Learning pt from Oregon, Never cooperate with NCAA

  • Apparently U Oregon Administration has much bigger balls than ours, challenging NCAA. Think they seen what happened to PSU when Erickson rolled over and play dead for Emmert, Ray et al, and decided not to cooperate.

  • Could be good or could be bad. By failing to cooperate they may get worse punishment then had they cooperated.

  • I think PSU proved nothing good comes from actually cooperating with the NCAA. The illusion of cooperation a la OSU is the way to go.

  • Until the NCAA comes out with a harsh enough penalty for not cooperating IDK why anyone should. If I'm the NCAA and you don't cooperate 100% it's an automatic 10 Scholarships and no Bowls for two years and no transfer penalty for one year. That's before the NCAA finds anything. I hate the NCAA as much as anyone but schools can't just keep their mouth shut and wait for them to go away. Their an NCAA member and should follow what the NCAA says. They stonewall... boom punished.

  • We got caught in a trap. There were so many things going on when the Jerry Sandusky news but, and the NCAA was already being critized by the media. You had the cam newton story, Miami, psu, and I'm sure there were others. The NCAA flexed its muscle on us to try to get everyone back in line. It was like a perfect storm. Media wanted swift and quick judgement, whenever you add kids to a crime people become very emotional and sometimes irrational. With that kind of reaction and no leadership the NCAA had free run on us.

Had the NCAA done their normal investigation I don't think the penalties would have been as severe.

  • Did you guys read the article? Oregon is not exactly telling the NCAA to go F themselves. They are fighting, but it's not exactly a strong fight.

Agreed, it was a perfect storm of media firestorm, public outrage, and BOT ineptitude. NCAA had to do something because people in the media were going nuts and Emmert had an ego trip to try and reestablish the power of the NCAA. PSU was the example used by Emmert to try and bring the schools under control.

Agreed. The NCAA relied completely on the Freeh report, admitting it could not have staffed that investigation. They also admit they could have done an equally incompetent job at a much cheaper price over a much longer time.

Cooperating is one thing; totally capitulating and cowtowing and arriving at the negotiations full of apologies is another.

This case will be studied for years as how not to handle a crisis.

PSU really thought by being proactive that the NCAA would be kinder to them. Instead, PSU got hammered. So yes, I doubt any other school would offer a complete and transparent investigation and then allow the NCAA to see it. PSU did not gain anything by doing what they did. However, the NCAA is in a bit of trouble with their USC investigation. There was a lot of smoke, but they could not really find the fire. They pinned a lot on Coach McNair and he in turn sued the NCAA. Right now, his case is exposing a lot of lies that were peddled by the NCAA.

I agree. They are simply pleading their case like anyone would do if brought up on legal charges, even if guilty. They are admitting that there were some violations, but are trying to explain them in a way that avoids the big hammer. Instead of agreeing that they paid him $25,000 to deliver recruits, they are attempting to say that it was a matter of him not providing written reports as mandated and the school making an error by not getting them 4 times per year. A violation related to missed documentation is a lot better than the allegation that he was paid for his influence.

either way, I don't think anyone is buying that. The guy has been pretty honest in what he was paid for, Oregon was scrambling to try to get some type of documentation produced after the fact, and there is not a shred of evidence to dispute what the scout claims even though the NCAA demands it 4 times per year.

I actually think Emmert and Co could lay the wood because they didn't cooperate, but who knows. Frankly, the NCAA is clueless about this stuff. A school like PSU whose issues were questionably related to the NCAA spends over $6 million on their own investigation, allowed the findings to be read live without preview, and then simply agreed to the sanctions allowing the NCAA to not even start an investigation. Yet, the NCAA slams them harder than ever before in their history. If they were smart and wanted schools to cooperate, they should be going on easy on a school like PSU that has gone WELL above and beyond in their cooperation.

Amen. The media was allowed to shape the narrative from day one, with PSU doing nothing to try to dispute their version of events. In the end the public was whipped into a frenzy and wanted blood, and our gutless BOT was more than happy to offer up the football team to satisfy that desire. The goal was to deflect all attention away from them, and any connections they had with TSM and other entities. By accepting Freeh and signing the consent decree they proclaimed loud and clear this was about football with nothing else to see here.

Sadly if we had strong leaders with integrity who would have put the interests of PSU over their own, we would not have received a quarter of what we got. A real leader would have said that we need to allow due process to play out. We will do an internal investigation to see where we failed, but will also wait for the results of the trials of Sandusky, Spanier, Curley, and Schultz. before drawing our conclusion. We should have invited the NCAA to do a full investigation, and when they found that no rules had been violated they would have had to move along. Instead we handed Emmert a sledge hammer and asked nicely, "Could you do us a favor and beat our freakin' brains in? Thanks."

Every action from day one has made us look guilty as sin. 1)PSU's deafening silence 2)Dick Rod's "I'm Sorry" world tour. 3)Freeh Report Acceptance. 4)De-Paternification of PSU's athletic facilities and campus 5)Signing the consent decree. 6)Breaking out the checkbook for anybody with a potential claim 7)The entire "Move Forward" mantra. The entire saga makes me physically ill. Try to imagine OSU, ND, Texas, or some other pier program rolling over in the manner that our administration did. Sickening.pukeface

PSU's issue in this whole thing was to give Freeh the ability to give his opinion of what he thought had happened to the public and to accept it as fact. The scope of the Freeh investigation should have been merely to find gaps in compliance within the university. If that is what PSU asked from Freeh, the NCAA wouldn't have been in a position to sanction us as they did.

    EDIT: Stupid spell check.

yup. The NCAA sanctions all come down to Freeh's assertion that the head coach, the AD, and the president all consistently concealed evidence in this case for 10 years to avoid bad PR for the football program.

That's it. That's the single sentence that gave the NCAA any leg to stand on.

This is exactly the point I made a few weeks ago. The PSU situation showed every other University that cooperating with the NCAA won't help them at all.

The NCAA thought they were making a power play by hammering PSU when in reality they made their own job much, much harder and as a result have even less power than they did before.

Kids learn this in grade school. If a teacher asks "who threw that" and then punishes the kid that speaks up, you think any other kids are going to cooperate with that teacher next time?

If the NCAA ever hopes to entice schools to cooperate again they have no choice but to lessen the sanctions on PSU. Otherwise, other Universities would be absolutely insane to ever cooperate with the NCAA.

Emmert and company really out did themselves with the PSU sanctions.
