Lions stun Michigan with late surge

  • P.S. I see a little bit of Joe Crispin in Graham Woodward's game and a little bit of Titus Ivory in Geno Thorpe's game too. That was always a good combo.

the way woodward stops and pops jumpers is very crispin-esque. We'll have some good guard play lined up and just need to get a few more bigs. Having Travis and Taylor for 2 and 3 more years respectively is great, but neither is really a post player and right now they both look most like a SF to me. I'm not sure what we can expect going forward from Graham or Ackerman and I'm really hoping that Moore can start to fill the void as early as next year.

    1) We've talked about bigs before in a couple of threads and I'm convinced you don't need great bigs to win. Just serviceable forwards who can rebound and run the floor.

    2) I fully expect one or both of Graham or Ackerman not be be on the team next year.

  • Hopefully a few recruiting targets were watching or will get a DVD of the game.

Speaking of....if anyone sees a replay scheduled please post time and date!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that you don't need great bigs to win, but we need someone who can defend the post. Next year we don't even have an Andrew Jones level post defender. Graham was coming along last year I thought, especially as a defender, but seems to have regressed. Obvious Sasa stepped up and took the job, but Graham really fell back this year IMO.

It would be nice to see a line up of Frazier, Newbill, Marshall, Travis, and Taylor but I think we are going to need someone to step up in the post and both Travis and Taylor are really SFs who play facing the basket.

We know someone is leaving, because the numbers demand it. I won't speculate on who it will be, but the guys you mention are possible. I disagree that both could leave though because we'll need to keep one of them.

Jon Graham lost like 25 pounds between this last year and this year.... I understand why he did it, but it hasn't suited him well.

Weren't some ready to call Brooks a bust at this point in his career? Obviously not the same situation, but he's got a lot of time left

Absolutely, but Brooks was a top 150 kid who just needed to mature and gain confidence. Graham has no where near the skill set that Brooks had. But point taken that you can't write off kids after their Soph/Junior years all the time. Heck just look at Sasa the last 10 games.

  • There has been some discussion in the past about the development of some players under Chambers (Graham and others).

This is only Chambers' second year. This year Marshal has been a lot more consistent than the past. He's having a good year. Travis is also showing development lately a great game last night but has shown improvement this year. Obviously Sasa has shown remarkable improvement lately. These players are learning and developing.

Not ready to totally write off Graham. Next year will be his year to "shine" or bust.

I think Chambers has done a remarkable job. The team's attitude is remarkable under the circumstances. Key players are developing. And next year is looking promising with the infusion of talent!!!

Ya, a comparison to someone with the natural ability of Brooks is a little misleading, but the point about writing players off too early is a good one. Sasa is a much better case study, but in his case, I have to wonder how much of his seemingly sudden emergence was the change in offensive scheme. Right about the time when his numbers started increasing PSU starting run the offense through him at the top of the key with regularity. IMO, that put him in a position that played to his strengths. He's got a decent short range jumper and can create plays with more distance between him and the basket. He never looked that comfortable as a true, back to the basket, post player.

With Graham, I'm not even sure what type of player he is. He's been mostly playing a a center role, but his offense pretty much consists of put backs. I'm not sure I've seen much of a jumper, a dunk, or anything resembling a good post move from him with any regularity. purely man on man in the post, I think he's probably our best defender under the basket, but he also gets lost on too many possessions. Basically, I'm not sure he has an identity yet and that has to be the first step for him. Maybe he could be an Andrew Jones type player that does his best defensively and is a bit of an after thought on offense. With excellent guard play, that might be enough to get things moving next year.

The Nittany Lions got their first conference win of the season Wednesday in thrilling fashion, knocking off No. 4 Michigan 84-78 in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Wahoo!!! That is awesome on so many levels. First off I take my hats off dor the senior day win!!!! Secondly for beating a ranked opponent!!!! thirdlyand my most favorite part of all is beating ANY team from michigan!!!!! When I saw this I jumped up off the couch. If I were in UP I would buy those young men a round of ice cream.

  • Great win for these young men. Should give them a boost heading into the offseason.

Next year we get a huge infusion of talent. Frazier, Johnson, and four capable recruits. We need to see major improvement next year.

  • That was a great win. Couldn't be happier for coach Chambers and his charges. I really think that now they should just go out and play hard and have fun. Stoked for these guys...
