Local sports radio

  • Just seeing what people thought of their local sports radio shows. Living near Buffalo, I catch the shows once and awhile. The AM one isn't too bad, the PM one is fair. PM shift is pretty quick to dump a call or just rip a callers thought/question apart IMO.
Had a host called "The Coach" (coached DL for the Bills years back), he was pretty cool.

  • Live near Detroit...
Pre-scandal, I listened quite a bit to all the local shows... the morning drive is a mix of sports and random commentary. The mid-day show was pretty sports focused and I enjoyed it on lunch breaks. The afternoon drive, Valenti and Foster, is a very popular show... Valenti a MSU grad, and he spent a lot of time ripping UM, so I always liked that... and Valenti know's his sports, thats for sure, he usually has to "dummy down" to keep the interest of the casual fans.
Then the scandal hit... the entire station, carried on both AM/FM were PSU scandal 24-7 for the entire first week... just shredding Joe, shredding McQueary, constantly giving their opinions that the program should shutdown, be given the death penalty. It was way overboard. It made the ESPN coverage look unbiased. I completely tuned out... haven't listened at all since... quit following them on twitter, etc.
Its not much, and obviously they probably had huge ratings that week, or they would not have been so adamantly trashing us... but I have "banned" the local shows ever since... I got myself addicted to MLB on XM, and now spend about 99% of my drive time listening to MLBXM.

    +1 for "banning" them

Another thing about the Buffalo crew, they're pretty much stuck on the Bills and Sabres. Can't really remember them talking about local college or HS sports.

  • Philly sports talk sucks. Just a bunch of loud mouths.

Commentators and color guys for sports are great. Except for Mike Quick, he sucks too. Merrell(sp?) Reese for the Eagles and Tim Saunders for the Flyers are probably two of the best in the business.

  • Denver has nice local radio. Several former Broncos and Nuggets, Albert Williams being one, who have a great personality. The only negative is they are very much homers and occasionally you will hear the “East Coast” bias thing! Funny because I can go anywhere in the States and you will always find a Bronco fan.

Franzke is underrated too. I wish he would do the Phils television broadcasts.

  • I assume you are referring to Shopp and the Bulldog in Buff. They are ok. I like the Bulldog because he seems to generally like people and is more like a real "guy". Shopp was our radio guy in Rochester before heading up to Buffalo. I am glad he's gone. The guys we have had since have been much better. I like John Ditullio who is our present guy. He's a Penn State grad and it was nice to have him on the air as the scandal was going down. He bore his heart every day and answered everyones foolish questions. Must have been hard as hell for him to go live every day during that month.

You hit the nail right on the head. Bulldog is ok, Shopp on the other hand.....

Huh. I lived in Bflo back in the last century, and "coach" Chuck Dickerson was on. As a former NFL D line coach, he certainly knew aspects of football quite well. But he was a grade A Ahole. He could never get past his hatred for the Bills and especially Marv Levy, to give a balanced opinion. And he pretendednto know hockey, but he didn't know the difference between cross-checking and fore-checking.

Agree. I guess I meant to say his shows had a lot more flair than the current hosts.

  • Sirius xm college sports nation is where it is. I can only take so much of finebaum because most of the callers have an iq of 70 but if I'm in the car and listsing to talk its what I have on

  • The only guy in Philadelphia sports talk that I like is Mike Missanelli. He was the only voice of reason for Penn State during the scandal. (He's a PSU grad) Everyone else in Philadelphia (Anthony Gargano, Angelo Cataldi etc.) are all top sensationalists with little to no real information.

  • Back when I was at home I listened to Mike Misanelli. I moved out to Pittsburgh last August and I can't stand the local guys - one because I dislike Pittsburgh and that's obviously what they talk about, and two because they are all freaking annoying especially on 93.7 the fan. The afternoon guy on 970 AM isn't too bad. He's reasonable, but kind of bland, I can't think of his name at this time.

I listen to national espn broadcasts (SVP is my favorite, I listen to Mike & Mike in the morning but they have really stupid opinions at times, and I like Cowherd) and I listen to Misanelli on my iPhone during my drive home. The thing I like about Cowherd and Misanelli are that they are both straight shooters and will give a unique opinion.
