LaVar Arrington On Joe Paterno: “I Didn’t Know The Person I Thought I Did” [Video]

    Good stuff, FJP.

It should be a lesson to all who considered Joe a hero. LaVar interacted with Joe on a level that I suspect no-one on this board has, and still didn't REALLY know him. Yet people who see him on television and read about him in papers and magazines think they know what he's like? Charles Barkley was 1000% correct that athletes (and coaches) should not be role models.

Have you ever heard LA's radio show? It's embarrassing... This is his "I'm a part of the media schtick". Guess what if Lavar wants to give away all his PSU stuff or burn his diploma (whatever he said a few months ago) and now he jumps on the JVP bandwagon so be it ...we don't need ya LaVar if that's the way you feel. BTW I think PSU botched this entire situation to the high heavans... but I'm still not ready to buy into the cover up theory yet...

Well, I would argue that NO ONE should be idolized, if you think about it.

However, given what Joe had previously done for the university and for thousands of former players, I think he is worthy of respect.

Even your grandfather and that first graduate did stupid shit along the way. I know that Joe messed up here, but it does not erase FOR ME all of the good he did.

He lost my respect the moment he lied about not knowing about '98 and let someone run around campus for 10+ years assaulting children.

Stupid shit is driving around with a burnt out taillight and thinking it's no big deal. Stupid stuff is forgetting your wallet in a taxi. Letting someone run around campus for 10+ years is not "Stupid shit"

No, I wasn't referring to menial mistakes. The point is, no one is perfect, and even those that have done tremendous good have their flaws and have made mistakes, some would consider unforgivable.

42, you have always come across as a reasonable poster. Do you know Joe personally? If so, how well? Either way, do you know enough about him to say without reservation that he was incapable of actively participating in a cover-up? I think that is FJP's point. There are very few people in my life (at 43), who I would stick my neck out for as a character witness and Joe is not one of them. Nor should he be for anyone who only knows him from afar. Not to take away from all that he has previously done, but people do good things for bad reasons and bad things with the best of intentions. You never really know.

That's because Presidents make MUCH tougher decisions then what Joe was faced with. Joe was faced with a pretty easy decision.

    +1

I don't know why its so hard for some people to reconcile the fact that Joe had both good and bad qualities. Some people are willing to defend him to the end even in the face of mounting evidence showing that he royally f'd up. Conversely you have others who want to tear down everything he accomplished, burn it and then piss on it to put it out. To me its simple. Just because he exhibited a disturbing lack of leadership in handling Sandusky, it does not undo a lifetime spent developing student athletes and giving back to the school and society. That said just because he spent a lifetime developing student athletes and giving back to the school and society he in no way deserves a pass for his lack of leadership. Its okay to believe both.

Do you really need concrete proof that Joe knew in 98? The idea he had no idea is laughable even before the Freeh report came out.

It is great to be able to play Monday morning qb. 1998 was not what you and everyone in the media is making it out to be. It was NOT a child rape case. The da, police, government groups looked at it and decided there was not enough evidence of any wrong doing. My understanding is they thought Jerry was weird not a pedophile. This by no means excuse what happened in 2001 but if you honestly read that report it is not very impressive. Psu deserves a lot of money back because it was an opinion piece. The facts like emails gave no information just allowed people to interpret them.

So no was your answer to the actual question right?

Knew what in 98, is what some wish to know. Knew there was incident with JS and a child, I think so. Dismissed after being looked at by Police, Child Welfare, and whoever else. Is there more we know Joe knew? Details? (I thought the Freeh report would show that)

The perjury talk comes from this is well. What were the questions specifically? What were the answers specifically? Combined with, and not dissected from, the rest of the conversation for context.

People have judged and concluded some things. Others wish for fact not speculation. I can never understand the outrage from people for those wishing for actual fact rather than creation. In this or other cases wherever, about whatever. Few and far between are any who are trying to exonerate Joe of any wrongdoing. But some wish to wait before passing a final 'degree' or level of blame(for lack of a better term coming to me now). Is it so wrong to wait for actual evidence?

I think the bold part is key. Based on what we do know, the possibility certainly exists that Joe lied to the grand jury. But what exactly was the question? If Joe was asked: "do you know about any prior abuse incidences involving Sandusky?" Then the answer is obviously no, because 1998 wasn't a child abuse issue.

If I remember correctly, McQueary's testimony in court actually contradicted parts of his testimony in the grand jury report. Yet he was never charged with perjury. Might be a reason for that.

Not well, but I did to a very small extent.

I think that Joe was in over his head when it came to Sandusky. Joe was a football coach and a philanthropist. An expert on child sexual abuse, at his age, he was not.

I'm not excusing him, but I also wouldn't expect anyone his age to fully grasp the gravity of this situation in the moment.

Joe failed us and those victims, but I don't believe he did it out of malice.

Add one more person capable of their own critical thinking to the list. The number is now up to about 43 between all the PSU message boards, the entire national media, and pretty much the whole country. Life is so much easier when you just let people tell you what to think. All hail Master Freeh, he who possesses the unmatched ability to read people's minds.

Sigh, nobody is mad for the inaction in 1998. They are mad because Joe lied about knowing anything about it and then when MM came to him in 2001 he still did little to nothing. I don't care how weak the case was in 1998, if you knew it happened and then had a second incident it should raise red flags to anyone with a brain. Goole me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.
