Lions make an impression on Reeder

Wilmington (Del.) Salesianum linebacker Troy Reeder recently picked up an offer from Penn State, and watched the Nittany Lions in action over the weekend.

  • He'd be a great addition to the LB tradition. Love his size.

  • When I moved to Wilmington for my first post-college job, I lived with friends that played at Salesianum. They speak highly of Reeder's talent.

For those who don't know, Reeder committed to UNC for lacrosse his freshman year. Looks like football will be the ticket now, however.

  • Really hope our limited 2014 class is filled with a ton of defense. At least a corner and a safety, couple LB's, couple DT's.

UNC made the lax tourney every year since '07 and they were at the top of the sport in the 80's to mid-90's. They're a solid choice for anyone in lacrosse and of course, the education is stellar. Excellence in two sports speaks volumes. Think back to the excellence of Sean Lee playing hoops and Evan Royster playing lacrosse,

It's going to need to be done that way. We will still have somewhat an abundance of players on offense. Wont need a TE; might need a few OL, maybe a RB depending on what comes in this year and maybe a QB if we don't get another one this year

  • Thanks for the story, Sean. Reeder reminds me of Ferns. He has to be one of my favorite recruits for 2014.

  • At sallies the two most respected CFB programs are ND and PSU. It only helps that Szczerba's family works there. It'll be awesome is PSU can get him, but he'll definitely do his due diligence.

Agree in general, however the recent non-NCAA scandal at UNC (University of No Classes) may tarnish that general statement. Just my $0.02.

    This may clear things up...

North Carolina Tar Heels' academic scandal exemplifies NCAA hypocrisy - ESPN

When it comes to determining the legitimacy and academic integrity of high school core courses, the NCAA deems itself an authority. When it comes to fraudulent courses on college campuses, such as the scandal at North Carolina, it defers to the institution. There's a word for that: baloney.

(CBS Sports needs a proofreader. Below is an excerpt.)

Despite this essentially being Phase One of the internal investigation (and why isn't the NCAA bringing more of its own to Chapel Hill? Fine question.), the news is already drawing rolling eyeballs. Beacuse we have actual evidence of transcription forgeries and a rogue professor who went from an esteemed position to poofing into the air within weeks of this story initially breaking. The overwhelming sample of football players (a few hoops players as well) taking classes leads plenty to believe rules were bent or broken to improve grades, ergo, improve eligibility.

Tar Heels cleared of academic scandal by NCAA -- for now - CBSSports.com

UNC revealed Friday that, over a year ago, it notified the NCAA of And in the year since, the NCAA has looked into the possible fraud within UNC's academic department. It did so only on the basis of investigating players who took phony courses or received spurious grades. Seems UNC: in the clear.

That would be the show/No Show option classes at UNC that 66% of student athletes in the class who chose the latter options. And since the NCAA has no authority the decided not to punish UNC. Of course there was no indication that this was a problem because it had only been perpetrated by UNC for decades.

Now, the only sanctions NCAA is interested in applying is criminal matters that are completely out of its jurisdiction, ergo Penn State.

Why go and punish a school for gaining a competitive advantage thru no-show classes? Because many of the no-show students were on the BB team the past 20 years and that program is obviously beyond reproach.

    Interesting tidbit there, Sean.

Glad to know we are recruiting quite the versatile crop of kids. That's definitely going to be needed down the road.

For those unaware, Lacrosse is a partial scholarship sport. You may carry 50 kids, and there are a total of 11 scholarships to split. Someone might get a larger share, obviously for those highly recruited kids, but full rides do not happen. I was with a group when Dave Pietramala bluntly said that he's never given nor known of anyone who got a full ride. If you hear it, it's a whopper.

He actually said he's had kids ask to be relieved from their partial scholarships to give them a better overall aid package.

UNC is a good school, and a good academic choice, and lax is a great choice there. But there are considerations.

Lacrosse players seem to develop great field vision. Really showed with Royster.
