  • I'm feeling like this was an average visit.

I'm not sure why, but I still get the feeling we're not his top school as of right now.
Hopefully I'm wrong, but we'll see. The game against 'Bama will be huge, obviously, I'm praying it will be competitive and a positive thing in Taylor's recruitment.

Bloom is what, an hour-hour and a half from PSU? That solves an issue for his parents if they fly up to see him play (i.e. finding a place to put their heads). FSU will be tough but we have inroads with him that they don't. We have also put a fair number of TEs into the NFL.

  • Have to think that if he grew up a Penn State fan, has family in the area, and the competition = Penn State Vs. FSU... I actually feel optimistic. The Blue & White Typhoon sucked and might have done some damage in the back of his mind though...

I'm not so optimistic. I'd say it would be a very nice coup if we got him. Not sure what Jimbo is doing down there, but as soon as Bowden left, their recruiting really hit the big time.

Dude, I'm telling you Jimbo is a young, active coach in recruiting. Hate to say it, but when Joe hangs it up, I'd imagine our recruiting to heat up as well with a young active HEAD coach (not just assistants who visit prospects).

PS I know this post may get down-voted, but this is simply my opinion. And I am by no means calling for JoePa's head. I have been a staunch supporter for well over 8 or so years- ever since people were calling for his job. I think he should be able to leave on his own terms unless we see back to back mediocre seasons like last year and it appears that the program is headed south...

Yes, I agree with you that our recruiting should pick up in a big way with a new head coach. But I wasn't just comparing FSU to PSU. FSU is out-recruiting nearly everyone, including other programs with HC's that are very active on the recruiting trail.

  • The one thing that stood out is the comments about integrity. To me that is the biggest hope that I have for landing him as other schools will push harder I think.

A lot of their recruits are coming from Florida though, and I feel as though him being new and fresh and winning last year has a lot to do with his instant success. And he is a very hard worker from what reports say. I know that other coaches are too (Stoops, both Kellys- Chip and Brian, Mushchamp, etc.) but it just seems to be the flavor of the week type thing... Imagine what a new QUALITY head coach would do for us (it can't just be any new guy, he has to be a beast like Mullen, Dungy, Fitzgerald or someone). Again, this is not a knock against Joe, but having a head coach actively participate in recruiting- in ADDITION to your assistant staff- can only make your recruiting that much more strong.

BUT Joe does add something special, in that there are still a lot of kids (mostly of Penn State fan parents) that want to play for Joe... Taylor this year, Mangiro last yr... Its a give/take thing I think... I think best case scenario for us is have Joe step away when he wants (or when he needs to- if we are taking a turn for the worse) and have him STAY AROUND the program a la Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin or Tom Osborne at Nebraska in an advisory capacity. He definitely could still be an asset as long as blood is pumping through his little ol' Italian veins. That way, you still have a CFB legend around your program, but also have the added advantage of a young, hot, fresh HEAD coach actively involved in recruiting. Imagine the possibilities guys. At any rate, the arrow of our program is pointing up. WE ARE!

Yeah, but recruiting needs to be a selfish thing for these kids. They need to go where they feel comfortable, where they want to be the most, where they can get the best education for their major, etc. I hope we get him though, bc PSU has a lot to offer educationally, and his family is already here! COME TO PENN STATE KENT! lol WE ARE

Bowden was an incredible recruiter too, but FSU took a hit in recruiting once they named Jimbo their coach-in-waiting.

The coach-in-waiting theory is terrible, it doesn't work. It just advertises the instability of the program.

If coach in waiting happens to take over in less than two years like Fisher, it allows recruits to know who the heck their coach would be. Right now, sorry, I think PSU's situation screams unstable to me because you know he is gone probably after this year. For Maryland, it was a bad idea; for Texas, it was a bad idea because Muschamp wasn't waiting and fled to Gainesville; for FSU it was a great idea.

I don't think it really affected FSU's recruiting. Fisher had a pretty darn good class last year and will do so this year as well.

I dont know how I feel about a coach in waiting... I never said anything about that, but I don't know how I feel about it right now. I think that for us, we shouldn't do it because Joe openly said he isn't a fan and it would just create tension with the team- we all know how Joe can get, he's a fighter. BUT I do feel that it is time to start making a list and checking it twice. And when Joe walks away- OR we simply choose not to renew his contract because we've had 2-3 years of mediocre success and its apparent that he isn't effective anymore- we need to make moves ASAP and establish a solid coaching staff. If they choose to wait, the program will suffer. Also, they need to make it a situation where Joe doesn't feel disrespected so that he can continue to be an asset to the program- as I have argued above.

If anyone wants to do the research ... how many places name a head-coach-in-waiting, and then don't hire him?

Texas had one, and he left. Maryland had one and he didn't get the job.

FSU obviously tied a lot of $$ to the ascension. And it has seemed to work.

Bottom line ... no sure thing.

Or the better question might be to start with how many places even try the head coach in waiting scheme? The open ended schemes where there is no date set for the head coach to leave haven't worked out well with FSU having the messy "retirement" for Bowden and UT and UMD not hiring theirs. So to me, it only seems workable when the HC is retiring in a year and they name a HCIW, like they did with Joe Tiller and Barry Alvarez, and I guess Bill Stewart is another now.

Anyway, it isn't used often and it will be used even less now that the NCAA has made a rule limiting the HCIW's recruiting to the same they have for HCs.
