underrated: Penn State (AP: No. 16; Coaches': No. 15)

    What's the difference between 8-1 Penn State and 7-1 Arkansas, which both suffered their sole loss to No. 2 Alabama? The Nittany Lions win with defense, not offense. Period.

    Well at least somebody appreciates defense.

  • This is 110% correct. We may lose these next three games, but if we would of won these previous games by scores of 45-37 & 38-31 rather than 23-19 & 10-7, we are a Top 12 at the least.

    It would indeed be a surprise because we will HAVE to score in double digits to win two of the three, and by double digits I don't mean 10 points like this past weekend. It will take at least 20-24 points to beat NE and WI, and at least 17 to beat O$U. This also assumes that our defense continues to play as well as it has.

    I dunno 2013, I'm just not buying this team yet. We are extremely lucky to be 8-1 against mediocre teams at best. Hope I'm wrong here and I'll be more than happy to eat some crow.

  • Sometimes teams have everything fall in place for them, this team could be one of those.

    Just got a feeling Joe is destined to ride off into the sunset in Pasadena. Sports just work like that sometimes.

    I'm glad you pointed this out and Mandel for that matter. I was thinking the same thing. The logical part of me hates polls but the passionate fan can't help but smile with a small number next to Penn st.

  • Tough to disagree with Mandel. Arkansas is ranked where they are solely on the preseason hype that has stuck with them all season, which is bull****.

    Having said that (Larry David would hate me) ranking right now really doesnt mean much if we dont win or remaining games. The only way we will make a BCS bowl is if we win the conference so...

    Arkansas is ranked as high as it is because in back to back weeks, it beat then #14 Texas A&M and then destroyed then #15 Auburn. While those two aren't ranked - maybe A&M is, they are two significant wins.

    No, they're really not. Neither of those teams are worth much of anything. Arkansas is about as overrated as they come, and South Carolina's schedule is looking like a cakewalk (but that can't happen in the SECzzz!!!!!). People just overrating them because of the conference they play in.

    Oh yes, and victories over Illinois and Iowa are worth everything, right? Talking about one's schedule looking like a joke at this stage is very hypocritical, especially when you consider PSU's at this stage.

    I am so ambivalent about this team. At this point in the season I and many were expecting 7-2 and not 8-1. Although it looks like this team is "overachieving" that can only apply to the D. The special teams weren't so specail to start but are very adequate if not good right now. The O, flat out stinks! I dunno. I hope for the best but I expect the worst. Let's hope the bye week and hosting the 'huskers at home is the launching pad for the gauntlet that is th end of this season and we win 2 of the last 3.

    I dont think bills said anything about PSU there? Not sure how any of what you said makes Arky's ranking/perception/teams beat any better?

    Calling it how it is, neither Arky or PSU are great top to bottom teams right now IMO. One however is ranked 15 to 16...if PSU were ranked no8 and had A&M and Auburn as their "signature" wins, I cant say I would blame someone for calling them overrated. Im not sure you would either.

    I also dont think we are actually underrated currently, but that is JMO there. I am one that feels the next 3 games will answer that query. We should be 8-1, I am not jumping for joy over it, but I dont have to be unhappy about it either.

    Seltz is right, I never said anything about PSU. I'm just saying I don't think those wins against aTm and Auburn are very impressive at all. As far as PSU goes...that's another story. Their schedule is at least as unimpressive. And if they were a top ten team, I'd have a huge problem with that. But...they aren't. If Arkansas were ranked 16th, I'd say that's probably about right to be honest. shrug

    That's not absurd. I agree. But if we win 2/3 of the proverbial "gauntlet" then 20's is inappropriate IMO. We are the 2nd lowest ranked 1-loss team in the top 25. Our D is bonafide top-5. Our O does just enough to win. I challenge you to compare this 8-1 versus our 2003 3-9 season and focus on "margin of victory". The difference is just enough O and a lot more D between 3-9 and 8-1 to date, which could easily end up 9-3 this year vs. 3-9 in 2003. I like our record to date and I LOVE our D...just can't hang my hat on the consistency of the O this year, but I'm hoping for the best!
