Laschout is calling the O'Brien rumor BS too

  • They have some good logic attached (as usual). There's no way we are moving forward with O'Brien. nono

  • To me he just didn't/doesn't make as much sense as others. Would be shocking imo to see him named in the end

Do you all attach a lot of credibility to what this Laschout says? Are his sources so superior to all the other media sources? Wasn't he the same guy that was saying that Urban Meyer was going to be your coach?

I don't understand why anyone at PSU could think that someone like Saban would be interested in (1) following a legend and (2) coming to a program that is about to undergo at least of year of very embarrassing legal announcements. Maybe in a couple of years, a coach of his caliber would be interested in the position but I just can't see that they would be interested now.

  • I agree with what laschout is saying, if they hire him PSU football is dead.

  • of course it's a PSU planted rumor. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that you don't hire someone like this to run a business that nets $50 million dollars each year.

Actually one of Laschouts first reports was that Urban Meyer was going to OSU.. The UM to PSU stuff came from a lot of different places.. As far as your second paragraph, I think you probably have a poor perception of the mentality of PSU fans.. While your thought process isnt off base by any means and makes sense, we collectively either arent ready to accept that is our future, or we are right and you are wrong.. To be fair however, a new coach will never have to comment on those embarrassing legal announcements as it will have ZERO to do with him and the football team, assuming of course our new coach doesnt come from the current staff..

Using Saban as an example. PSU offers say 6 years, 40 million dollars (don't laugh, PSU could EASILY offer that and not lose any sleep). Almost 7 million dollars a year, you honestly think he'd sit there and go, no? Money talks, BS walks.

The rest of this is easy. Following Paterno per retirement is one thing. Following Paterno after this fiasco? Vastly different, and nowhere near the pressure since it's pretty certain Joe will no longer be around the next time PSU plays a game.

Everyone thinks that PSU is going to hire the safe and easy coach. I get it, I really do. But the numbers make NO SENSE.

PSU hires Bill O'Brien for example. Instead of 108000 people, there's 95,000. 13,000 x 6 = 78,000 fewer tickets annually. At $60 per ticket: $4,680,000 in lost revenue just in ticket sales alone. Now add in the lost money in the STEP Program, and in donations. Suddenly you're up to over 10,000,000 in lost money PER YEAR, and that's conservative.

Repeat after me. Penn State has NET at least $50,000,000 in profits over the last 6 years average (if I recall the reading right).

Like it or not, College Football is a business. You don't hire the safe and easy guys to run a 150,000,000 business annually. You hire the best guy, at whatever the cost. In this instance PSU will have to overpay, but guess what, if that's what you gotta do, then you have to do it.

It's laughable the amount of people who honestly believe that PSU is going to hire some nobody coach. Absolutely absurd.

$$$ talks, and we have the financial ability to get someone decent. Nick Saban? Not realistic. But, it's well within the realm of reasonable thought to believe that we can land someone from an upper tier program by throwing $4-4.5 million at them. Prior to this mess, perhaps it wouldn't have been necessary to make such a large investment to attract a better name. At this point, it's probably the only way. The committee knows it, and is willing to do it. The only way that we completely strike out is if a lot of people don't feel like making $4 million/yr. Last time I checked...$4 million isn't toxic.

  • I'm not buying the O'Brien rumor and I don't need a reporter/columnist to tell me. It doesn't make sense right now. It could be weeks before O'Brien is available to anyone, and I don't think PSU wants to deal with uncertainties right now. Not to mention, I question whether he has the pelts to run a major college program. It just doesn't make sense.
