Lions looking to rebuild depth

As they wait for some key players to return from injuries, Bill O'Brien and the Nittany Lions will see if they can find some walk-on help this week.

  • The sanctions are what they are, but a few guys that played high school football and want to keep playing are going to get the chance to live a dream by walking onto the team.

  • Who normally comes to these things...only current PSU students? Any idea on a # of participants?

  • I just called Lasch about an hour ago and was transferred to compliance about the tryouts and the woman said applications were closed last week.

**** man WTF. I'm pissed. She said try again in the springtime if they do it.

They are mostly invites. Guys who someone knows, and word got around that they can play.

Yeah, for a kid without connections...it is pretty difficult. I had a friend try to walk-on and the old staff wanted game tape and several other items (what they were escape me now) before they would even grant him a workout in shorts. My buddy was trying to play DB, but didn't have the tape (went to a small high school and played DE in 5-3-3) . Needless to say, he didn't get an invite.

Is that how it works at other places? The world might have never heard of Rudy if that is the case.

They put up fliers and announcements sometimes, mid season stuff doesn't necessarily work that way always.

  • They don't have enough bodies to fill all their scout team duties/needs.
For example, the long snappers and backup kickers currently play the role of blitzing LBs in the O-line's blitz pickup period.

They are looking for help with the scout teams more than anything.

fun fact, my buddy luke is gonna try out tomorrow for kicker, ive sen him kick twice now, he got a huge crowd by the park, ive seen him consistantly hit 45 yarders from middle and sides, but thats with perfect holds and no pressure, hopefully he does well

  • Even Indiana University requires tape prior to trying out.

  • I tried out in 2003/2004 timeframe, same time as Ethan Kilmer. I tried out twice - first time I was the only player to catch every ball, and I ran a 4.08 shuttle run, but I was slow as hell for a WR (4.8). The coaches told me to come back in the spring and I would make the team if I was running a 4.6 or so 40. I did, they told me I would make the team, and then I tore my hamstring later in tryouts, and I didn't make the team.

That was literally the extent of it back then - no video, or anything like that. There were about 40 people there. I'd say 30-35 were small LB/RB to WR/DB size, with 5-10 big boys.

  • Anyone know how the tryouts went? Any update?
