London's delicate juggling act

Penn State running backs coach Charles London came into the season with a plan for his tailbacks. With one turn of starter Bill Belton's ankle, that went out the window.

Dukes should be pissed - hard to believe he doesn't put up better #s than ZZ if given the same opportunity. And watching Derek Day play ahead of him ... PLEASE.

Dukes should be pissed at himself. He needs to be able to learn a play book. He needs to know where to block and understand it. He should be pissed that he is not able to play more because he can not understand the plays. All on him

  • To say there is more to playing RB at this level than taking the ball and running would be a tremendous understatement. We've seen 2 different coaching staffs allow kids with less natural ability to pass Dukes and keep him no higher than 3rd team (often 4th or even 5th). If that isn't a clue to what's going on I'm not sure what is.

  • So far no one is putting up better numbers than Zwinak. He fights for every yard and often carries several defenders with him. Zordich also runs hard. Both take care of the football.
Like several others posters pointed out, there must be a reason Dukes has remained lower on the depth chart under different coaching regimes.

  • Two things ...

    1) All of these kids stayed thinking their options were limited playing behind Silas Redd. If Redd had stayed, these guys would still be here. It says a lot about them working hard for their shot, and about their commitment. So glad ALL of them have had a chance to shine.

    2) Omar Easy, oh sorry, Dukes, should take advantage of the sanctions and transfer. Maybe he is graduating and could do it anyway as a 5th year senior. But he obviously feels he has done what is necessary to get on the field. Maybe he thinks he is Omar Easy and can walk into the NFL on pure talent. Easy did it. Maybe Dukes can. But the clock is ticking on his PSU career clearly.

    ok a third thing ...

    3) I don't know if we need that home run threat from the RB position. It would be nice, but our offense doesn't depend on it. Control the ball and strike thru the air when the opportunities are there. It is effective. We'd all like to see Belton break a 50-yd TD run against the Buckeyes. But I'll smile just as broadly if we can be a ball control pass-run offense and score.

    Its called game planning.

Not a smart move at all.

Yeah, BO'B can punish him by taking him off the kickoff team...ouch!

I disagree. No team should depend on big plays to score. But no team, not even the Patriots, can always consistently maintain long drives 3 or 4 yards at a time. Sometimes the guys on the other side of the line are pretty good too. Having a "game-changer"/"home run threat" could be the difference in a close game when the offense isn't firing on all cylinders, which is going to happen.

The point is that Dukes' chances of climbing the RB depth chart probably just went down a bit with his public statements.

  • Zach Zwinak = Larry Csonka. Gotta love the way he pounds it. Almost surprising he didn't leave in August considering his place on the depth chart. Shows the commitment level of the players and how quickly BOB established command.

    What am I, omniscient?

    PSU

  • Dukes apparently considered Syracuse(?) in August but that might have been him pursuing them more than vice versa. Plus he sat out spring to concentrate on academics, so that put him behind in learning BOB's offense. With Day and Zordich gone next year and a full spring practice in 2013, Dukes will have a fair shot to be in the mix next fall, if he has the resolve to stick it out.
