MM: more comp, yds and TD's & less ints than Johnny Football.

  • Pretty damn impressive! For my money, the single greatest year-over-year improvement I have ever seen at Penn State. I'm not a big fan of his leadership, but his stats are hard to argue...

  • His biggest improvement has been the reduction in turnovers. IMO, it's hard to compare the stats otherwise since he went from arguably the least QB friendly offense in the country to one of the most. For all of McGloin's statistical improvement, I think we will have a "system" offense like Texas Tech under Mike Leach in which all our QB's will put up great numbers. Truly great QB's in the offense will put up outrageous numbers.

Ie: the leadership...Are you kidding me . I don't know where all this BS about McGloin comes from. OK he threw 5 picks in 1 game (do you think if we had our current staff that would have happened) . He also gets in a scuffle with a kid who by all accounts could never stay out of trouble and was kicked off of the team. Do I agree with all of the antics ...not really. Ask yourself the question..Where would this team be without McGloin?

  • Only 1200 more rushing yards for MM and they'd practically be clones...

  • I'd also like to point out that I too have thrown less ints than Jonny Football.

Uhmmmm?... I thought I was being very complimentary. I don't want this thread to veer towards the negative. My point was his stats are better than a very hyped (and deservedly so) QB and his improvement in just one off-season has been nothing short of remarkable.

His stats are not better. That 1200 yards rushing is a ridiculous difference. That said, McGloin's improvement has been a very pleasant surprise.

Yes they are better. More completions, yards and TD's and less picks, which are the core QB stats. Yes, Manziel is also a great runner, but McGloin has better QB stats

Great, then you start your team with MM, I'll start mine with Jonny Football.

McGloin is already the starter of "MY" Team !!! And my post was in no way a slight on Manziel. That kid is amazing. But if you just want to shit on a positive post on our QB, then knock yourself out.

Wrong. His stats are better. A&M's adjusted for opponents stats in success rate + explosiveness (advanced metric for QB's) have them as the 9th best passing game in CFB. PSU's are 68th. Manziel's standard quarterback rating is better as well. JM has better stats.

And 100/100 people would take JM over MM on the field.

That wasn't my point. It was merely to point out that McGloin's stats of completions, yards, TD's and picks are better than a very hyped QB. I think Manziel is amazing. I wasn't arguing about who I'd start my team with. Jesus man!

Hence why I said originally, "JM's stats are better, but MM's improvement has been a very pleasant surprise." Then you told me MM's stats are better, which they aren't.

Let's just stop bickering and agree that MM has been much better than expected.

Ok, good idea. But, just to be clear - McGloin has more completions, more yards passing, more passing TD's and less interceptions than Manziel. But Manziel has many more yards rushing. And a higher completion percentage. Are we good ??

  • Kid was a RS frosh who has played some very serious defenses and did damn well. MM did better than we could have imagined this year, but he was a 5th year senior too. Manzel is a very special player to do what he did and he will be a force for a few more years to come. Both kids had incredible years, but for very different reasons. Tip your cap to both and move along IMO.

I think you have to give BOB a lot of credit. His system gets the play in quick and gives the QB time to see what the defense is doing and make simple changes if necessary. Last year we had an offense that was highly predictable, and MM was told to just run the play as it's called. No quarterback is going to flourish in a system like that unless he has highly superior athletes around him that can just execute the play and inflict it's will on the defense. I really think this is the big reason for all of MM's perceived poor decisions and throws in years past. This coaching staff trusted him from day one and gave him a lot of authority to change things on the fly and that's been the big difference.

Absolutely B.O'B gets a ton of credit! No question about it! But I just wanted to give Matt some credit in my OP - but that obviously back-fired.... instead of recognizing an incredible improvement, what we instead focused on is why Johnny Maziel is better. Which is fine - threads take on their own personality....

Did you just fall off the turnip truck yesterday, did you?

Don't you know you have to walk on egg shells around here when talking about MM? How dare you point out how some of MM's stats compare favorably to someone who's considered a better QB than him.
