LIVE - Bill O'Brien news conference updates Wisconsin week

  • On seniors' mark on Penn State:

"It's hard to put into words, in my opinion, what this senior class means to this football program, this athletic dept, and this university. These are young guys that have been through a lot. They've been through the death of their former head coach, been through all the things that went on off the field that don't need to be repeated, through the sanctions that came out in the summertime, that they had to lead and keep this football team togehter.

At the age of 21, 22 years old, that's pretty heady stuff. You can't say enough about them. People have to understand that inside those walls at the football building, these guys will always mean a lot. ... A lot of things are new. They had to learn new things, and lead it. You can't say enough about what this senior class has done.

At 3 o'clock on Saturday we're going to need everybody here, because we're going to honor the seniors and their families. That's the least we can do for this senior class."

  • On Morris:

"He's a guy that I really got to know right when I came here. He is a sociable guy and passionate about the game of football. He just wanted to do really well this year. He wanted to go out and help this team win. Just like all of us, he wishes we had more games. Stephon went out there every single day and got better. John Butler did a heck of a job coaching him. I know they have a very close relationship. You just can't say enough about Stephon -- where he's come from, playing some, not playing some. That's not an easy position to play in our defense. You have to come up with big plays and he's done that."

  • On what seniors have meant to him personally:

"They mean a lot to me, a lot to our coaching staff. I haven't even known these guys a full year. They bought right in, and our seniors had a lot to do with that. Everything was different. They brought the younger guys along. Personally, I will always remember these guys and hopefully will be able to have relationships with them for the rest of my life."

On making it a priority to relate to seniors:

"I made it a priority to have a relationship with every guy on the team. When I first came here, the first few months were kind of a whirlwind. I do make it a priority within the team to make sure the seniors were put in leadership roles. Being a captain for a game, leading the stretch lines, make that a priority throughout the year."

  • On bringing in new offense and how team exceeded expectations:

"I do have to say they've definitely exceeded my expectations on what we can do offensively and we can still do a lot better. I knew it was a difficult offense to learn -- it's difficult for an NFL rookie or veteran to learn. But man these guys worked -- we've said as a staff, these guys have come a long way since the start of spring practice. It takes hard work and they put the time in. So they've definitely done well to accomplish the things they've accomplished."

On Belton and how he's competing in practice:

"Billy and I have had a lot of conversations over the last month and he's really improved his practice habits quite a bit. You've got a guy there in Zwinak who's gained 100 yards in (three) straight games. It's hard to take Zach out just to play another guy."

  • On sense of whether guys will be back next year:

"I'm not a mind-reader. I see a bunch of guys who enjoy playing for Penn State. I believe everybody will be back that's eligible. I don't have a crystal ball and I'm not a genie. I think they know they can achieve a lot of their goals here. Can they win a national championship or B10 championship in the next three years? No. But can they get a fantastic degree? Get an opportunity to play pro football? Play in a fun system? We have fun in practice ... excellent facilities, coaching staff, strength staff, a weight room that's incredible. A fan base ... I thought it was a testament to our fans last week to have over 90,000 fans. I think there's a lot to play for at Penn State and I think our guys realize that."

  • On Mauti's injury:

"I don't want to get into the details of Mike's knee injury. He won't play against Wisconsin. As time goes on, I'm sure you'll hear about the details. But I can't comment on that right now."

    On Hull:

"He's made some big plays for us on defense and special teams. He was in my office last night talking about football. He's a football dude. He's going to go in there and play as hard as he can, and it's going to be pretty fun to watch him play."

  • On how seniors have dealt with everything:

"To think back to when I was 19, 20, 21 ... if all the things that happened to them happened to me personally ... I don't know. It's pretty neat to watch these guys handle things. Pick things up, march themselves forward and do it the right way. We're not a perfect bunch. But we do play hard. A lot of that has to do with the senior class. We'll remember them forever."

On Maryland and Rutgers joining the Big Ten:

"I think it's fantastic. You have the East Coast market now and for many, many years Penn State was the East Coast team. Now we're starting to get that whole Atlantic corridor there, and that's two great schools with football traditions. When I was at Maryland, we had some great players. It's going to be fun to have them in the league. It'll be fun to recruit against them and play against them."

On potential sixth year for Mauti:

"Too early for that right now."

  • On Mauti helping guys prepare:

"He came and saw me on Sunday. He comes from a great family. Met with him and his parents on Sunday, and it's tough for him. He's just a football guy. It's a very difficult thing for him personally. I've been around that. Iv'e seen Tom Brady have that knee injury. For guys that live and breathe the game like that, it's a very difficult thing. He's been around us in the meetings and at practice. I think that's good in a lot of ways for him. He can help Hull. Little tips can help Mike Hull in this game."

Doesn't sound like a coach that has plans on leaving.

  • On recruiting being affected by Maryland and Rutgers to B10:

"Recruiting's about fit. I have tremendous respect for Kyle Flood and Randy Edsall. It's going to be very competitive, but that's what college football's all about. You have to talk about your own program and where you see the player fitting in to that program."

    On Wisconsin:

"I see a physical, tough, football team, a team that I personally really admire. They're not an East-West team, they're a North-South team. They do a nice job with their play-action. It'll be a big challenge for our defense. When I look at their defense, they're stout, physical. Are we going to be able to run the football? We have to be able to do that. We can't just go in there and throw it 60 times. I'm encouraged because these guys ... we had a really good practice yesterday. This is a cool week. I've heard it's going to snow. Wouldn't that be great? This is football, to me."

  • On the community, town:

"I live in a great neighborhood (Boalsburg). I enjoy the neighbors, enjoy the people I work with. I said, what a great place to go to college. I would have had a lot of fun in college here. And what a great place to play football. I love the students. When they started chanting Mauti's name last week, that was pretty powerful. I like a couple restaurants too but I'll get in trouble if I name them."

On getting Bench more reps in practice and where he's at:

"Over the last 3-4 weeks, we've tried to get him a lot more reps. He's done OK. It's not easy to come in as a freshman and learn this offense. Matt had playing experience and is a little older. As an 18-year-old guy it's a different deal. But when Matt graduates, as we sit here right now, Steven is the only quarterback in the program. He's made progress, he's a coach's son, he loves football, he's smart. I think he's got a chance to be a good quarterback here."

How much is he at home to "love" his neighbors? He's been there less than a year. I've lived in my house for 3 years, I enjoy my neighbors, that's about it. They are good people, but really love? He's not going anywhere.
