LIVE from Corbett's press conference

  • Schultz said he's heard the BOT will make their own statement.

"Quite frankly, they don't have a role in this."

Pay the $60 million, keep it in state, wipe out all the other sanctions. I'm good with that.

The money should have went to existing nonprofit organizations with the ability to use that money to directly impact the lives of victims and prevent future crimes. Not establish a new entity like I read the NCAA intended to do.

shrug Wasn't stepping on anyone's toes. Was just trying to supplement, as it's not the easiest thing to transcribe.

Sorry bills, didn't mean it like that. Just noticed there were duplicate updates coming through.

  • So what happens now with sanctions, say they do fight it and win... what do we get back. Can't get back the guys that left, or the guys that didn't come because of sanctions, can't get extra scholarships or the BIG title game back or a missed bowl game back. It's great they're doing this it's just 6 months too late. If the NCAA drags this out over two years from now what's the point? We're just going to get hammered anyway.

  • I have no problem with the timing of this and think that the delay had to do with the Sandusky trial.

Imagine if Corbett and the AG would have come out and said before the trail that the Freeh report was incomplete. The defense would have used this against them in court. I would rather them take there time and get everything lined up and just not rush to file and have it thrown out.

  • One positive about delaying taking up this fight until now - - - it gives the perception to the country that this was VERY calculated and well thought out. If he had this press conference a week after the sanctions were given, it would look a little desperate; as if Corbett was just trying to defend his big state University.

Now, with all the research the state has compiled, the NCAA may be a little nervous.

    Better late than never...

I have no problem with the Athletic Dept. or University paying a fine... unacceptable things did go down at PSU and there should be punishment, like a fine, just the NCAA should not administer it or decide what it goes to.

They are going to be settling civil suits with the victims for a hell of a lot more than $60 million, that is the punishment. Tacking on an additional $60 million is arbitrary and unjustified, unless you actually believe there was a conscious coverup

  • Maybe Franco will do this thing a favor and just shut up now. Heck, even Scott Paterno knew when to shut up.

Corbett: "The NCAA's leadership can't make up its own rules."

"A handful of top NCAA officials simply inserted themselves into an issue they had no authority to (sic) under their own bylaws."

So, why do this all six months after the fact instead of two weeks after the fact?

Also it takes the emotion out of it for people. Now maybe they can sit back and think a little more clearly on it, rather than being on a gigantic witch hunt.

I don't think Corbett had any of that in mind when he decided to do this, however.

  • Someone should ask if they intend to seek an injunction to stay any further implementation of the sanctions pending the outcome of the lawsuit. I assume they will, and if the NCAA is smart they will voluntarily agree to it anyway, but if any of your writers/staff members are at the PC they should ask.

Boy, this is a double edged sword to request. On one hand, sanctions could get immediately lifted. On the other hand, if PA loses the lawsuit, you've only delayed the sanctions another year or two.

  • Did anyone else listening notice the adversarial tone of a lot of the reporters asking questions?

It almost had the feel that they were incredulous that anyone was possibly challenging all of the destruction that they worked so hard to create.

    It was borderline enraging.

As happy as I am to FINALLY see someone fight back against the BS sanctions and NCAA hypocrisy, this should've been done back in the summer or even sooner.

It's to Corbett's benefit politically to defend PSU, it's not like he all of a sudden had an epiphany that the sanctions were unjust, more like he saw his poll numbers. But whatever his motivation for challenging the NCAA, I'm all for it!

The NCAA had no business whatsoever getting involved in a criminal proceeding or passing moral judgment on those involved.

I thought his team did a good job of spinning it why they waited. They wanted to be thorough, unlike the NCAA and did not want to file this during the season. Both legitimate reasons to wait but not the real reason. Corbett knows he pissed off too many voters to get re-elected and is throwing up a hail mary. If he gets results in the NCAA reducing sanctions or eliminating them all together, he will win back the people he pissed off. He may get a portion back just for fighting the NCAA.

Thought I heard someone towards the end about getting an injunction, but I wasn't paying full attention. I would assume they'd either get an injunction and/or look to pass this through the courts very quickly.

Honestly, as much as I want the sanctions to disappear, I'd hate seeing the football program in limbo. If the sanctions aren't overturned, that would mean that "Freeh agency" (as some like to call it) would be postponed to another year. It would also put the number of scholarships that BOB and co. could offer in limbo. Just hard to operate with the possibility of sanctions returning at any moment.

There should be some kind of punishment for PSU letting this happen outside of compensating the victims. PSU the institution cannot go to jail so a fine I believe is an acceptable punishment. Pinning this on the football team however is unjust.

Additionally the mob has been given its pound of flesh from Penn St. and because of the sanctions already incurred they may be satisfied. Now I just hope that this can get the sanctions reduced and keep any money paid in state. We shall see where all this goes. It is going to be interesting to say the least.

Yeah - I think even if the sanctions are stayed that PSU still self-imposes them.

If the State wins PSU still looks like they were being a good soldier and carrying on with our "deserved" punishment and then we can get rid of the rest of them.

If the State loses, PSU will be that much more through them.

Also - I think Erickson is a wimp and that will have a lot to do with it.

I thought they asked a lot of good questions that we've all had though, mainly what is the standing of the governor in this case, why is it coming from him and not the AG or PSU

I am right there with you. I don't really have an issue with the fine at all as long as that money is being used for child abuse prevention purposes. The other sanctions were complete crap though and helped nothing.

1/2 should go to existing programs within PA and the other 1/2 should be used to buld the abuse program and research that Penn State started.
